  • Old Delhi, Delhi, India | 2023: We begin this walk from the front of the Gadodia Market in the Khari Baoli neighborhood of Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. Old Delhi is the mughal city built on the orders of Shahjahan in the 1600s. Today this area is located within the bigger capital city of Delhi and is loosely called Old Delhi.
Gadodia Market is a prominent central place in Khari Baoli from where the spice trade in large parts of North India originates. Entering Gadodia market gives a very clear olfactory cue in this regard with the strong pungent smell of fresh spices filling the air you breathe. The coughing and sneezing sounds you may hear in the background of this video are hence not derived from an epidemic of cold or COVID but just out of that strong smell of spices that instantly irritates ones throat and airways.
With the melody of these coughs and sneezes in our background we explore the first floor of the Gododia market first of all. Here we see a host of visuals consisting of the hard working daily laborers, intricate mughal+european architecture, spice warehouses, and daily happenings and chores of raw Old Delhi life.
At the Gadodia Market we keep going up until we reach the rainy terrace on this gray weekend morning. From the terrace we enjoy stunning views of Shahjahanabad and relish a weekend morning getting busy and crowded. We get to see the adjacent mosque, Fatehpuri Masjid, up close.
We soon decide to get down back onto the busy lanes of Chadni Chowk, with the rains now much heavier than when we had started. We end the day's walk on the main road of Chandni Chowk, walking from Fatehpuri Masjid towards Red Fort. We have not yet explored Red Fort; maybe we will explore it on a future walk.

Thank you. I do sometimes aim for that calmness and peace in my walks. Glad that it somewhat comes across.

      Hi Vaibhav
Yes…these days it’s mostly open. Though Sunday has usually been the day when Old Delhi shops used to be shut in the past so do check if there is a specific shop you want to visit.
