  • Prado 150 Loud Squeal/Squeak Noise from underneath while driving at any speed. The noise on this Prado was occurring at low speeds in this instance, however does also occur at freeway speeds. The noise appears constant in pitch and amplitude and does not appear to change with driver input such as braking and turning. Vehicle needs to be driven for at least 30 minutes before noise can be heard. We have never been able to reproduce the noise while driving the vehicle on the hoist. We have successfully repaired 6 Prados by replacing the front output shaft companion flange and transfer case front oil seal. Noise appears to be generated by contact between the flange dust seal and transfer case oil seal metal ring. This repair was performed after confirming that there was no contact between the brake pad wear indicators and rotors and no foreign objects stuck between rotors and backing plate.

    Darek - Thankyou so much for your informative video and recommendation! It has taken 6 months of me advocating that my car has this issue after you shared this video with me from the Prado Facebook page, and this week Toyota have agreed to replace the transfer case seal, although will not be replacing the output shaft companion flange. My Prado was the first this dealer had received with the complaint 6 months ago, and since they said they've had 4 more.

    • @nunawadingtoyota8134
      @nunawadingtoyota8134  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Flange comes with a seal that cannot be replaced on it’s own and there is an oil seal on the transfer case. There is no fault with the seals

      if there was no fault with the seals they woudnt need replacing

    • @nunawadingtoyota8134
      @nunawadingtoyota8134  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @dylannoter4818 visually there appeared nothing wrong with the seals, this was a low mileage car and so were others we looked at. Once we remove the flange we replace the transfer case seal of course to prevent possible oil leaks. We replaced the flange as well to send back to manufacture to investigate the cause of the noise. The true cause of the noise is not understood. Seal design perhaps is a contributing factor. Not all vehicles exhibit this noise. My 2019 Prado does not exhibit this noise after travelling 90000km. We have heard of instances where the flange is removed, seals are cleaned and lubricated and the noise disappears.

      @@nunawadingtoyota8134 If the repair can be carried out under warranty (that is, if that applies to the particular affected vehicle), why is there a narrative at the end of the video regarding individual's possessing adequate technical skills to carry out the work? Obviously, not all affected vehicles will in fact still be under their new car warranty but I would suggest possibly also annotating or mentioning a few words in the video that if your vehicle is indeed under its new car warranty, to have the repairs done by a Toyota dealership rather than attempting to DIY. To me, this would be on the very front of people who are affected by the issue.
      One other thing, if Nunawading Toyota are aware of the issue and undertaking the appropriate repairs under warranty where applicable, why aren't all the other national Toyota dealerships similarly aware of the issue and adopting the same approach i.e. recognising and fixing the issue when customers first present the issue to them? I understand that dealerships are all individual franchises but surely Toyota would have a 'Service Bulletin' type system whereby known widespread issues are nationally communicated to all Toyota dealerships?
      Am I missing something here? 🤔

    • @nunawadingtoyota8134
      @nunawadingtoyota8134  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @rich9903 Thanks very much for your comment. I do not think we need to specify that vehicles covered under warranty should be presented to the dealer for assessment and rectification.
      Unfortunately there is no Toyota dealer bulletin on this noise and as such only dealers that have experienced the noise may be aware of how to fix it. We are sharing this information to assist owners who have difficulty in getting it diagnosed as it can be very difficult to isolate the noise.

      @@nunawadingtoyota8134 Hi Darek. Your video and explanation is exactly what a family member (of mine) was looking for since his 2021 Prado (45K kms) recently developed this exact issue which frankly left him bamboozled as to how and why it had started. I have forwarded the link to your video to him and he now plans to present to his local Toyota dealership for further action. Previously, he had only been met with blank stares by the dealership staff when he initially brought it to their attention ... so thank you SO much.
      Having read all the comments before writing and including my own comments here, I do believe that there is a level of uncertainty amongst Prado owners who are experiencing this issue despite their vehicles clearly still being within their 5yr warranty and hence, repairable by a Toyota dealership under warranty at no cost - but never mind.
      I am more concerned about the total absence of effective communication of this known issue by Toyota amongst the national dealership network. Again, you can see from the comments on this post that apart from Nunawading Toyota, other dealerships around the country are completely unaware of the issue and customers trying to get the issue properly fixed (under warranty) has been impossible. You can understand that there would be tens of thousands of affected customers who will unfortunately not see your video and so will continue to be frustrated by the problem. I might actually personally raise the issue (the problem itself and the apparent lack of acknowledgement and communication) with Toyota Australia in the New Year and see how that goes.
      My personal situation is that I currently own a 2022 Prado with currently only 10K kms; however, given that it seems that the issue develops around the 40-50K kms mark for most, if that's also me in the future, I want to be 100% confident that I can immediately take my vehicle to a dealership for repair without any fuss ... or blank stares from Toyota staff 🤘

My local Toyota in pakenham says the subassembly is a month wait from japan. Have the seals and nut coming on Wednesday. It definitely is this noise, so thank you guys already!

      Factory grease on the new flange seal should be enough. For the transfer case oil seal and the little oil seal on the inside of the flange coat the lip of the seal with Multi Purpose grease, that’s what the repair manual specifies.
