the guy on drums/percussion is Katrina's late husband. Mike Shapiro, who was also a producer/arranger/esteemed musician and played with icons like Lani Hall and many other Jazz artists. he also has a. extensive portfolio doing work for Hollywood movies. it's realky a tragedy that he passed away. they could've been a formidable duo.
I'm addicted to watching Katrina❤️ I have also watched her version of Beyonce Medley.I hope you do a reaction to it...her riffs and runs plus lung power is sooo amazing👍👍
This song is spain. Gary valenciano sang his version of this song too. Katrina is a beast. She can sing a phrase for over 30 seconds and can reached the 6th octave.
The late Al Jarreau asses the first vcals on Chic Corea's "Spain" where he showed up his scat prowess. Another Filipino, Gary Valenciano also showed his magical scatting on the song.
I heard she was really good and I can see why they say it I love her energy and I've always loved Spanish music of course I'm a big Angelina fan but it's great to see these other amazing young singers.
The drummer, Producer Mike Shapiro was Katrina's Late husband. He taught at The L.A. Academy of Music. He was the company's Vice President, Director of Education, and Dean of Students. He was worked & toured with Sergio Mendez, Al Mckay & Al Jarreau he has worked with a long list of International artists. In 1988 he met Sergio Mendes. This started a long musical friendship. They have toured and recorded many albums, including 1993's Grammy-winning "Brasileiro" and 2006's Latin Grammy-winning "Timeless." Unfortunately, they married in May 2021 & he passed away in November 2021.
Bill Schnee was their mix engineer here. He is excellent! You might have heard of him in your jazz world. His studio was in CA. Don’t know now. He was responsible for combining all of the different elements of the final version here. Kat did all of the background vocals and Bill balanced the distinct parts to achieve a desired vocal backgrounds. This just amaze me so much. You, and all worldwide musicians and music engineers, and Katrina (of course) are a tremendous facilitator of universal music! You help our weary souls. Bravo, y’all! 👍🏻💕🎶🤗🎼🎹🥁🎷🎻🎺
Love it! ❤️❤❤❤❤❤❤ *Thank you for reacting to katrina back in the day! Her short hair era was something else! Hope you get a chance to react to her live performances. Especially ones from her MetroWalk MusicHall cafe series! Her whitney houston medley, somewhere over the rainbow, and much much more!*
4.7 range, every register fully developed. Control for days. Diction on point. Not a run or riff she can’t handle….What’s not to love? Spain is a jazz selection…hence, “very jazzy” 😂 More Katrina, please….all her, no extra singers, toots.
This is one of my fave of her best. I'm enjoying this once again! Maybe you've been to Al Jarreau's Austin concert at One World Theater a few years ago, before his passing. Al sang Spain in that concert of his. It was incredible. Never miss his gigs, I was seated in the front row, & I went crazy. Haha! Btw, Al created the lyrics. Chic's was instrumental. I miss Alwin and his songs very much. Now Kat is making Spain in a samba/bossa nova rhythm. The "Oye" is in Cuban Spanish. Kat took Cecia Cruz's lyrics. She upped "All This Love" 3X faster than El Debarge's original. She took Stevie's "Don't You Worry" to another level. This medley was arranged by Kat & her late hubby, on percussions. Guess what? Kat did all the background vocals. Well, thanks a whole bunch, Aaron! Enjoyed your RV a lot! Have a great weekend! 👍🏻🎶🤗💕🇺🇸
Thank you so much for reading to Katrina. I would love to see you react to her cover of "Ikaw Ang Lang Mamahalin". It's from a few years ago, but, oh my, it is masterful! Emoting, breathy, highs and lows, dynamics galore, perfect placement belting....absolutely incredible. Just a note...it is a bit noisy because it's kind of a dinner club vibe, but wow, it's worth the listen! Here is the link.... th-cam.com/video/UpCbeuDiRos/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GdBc3Eo4VwrAsSWG
Here’s the link for Katrina’s amazing live world broadcast of her original song ISANG HIMALA accompanied by renowned all-female orchestra from two Christmas ago. Kat was selected from the Philippines. th-cam.com/video/GcW8LxIUDJU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dPHOqqZwUWtsALlX You will see how incredible versatile and talented Katrina is
Oh Aron. Man Aron. Few things! It hits different when an actual musician reacts to an arrangement like this. Really does. Still in a bit of disbelief that you did not catch/remember Al Jarreau's version of Chic Correa Spain that she did. There's even a duet of Spain she does in her formative years with her mentor where she scats 🤯. All I'd like to add after this, is welcome. Your "conversation" is complete. Can we have an Amen up in here 🤣👏
Hey there, Brezzy, mon ami! 🤗 Good to see you here! I fancy you’ll show up when Kat is singin’. Are you ready for the summer jazz festival in SA this year? I think it’s starting, or about to start. “There is no script. It’s conversation”. -they say! Enjoy it, mon ami. Take care and have a great evening, Brez! Love and peace! 🤗💕🎶🎷🎺🎹
@@moniquemontague8645 Hi my Monique. The Cape Town Jazz festival? No that was in early May. Unfortunately could not make it this year. Was never going to make it with me moving at the time too. Of course you'll find me batting for our girl Katrina. Just glad Aron is now a believer 😉. Enjoy the rest of the week Monique 👏❤️
Lol never saw you as excited, but I'm with you, this one is just so incredibly good...The arrangement and production were done by the late Mike Shapiro, Katrina's husband at the time, he also plays the drums here, the medley was recorded not long before his sudden death, for me this is his legacy, I guess for Katrina it must be incredibly hard to watch if she does at all...). Now here's a bet: - I'll give you another medley, by a new artist to your channel, 3+(1 hidden) songs, but in that case all originals written by the vocal artist, and arranged by her. She just won 6 Brit Awards... and this performance is live at the awards, she already knew she had won 3 or 4, but not that she would break the record by taking home six awards from 7 nominations: Artist Of The Year, Best New Artist, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Songwriter and one more, I forgot what it was... The bet is: I will see you as blown away and excited as you were here, or even more... If you are, we both won... :D Here we go, if you will, cordially: RAYE - BRIT Awards 2024 Medley ('Ice Cream Man', 'Prada' & 'Escapism') th-cam.com/video/OiKbKRcsBCw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lH4ys1Qk9ol_AZh1 Peace and love from Bavaria!
This is a performance video not live, Katrina does all vocal tracks on this medley. You are correct the original Chick Corea version is an instrumental. Jazz vocalist Al Jarreau added lyrics for his 1980 version. "All this love" original by El DeBarge, although it is a little slower.
I figured you'd like this one! Al Jarreau added the lyrics to Spain. All This Love is an El DeBarge song. Her husband, Mike Shapiro (RIP) was on drums and likely assembled the band. Mike worked with a number of notable artists. She does her own background vocals usually.
Also, rereading her credits, it looks like the band in the video may have been a different band than the actual studo recording. Looks like the recording was done in LA and video filmed in PH. Might have been pandemic issues for travel.
From what I know, Spain with vocals in some parts done by Chic Corea live. But his official release was all instrumental jazz. Spain with full lyrics was done by Al Jarreau and covered by Gary Valenciano then by Katrina Velarde in this Medley Gary also a Filipinos. I don't know other artists covered this also. Hi, nice one.....can you please react to Katrina Vilarde and Jessica Villarubin's cover of Celine Dion's I Surrender. Thanks and more power to your channel.
Listening to the fantastic Filipina singers and their supporting musicians over the last five years or so has me questioning everything I always thought I knew about music.
