"There might be one body but there's ten souls I'm going to be taking with me." A truly touching thing for Christa to say in the moment but woah, the meaning that now holds in retrospect... Can't help but find that chilling and very very sad ;(
Did anyone else notice she said she made 9 friends and then did the Masonic "shh" with her finger and then said it would be one body but 10 souls with her? 9 and 1+10= 11 to equal 9-11? Just curious.
Sad thing is that Barbara, her backup just in case Christa didn't show up to the launch, was IN the stands watching and filmed her reaction. She was in absolute shock and disgust when she watched it explode. Her and Christa became good friends during training and she got attached to the crew. She must of been so ruined by this. What makes it worse is NASA was told not to launch because the cold could cause the launch to malfunction and they launched anyways. Sad and shameful. And nobody was arrested either.

In 2007, NASA sent an elementary school teacher Barbara Morgan to give some lessons from space. In 2013, another Chinese astranout Wang Yaping gave physics lessons from space.
Ms McAuliffe was a teacher at Thomas Johnson Junior high in Lanham MD in the 70's...she was one of my teachers...About 30 of us had a schedule screw up and had her for a semester... I''m honored to have known her... My mom was a teachers aid for her as well...
Barbara Morgan - the luckiest person in the world. When NASA got the shuttle program back on its feet, she went up. Her position was called “Education Specialist,” rather than Teacher in Space, as the government did not want any echoes from the catastrophe.
Sad man it really is but as everyone im sure has heard life is temporary but legacy lives on forever in the heart of those who knew her best and what an amazing legacy she carried on
Communicating the space experience, sending someone into earth orbit who could tell us what it's like in our own terms, has long been a NASA goal. And in August 1984, the spaceflight participant program was given the green light by President Reagan President Reagan: “Today I am directing NASA to begin a search in all of our elementary and secondary schools and to choose as the first citizen passenger in the history of our space program, one of America's finest, a teacher.” Last June the semi-finalist in NASA's teacher in space project met the press for the first time in Washington DC. The 114 educators selected from over 11,000 applicants spend a week in the nation's capital, becoming familiar with the history of space travel and of course, taking notes in workshops dealing with various aspects of shuttle flights. The next major milestone came in early July when the 10 finalist were announced. These teachers have survived an extensive screening process but they have to demonstrate even more “right-stuff” during their two week stay at the Johnson space center in Houston Texas. After a series of tests to ensure that they were medically fit to fly aboard the shuttle, the 10 were given a ride on a KC135, a hollow out padded jet that stimulate weightlessness for a short period of time. Finally on July 19, Vice President Bush made the historic announcement. Barbara Morgan, an Elementary School from McCall, Idaho was selected as the backup candidate and Christa McAuliffe, a Concord New Hampshire high school social studies teacher will be the one to actually fly in space early next year. Mrs McAuliffe: “It's not often that a teacher is at a loss for words. I know my students wouldn't think so. I've made nine wonderful friends over the last two weeks. And when that shuttle goes, there might be one body, but there's going to be 10 souls that I'm taking with me.” Since their selection, Christa and Barbara have been training in Houston, there has been a lot to learn but they have shown that good teachers made excellent students During her shuttle flight, in addition to keeping the journal. Mrs McAuliffe will teach two live lessons from space, One called “the ultimate field trip” and the other “Where we have been? Where we're going? why?” which will be broadcast-ed via satellite to schools around the country. She will also do a number of other experiments which will be filmed for classroom use after the mission is completed. Her goal ? Mrs McAuliffe: “I would like to humanize the space age by giving a perspective from a non-astronauts because I think the students will look at that and say that he is an ordinary person. This ordinary person is contributing to history. If they can get that connection, then they are going to get excited about history , they are going to get excited about the future, they are going to get excited about space.” While Christa prepares for her flight, life goes on in Concord, New Hampshire where she has taught for the past five years. Understandability, things in the McAuliffe house has changed. for example, there is now a noticeable path from the freezer to the microwave. But husband Steven, an attorney, daughter Caroline and son Scott have taken on their added responsibility without reservation. Mr McAuliffe: “You know, you are talking about a human being free of the bounds of gravity, orbiting the earth, there aren't many human beings that have done. So, I think both of us feel that whatever the price in terms of readjustment or my taking on things that I should have been doing before anyways... whatever those prices are, those certainly pale in comparison with the opportunity.” Visit concord high and you immediately understand what a special teacher McAuliffe is. Former student Andy Bart. Andy Bart: “Even though Mrs McAuliffe is a great economic teacher, I think what I learn most of her is outside the classroom. she taught me that the little person counts in that everyone can make an effect on our society and on the world. She proved that by being the first private citizen in space and being the first teacher in space. And I think she is a tribute to her profession. We are all very proud of her.” Even amids the excitement of witnessing her first shuttle launch, she does not forget her students Mrs McAuliffe: “I mean the whole things is so gorgeous, you just want to bring it all back to the classroom for the kids.”
