Thanks for showing how to remove tiles without damaging the plaster board. I think that scraper is the best tools to protect the plaster board. I watched someone doing it with a screw driver and left him with a big mess and expensive project. Good one mate.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I don't want to buy a tool that I won't be using anymore and I'm only removing one row. Thank you, this is very helpful ;)
I dont understand. An oscillating tool is like 20 bucks with the blades. It must have been $5 7 years ago and you get to reclaim tile. With tile prices 7 yrs in the future you could have made a killing harvesting tile whole and burying them in the woods for later.
Oh wow, brilliant - this gives a complete beginner like me the confidence to have a go myself rather paying someone else to do it. very helpful - I'm gob-smacked at some of the negative comments , some people really need to get a life !!!!
Thanks for this vid. It's given me the confidence to remove some tiles from our fire place. There's only about ten to take off but for a first timer it is a bit daunting. Glad I found your video :)
Going to start in my bathroom tomorrow. Really just hoping I don’t damage the wall and plaster, so I can re tile my whole bathroom in a few days lol. Wish me luck guys. And thanks fir the vid, helped a lot!
This video was a big help for the project ahead of me. I need to remove old tile that surrounds my tub about half way up the wall. I actually want to use a peel and stick foam tile to replace them. How do you prepare the wall after you remove the tile to do a retile?
don't know why people are complaining....the guy got the darn tiles off no matter what flippin tools he used...heck, I could use a hammer and bash the tiles...they will still get off! nice video!
Hello, Cool video. I just wish I had watched it before I tried removing my tile. I made a few nice holes in the wall by removing tile that was poorly glued. There was no grout, just the cement glue stuff. Is dry wall easy to patch up? Do I need to remove the plastered wall and reboard? Thank you!
thanks for this. I'm thinking about having my bathroom redone at some point and thought I might do the tile removal myself just so I can minimize the mess and the noise (it's a co-op apartment)
@jillhbaudhaan i am using a long handled paint/paper scraper which is also ideal for scraping the old tile adhesive of the walls. the older the tiles are are probably easier to get off than the newer ones i suspect.these tiles were probably on the walls for about 5/10 years at a guess.
Can I do this myself? And what is the scraper you’re using to get the putty off the bathroom wall? How long did it take you? Sorry for so many questions? I keep it’s probably cheaper for me to do it than hire someone. Thanks
it didnt take too long it was a heavy duty scrapper which you can get from your local hardware store. some people say it is not meant for that job but i found it helpful
I tried removing old blue tiles from my bathroom but they have so much mortar behind them they are taking large parts of the wall board with them, any suggestions?
thanks jocky102 but i am no fool, i was not paid by the hour as it is my bathroom in my home. fyi i took my time as i did this in between my normal job so why rush.and it was an easy job and i have not said otherwise.
I use this technique myself and the scraper is the best tool for getting behind the tiles. That said, if the tiles are installed properly with a decent amount of adhesive, it is a lot harder that this video demonstrates. Sad to say I do find doing this job quite therapeutic, I really must get a life.... :-)
+Is Az When we took off the kitchen backsplash ( a similar job) we used a hammer, several scrapers , a pry bar and even a crow bar . If you get too rough you will "pay " for it with extra clean up work .Some of these pieces are razor sharp and you have to do a thorough job cleaning up . We used a 2" putty knife, a 3" scraper, a 4" drywall scraper , basically any tool we had that we thought might work .
I have two questions for you....does the age of the tile matter (how long it's been on the bath walls)??? and what is the name of the tool you start using at 4:43??? Thanks in advance
Trust me tiles dont fall off like in this video, I am in middle of our bathroom removing tiles and every tile has been a battle and I've tried all the methods, It depends how well they where put on in the first place, You could see here he was removing one and another three were nearly falling off dosent happen in real life try it you will find out steady as you go its takes longer than some of these videos show it.
Great video. If I may share my thought about taking the glue off. There is a product called "Spyder Reciprocating Saw Scraper". It can be used with a reciprocating saw. It'll save a LOT of time and energy. The best price I found for the scraper was at Lowes. I have personally not tried it yet, but do plan to experiment with the scraper at my next home improvement job.
Helpful. Could have been very funny if he'd made a few comments, like when he seemed to proudly show an intact tile! The odd 'Voila!' would have just turned it from a diy video to something a bit more viral! Though it was funny hearing him heavy-breathing about 7 tiles in! But at least he doesn't stop every other tile to stand back and admire his handiwork which my partner always does and it drives me mad as it means every tiny job takes 10 times longer than it needs to! Seriously, helpful video for beginners, thanks.
I have removed tiles from walls and floors, I bet this is on a dry wall. If this was a brick wall it is much ,much more difficult to remove.I removed tiles from a corner bath, not one of those tiles came loose in less than twenty pieces. I was considering re tiling my bathroom but was concerned about actually damaging the wall due to the amount of force required to break away the tiles. Btw, I used a four pound hammer and a new broad bladed chisel edge.
it did last till the job was completed and had no hassle with it at all. of course i could of got someone in to do it for me which would of cost me a lot more.
helpful video, I went into a kinda relaxed trance, ye know like, enjoying watching you work, came out of it sharply when I realised that it's me that will have to do all the work! no obliging male to land it on, haha, and my tiles go all the way up to the ceiling and even around the window!! ah well, thanks for upload
Just did my mothers bathroom floor. This method would have never worked. Every piece of tile broke into a million pieces and made a huge mess. I had to use a variety of tools.
Some adhesive, especially the powdered one that is mixed with water, is way too tough. On plasterboard, it's better to remove plasterboard and tiles together.

nice and controlled, less chance of an accident. Nice job :) could have used the claw end of the hammer to leaver off the tiles also if u had wanted ;0
or you could have got the right tools and it would have been an even easier and faster job. he was just giving you an advice, nothing wrong with sharing tips.
what did you expect? theem to be laid on and external wall inside the house? that would still make it an internal wall... they are aboout 1200mm high so it aint a shower
Classic example of using the wrong tool - that's a plastic handle he's hitting there, won't last long and as you can see it has no leverage and the blade is far to flimsy Always use the right tool for the job saves a whole lot of hassle.

After I saw this I went ahead and removed the tile walls in my brothers bathroom, even though he wasn't planing on remodeling
😂
Lol
😂 😂
Thank you for not talking.

how did you go? :)
Simple and straight to the point. Great Vid, Thanks for putting it up!
This is oddly satisfying.
+Ryan Jennings That's what I was thinking. I just sat here watching it for no good reason...
Lmao...right? It's like some sort of zen or something.
Ryan Jennings haha I agree with you pa
🤣🤣🤙
Who knew? Tile removal ASMR!
Going to start in my bathroom tomorrow. Really just hoping I don’t damage the wall and plaster, so I can re tile my whole bathroom in a few days lol. Wish me luck guys. And thanks fir the vid, helped a lot!

Hello,

This is a great video, no stupid talking, just action
Be careful of older asbestos walls, that pink colour is of concern!
Really cool! Thank you. I'm buying a house that is very old and has this ugly pink and green bathroom wall tile. And this really helped!
Thanks for posting this - I feel confident now that I can remove my own and update my bathroom
Could you remove just one broken tile this way or will it damage surrounding tiles?
Hello, nice video. May I know if the wall is plasterboard type? If it's so, I'm impressed how cleanly the bolster removes the tiles!
I'd say this was a pure plastered wall no plasterboard in sight
This was so satisfying to watch and very helpful. Thank you!
thanks for this. I'm thinking about having my bathroom redone at some point and thought I might do the tile removal myself just so I can minimize the mess and the noise (it's a co-op apartment)

Great video. Can you also ask, do you know where can I find the tiles same as those in this video?
Jordanshark if you have a steamer it can help removing the old thinset
Would it be easier to tear down the wall and replace it?
That is a good scraper, long durable handle and long blade. I can't find one in stores here, like it.
Do you need to remove all the old mudding completely or is it okay if some of it stays on, for when you need to put new tiles on?
I’m completely mesmerized. Now I’m going to watch it again.
This is an "easy one" to remove. How about removing glass tile set in a shower with the strongest thin-set mortar on the market?!
After you remove the tile can you reuse the existing board? Or do I need to add a new backer board?
I want to remove my accent glass tiles from my shower surround. Could I just scrape them off like you did in the video and add new tile?
Thanks for the video! It gave me the courgae to try it myself. It's a lot of work, but you did it perfectly
Is possible to remove bathroom tile without damage?
Can I do this myself? And what is the scraper you’re using to get the putty off the bathroom wall? How long did it take you? Sorry for so many questions? I keep it’s probably cheaper for me to do it than hire someone. Thanks

I tried removing old blue tiles from my bathroom but they have so much mortar behind them they are taking large parts of the wall board with them, any suggestions?
how did it go with installing new tile over the old drywall?
But what if the tile is small and in the center of other tiles? Where do you start from then?
Is this how you would do it if it makes up the tub surround also?
Is that just sheetrock under the tile? It seems you can scrape pretty hard but doesn't take any of the wall.
thanks jocky102 but i am no fool, i was not paid by the hour as it is my bathroom in my home.
fyi i took my time as i did this in between my normal job so why rush.and it was an easy job and i have not said otherwise.
Nice Job- Alot of time needed for this
It's a bit too slow. I need to get them off quickly and on plasterboard without damaging it. What do you suggest?
Check out homedepot. They have a magic tool that gets all the tiles off at the same time with one motion.
marcandsebe Remove the drywall with the tiles. Use concrete backer board in the bathroom.
I do remove plasterboard and tiles.
I use this technique myself and the scraper is the best tool for getting behind the tiles. Kevin Saunders you can come to my house and get some therapy! My husband and I live in the Caribbean we can offer you a free room while you work! LOL!
Classic example of someone saying someone is doing something wrong without offering a better solution...what tool would you recommend, Nickji66?
Thanks for sharing! I need to get that tool!
If your happy that's all that matters - good that you had a go and did it yourself and that it came out well.
Really useful, thanks. Helpfiul seeing how its done.
Thanks v useful video. what is the name of the scraper tool you are removing the grout with at the end?
looks like one of these if you haven't found one already www.diy.com/hand-tools/mac-allister-4-tile-remover-scraper/261650_BQ.prd
+Craig MacDonald thanks

I painted my kitchen before I tiled it when I first moved in im hoping the adhesive come's off like yours 🤞🏻
No continuous chatter or music. Well done

Thank you so much for the video
Thank-you for sharing your video,i found it really helpful.Kind regards Stacey
Using a grinder, hammer and short gorilla bar works well also.
How the asbestos wall look like?, is pink the color? we just remove part of restroom shower wall , that scared me. .
someone did ask what sort of wall they were on .
great tutorial for a DIY project. Have a look at our tutorial on how to install Sandstone Veneer.
My BathRoom is for repair.
Please, tell me your help
any one.Thank you so
much.
What about damaging the membran?

@Janetofalltrades New backer board yes! it just will save time and frustration and why not for just a few dollars more

so what do you do if someone used cement to fix the tiles to the wall? I have been using a grinder and small percussion drill. Is there a better way?

man... what do you do if the grout is really thick and even with a chisel it's hard to come off?
+any4003 kango
A blunt wood chisel works good as well
Thanks for posting really helps
Very helpful. Thank you
A real hero right here.
nice tiles why remove ?
AMAZING VIDEO! 👌🏻
Problem I got removing the adhesive on the wall ,help easy way please, tiles are the bogey green shite been on there 50 years
is there asbestos in there?
depends how much your decorater charges you,
it did last till the job was completed and had no hassle with it at all.
of course i could of got someone in to do it for me which would of cost me a lot more.

@jordanshark thank you for the info
Thanks!!!!! great help!

awesome!! Thx for showing this us!
@mcdavidhome100 it was not as bad as it looks it took me about two days to remove them all and that was with a break of going to work for 8 hours!!!
Never use strong epoxy and glue tiles on a foam board. Nearly impossible to remove :(
Thank you for this 😀
surely he can find something better than a bendy wallpaper scraper to get behind the tiles? Like a proper chisel?
Too Funny!!
Surely you can find better things to do than troll a video thats showing people how to do something...
Yes there are other tools for this job but I used what was too hand at the time and it did the job perfectly fine.
Some adhesive, especially the powdered one that is mixed with water, is way too tough. On plasterboard, it's better to remove plasterboard and tiles together.

hahahaha
Such hard work!
An SDS with a cranked bolster bit is the way to do it
This method works only if the bonding is poor and if were a lick em and stick em job,not mortar back.
nice and controlled, less chance of an accident. Nice job :) could have used the claw end of the hammer to leaver off the tiles also if u had wanted ;0
Those are MY tiles !

great video, thanks
That's a lot of work. Where are my boys?
Why is this video 8 minutes long ?
+librazone did you want to see the extended version?
+jordanshark
hahaha nice one
Because he is using a paper scraper instead of a bolster :)
Probably a Lot easier to to with a sonic or a Fein tool
they were just stuck onto a a normal internal wall
At least he is reusing the backer board, most of them tell you to replace it.
Nice job
Top job!
Nowt like hard graft lad eh?
Classic example of using the wrong tool - that's a plastic handle he's hitting there, won't last long and as you can see it has no leverage and the blade is far to flimsy
Always use the right tool for the job saves a whole lot of hassle.
Thank you
Please use a hammer drill with tile chisel. Pays for itself on the first job.
