    Did you ever wonder how to whiten yellowed clothes and linens?
    You can learn how to whiten yellowed clothes and linens to make them look like new again! If you have old linens that have yellowed over the years, I will show you how to whiten them to perfection. If you shy away from purchasing old linens at antique stores because you fear laundering them, you can rely on my method to restore them. The process that I use is a success, time and time again. Amazingly, the fabric remains in tact for perfect results!
    Do you have yellowed linens in your attic?
    Search out your worst case scenario for yellowed fabric. My project of the day is an old old dress that I wore at age six. It is not protected from the air and hangs in the back of my closet. I don’t know why I’ve saved this particular dress over the years, until now. I have a three year old cousin that I adore and want her to wear it. It would be nice to have side-by-side photos of us wearing the same dress, at the same age. I’m sure a lot of you have similar items of meaning that you wish to reinvigorate too.
    How do we accomplish this monumental task? A little patience and a great product is all it takes to a brighter future for your old linens. This process DOES NOT occur overnight! Give me a week and I’ll show you the incredible results of my latest experiment. This dress is as beautiful as they day my parents bought it for me at The Little Miss Muffet Shop. Better yet, I’ll have you hosting your first dinner party on your Grandmother’s linens again. Bring me your worst and I’ll make you a believer in this great technique. Oh, and it works for old stains on colors too!

    I used this method on a 50 year old baby dress and in 3 days all yellowing was gone!! I was nervous about damaging it because I wanted to give it to my granddaughter to bring her baby home from the hospital in the same dress her own mother had worn home. My thanks to Renee Romeo for the advice!

    You’re a genius! How did you learn this? I used your technique on multiple vintage tee shirts that I kept in my dresser for years. All covered with yellow spots and underarm deodorant stains. I followed your instructions and I was amazed at the results. Thank you so much. I now have my collectible tee shirts to wear again.

    I was standing next to a woman last night who bobbled her glass of red wine and spilled it all over me and down the arm of my white cotton shirt. I thought I’d have to throw the shirt away, but happily, after soaking in an Oxyclean bath overnight, the stains are gone! I will let it continue to soak for another day before I wash it. Omg thank u so much. Im going to try this!! Is so easy. A tiny bit time consuming but well worth it. I had to throw out a whole years worth of stored baby clothes bcz they all went discoloured and yellow. I was devastated cz many were vintage smocked baby items. I could get them clean for the life of me. They were in plastic bins under my bed. THIS time, I still stored them in plastic bins according to size but lined the bins with acidfree tissue paper with moth balls underneath and wrapped all my clean, ironed and folded baby clothes in the tissue paper and put silca packets and a dryer sheet wrapped in cloth to keep them smelling fresh. 97% came out perfect the next use when the next baby arrived. So if 3% has some stains I will use this trick. I pray it works!!! Wish me luck.

    My grammar raised me an she was old fashion. Like 1800s she washed all her kids clothes by hand until late 60s we got a elc. Washer with a side roller for rinse. She also had the washboard. I use to use it to wash my socks. I still like to wash by hands it gets very clean.

    My mother has a wedding dress that has yellowed severely while in storage since 1959. It’s SUPER yellow. Much more yellow than this dress of yours was. Will 7 days do the trick or do you think it will require more days? My main fear is damaging the fabric. I’ve read that oxiclean can break down and damage fabric. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jordan stoner, Do you have an idea what kind of fabric her dress is made out of? If it was made in 1959, there's a chance that it could be a polyester blend. The polyester would add strength to the fibers during the soaking process. I'd hate to give you the green light to try it though- especially if there are delicate appliques and/or lace attached. See what you can find out about the fabric(s) and I'll give you my best advice. A picture would help too! Thanks for asking, Renee

My cousin also has a quilt she would like to brighten for the same reasons. We will definitely try your method!! Unlike a lot of the videos I assumed the best results would come from soaking the item for several days not several hours. I was looking for a video where someone did this so I could see what products they used, water temp and whether they used the washing machine or not. I also didn't want to scrub the spots on the quilt and risk ruining any of the hand stitching. Your video answered all my questions and therefore saves me a lot of time and guess work! Hi Renee
    Thank you for the wonderful tips. I also have a question for you regarding clothes storage.
    I would like to buy in bulk my husband's favorite white t-shirts and store them for later use-maybe 5-10 years later.
    How do I store them? I've been reading online but some sites recommend airtight plastic container with mouth balls
    . Other recommend let air in and use silica gel. I'm confuse as what to do to. Thanks

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      nguyyen vo, Have you ever used 'space bags' or airtight travel bags? They are the type that you either vacuum or suck the air out of. They are available in giant sizes (may hold up to 3 dozen t-shirts each) and they will be your best choice. They shrink down to nothing when all the air is removed so it makes storage simple too. The entire package will flatten like a pancake. The valve on the bag is a one-way valve so it will not let new air into the bag after it's closed. Yes, you can use a giant plastic container and add silica packets but this method is so much easier to store long term. Please don't use moth balls. The odor permeates everything around your home and is harmful to humans and pets over time. Vacuum seal bags are the way to go. They will keep all your t-shirts bright white for many years. They're fun to seal up too! I hope this helps your search. All the best, Renee

    When my children were little, people used to ask me how I kept my girl’s clothes to clean and bright. I used to tell them that I was the Queen of Bleach. I would work from least abusive cleaners to most abusive. I would start with a wet blob of laundry soap. Scrub and let sit. Then I would go to non chlorine bleach-scrub and let sit. And last, I would go to chlorine bleach. I would only let that sit for five minutes. I kept doing chlorine bleach five minute routine until it was completely clean or I had ruined the garment and had to throw it away. My rational was that if I couldn’t get the garment clean, I didn’t want my children wearing it. A really great book to tell you how to remove specific types of stains is A Field Guide to Stains. Do you think this method would work on a white shirt that had turned yellow due to a bleach spill that wasn’t cleaned off fast enough? It’s also been through the dryer a couple of times so the yellow bleach stain is definitely set in

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      L WithCake, I think it's worth a try although my situation was "natural" yellowing over the years and the fabric is delicate. Have you tried soaking your garment in water and 1 cup of bleach? I might try that first if the fabric isn't too delicate. Perhaps for a few hours? It would be a less expensive and time consuming way to start if you think the fabric can handle it. Best of luck, Renee

      Hi Cody,
      Yes. Oxyclean will work for you. The colors may fade VERY slightly but the stains will disappear and the collar will be bright white. If you're still concerned, There is a product available in your laundry aisle that comes in a small box. It's called something like color or dye collector sheets. They look like dryer sheets. Just toss one in with the soaking shirts and it will address your concern completely. All the best, Renee

      Hi Jimmy, Great question! If you're unsure of the heat tolerance of your fabric, you could try warm water. If the fabric is useless anyway, it could be worth a try. You can always go to the hot water method afterward. All you've lost is a box of OxyClean and some time. I hope it works out for you! Ll the best, Renee

    I have a wedding sampler embroidered by my mother to commemorate her wedding. I found the exact kit online which lists the fabric as being Belgian linen. It appears to have some water stains in addition to being very yellowed. I was going to have it dry cleaned but don't have much hope that it will improve. Your method looks like it might work to whiten the linen, but I'm afraid that the hot water will shrink it and/or cause the bright colors in the cotton embroidery thread to bleed. It looks pretty bad as it is so I don't have much to lose. My mother passed away a year ago at the age of 93.

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eileen Misslin, This is such a common problem. I think it's a good idea to run it over to your dry cleaner and ask what they know they can do for you. If they're confident they can whiten it, it's the way to go. If not, I can assure you that the cotton embroidery colors won't bleed onto the white fabric - the colors may fade a little bit though (hardly noticeable, like my dress). I agree - what have you got to lose? I think this method will surprise you! All the best with preserving your Mom's memento - it will be a wonderful tribute to her! Renee

    I'm excited because my yellowed cardigan is whitening as I write. I do have a question. I can't tell in the video if you completely submerge the dress? I've been putting in enough water to cover my cardigan, but it kind of floats in the water with some of it sticking out above it and the Oxyclean is on the fabric that is wet, but not under water. It's only been 3 days and I'm noticing a difference. I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. Thanks!

      I have another question. In one of your comments you mentioned a 5 gallon bucket for linens which made me think that the fabric doesn’t have to be laid out flat like your dress. So, I added 2 more shirts to the one I started that I planned to do individually. My question is how much water should you use - just enough for the fabric to be wet or more? From the video, I can't tell how much longer you let the water run after you sprinkle the Oxiclean on the dress. Thank you again for sharing this technique!

    • @ReneeRomeo

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      luchoporto, I'm so sorry to hear about that. This has worked for hundreds of others with great results. Perhaps there was insect damage that you couldn't see or they could have been stored in a sunny location that would destroy the fibers before washing. It's always worth a shot if they're un-usable to begin with. I'm so happy you gave it a try anyway, Renee

    i have tried this method for my polyester white shirt for 7 days and it hasn't done much

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Champion Girl, I'm glad for your comment! 100% polyester will never stain so the problem that you're encountering is with the space between the fibers. Some agitation of the fabric during this process will set free anything you have stuck between the fibers. Think old wash board - you don't have to go crazy scrubbing, just rub the fabric together a little bit every time you change the water. Problem solved. Thanks for sharing your scenario, Renee

    this could be a safer way of removing an aged yellow stain on any cotton shirt.

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kito, I agree. I think that bleach (the go-to whitener) is just too harsh - especially on older and colored fabrics. Oxyclean doesn't harm the integrity of the fabric so you need not worry about damaging the threads. It's also safe for colors. Good luck with your fabrics, Renee

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lia, Great question! No, please don't soak your linens in bleach for a week. They will surely disintegrate. Oxyclean is the only way to go here to whiten and keep your linens in tact. It works the best! Thanks for asking, Renee

    Oxiclean can stain some fabrics yellow. Hydrogen Peroxide in product can do this.

    If the fabric is a synthetic, it will be much more difficult to whiten. Try QUILT SOAP instead of Oxyclean. The QUILT SOAP is used for vintage lace to bring it back to white. Warm water.
