Things are never so easy, for example my family: my grandfather was a soldier in the Wehrmacht, but not a nazi. His brother, my great-uncle, was in the Waffen-SS and a total Nazi. The two did not speak a word to each other for years after the war. It remains a difficult topic.

It wasn't that long ago that a 90 year old German woman was arrested for having worked in a concentration camp as a secretary. Ironically, I think that the generation that actually lived during this time and endured it were more forgiving because they knew and lived among the people involved. The further removed one is from the lives of the combatants, the more difficult it becomes to empathize and the easier it becomes to judge.

I interviewed him many times about his experience in the Third Reich and the war.

During the retreat across France August 1944 the Der Fuhrer Regiment came across members of a Navy torpedo school who had no transport or weapons and had simply been abandoned. So Der Fuhrer picked them up stamped their pay books Waffen SS and these men spent the rest of the war as members of Der Fuhrer Rgt.

Nearly 20 years back I spent over a year working in Germany. I became friendly with an Australian woman who was married to a German guy who was a member of the local police force. He had seven brothers and over time I enjoyed a few nights out in their company. I got to meet their father. An old guy then, perhaps early to mid eighties, but still very sprightly and as sharp as a tack. He served in the navy and told me many stories of his time at sea. He was a real character and saw the war years as an adventure, his main interests seem to have been women and drinking, a real cheeky young chap I imagined. He had no time for Hitler and he knew nothing about the slaughter of people in concentration camps. He knew about the propaganda of course but was of the belief these camps were work camps and nothing more. Whilst I am sure there was a percentage of the population that knew of the attrocities I believe that there were many that did not know, such as this old guy.

Unfortunately the western allies especially England (Hitler always wanted either a neutral England or England as his ally) fought against us and called us the "bad guys" and "imperialists" while at the same time having fought the most wars in human history which gave them their giant colonial empires. When Germany rightfully took back its fromer territories in Poland, Germany was still a small nation in comparison to England and France who controlled ONE THIRD OF THE WHOLE WORLD. ALso, England invented concentration camps in South Africa to genocide boer civilians.

Their whole invasion of the eastern europe was part of the lebensraum, nothing more than nazi wet dreams for their own benefit, not to "save europe from bolshevism", although they were also anti-communist most definitely. Just so you know, around 50% of the Waffen SS were people who werent from germany, mostly people of the german diaspora in eastern europe who numbered millions at the time, the reason they and hundreds of thousands of other Europeans joined almost always was that they were conscripted and had no part in running concentration camps but mostly were infantry, anit partisan and tank units at the front. Not a single death camp was located in germany, the death camps often were not run by these units either, especially in poland they relied on ukrainians and locals who were helping them

Perhaps many fighting men had heard of the Cencentration Camps & thought they were Labor Camps & not places of genocide , But I find it difficult to believe these same men when fighting at the Front were not aware of what the Einsatzgrupen were doing in the rear areas ,The Units would be on the heels of the fighting units & would go into the rear areas & kill thousands & thousands of People, Men,Women & Children without mercy . However on the other side of the coin (& two wrongs definately don't make a right) Stalin had millions killed either by starvation, Purges or in the Gulags but nobody seems to say much about that , I guess because he was on the side of the Allies & we won the War. Politics & Religion are histories two biggests excuses or excuses for committing some terrible crimes.

well you have to remember most in the waffen ss were soldiers first and foremost
they were all volounteers and volounteered to fight not to stand guard somewhere
they were all daredevils ´which also showed in their casualties being mroe than of the regular army
however as they ofcourse were still part of the ss the parts of the ss that had to do with the exterminations obviously sometimes used the combat units to help roundup and shoot people
first of all they could expect them to do it
secondly the army usually didnt have the time energy or forces to it as their job was to fight a war
i believe there were man waffen ss men that didnt know, as they more or less had the same day as a regular german soldier
however the ones that worked in more beurocractic duties surely must have known
by the way what im saying doesnt mean that the waffen ss men wouldnt have supported it, im sure many of them would have
it jsut means out of a security and secrecy perspective only those that needed to know knew

Over 385,000 men were conscripted or transferred from other branches of the armed services.\
