    Thank you so much ladies for your honest review! You are right, a viscose would always look beautiful for the Florence, many of our members have since made multiple blouses and have tried different bases. A lightweight lawn is recommended by Donna, I think the Lady mcElroy lawns do have more structure and we've since moved back other lawn suppliers. I wanted to ensure that our members learn to sew with various bases. Most of our Learn to Dressmake members have never sewn garments before so as you quite rightly said - learning shirring on a viscose would make for a difficult third project. By learning with lawn we have seen some wonderful blouses made, most importantly, successful garments that our members are enjoying wearing and feel proud that they've made another garment that can be added to their new me made wardrobes! What I want to avoid is setting our new members up to fail, which inevitably leads to putting away further boxes and not completing the course. It's amazing to see how well they have all developed through the different months! This blouse is the only garment in the subscription that uses a lawn, it seemed to be the best fit, I don't think we could run a 'Learn to Dressmake' subscription without including it as an option. You will enjoy month 4's project! xx

      Thank you for your explanation of why the fabric was chosen for the blouse. Ladies @NorthernSewlSisters, would it be an idea to pin the response from @Littlemisssewandsew?

      I think lawn is a fantastic base fabric for a new sewist to use as it's much easier to handle than viscose. I know when I first started sewing I was always advised to use a cotton or lawn first and work towards using viscose later once you have a little more experience. This is a wonderful subscription box for a beginner or anyone wanting to refresh their sewing skills. I think a new sewist would be so happy with all 3 of those beautiful blouses and all the other garments they get to make.

    I think tucked in it looks great. Love the print and the sleeves look fine. Obvs only you can tell how it feels. Agree on the neckline!

    Tamlyn asked for suggestions on how to save her blouse: convert it to short sleeve or cap sleeve length, then crop the length and take it in on the sides to make a less boxy casual top for summer. The muted colors of the top look great with your light wash jeans. If you need a swimsuit coverup for vacation or a top to put on over your exercise clothes in summer, a longer length and boxy shape would be good. That fabric might soften up with laundering over time.

    Hello ladies thank you so much for sharing your makes on your You Tube channel. I agree with all three of you. The choice in colour wise is on point but the fabric type would be amazing in viscose rayon very flowing light to the wind to give a elegant bounce on the sleeves.
    I do like this pattern for me. Well done ladies it is a beautiful pattern but not for everyone.🥰🥰🥰❤🧡🤎

    Awk, disappointed for you that you all don’t like it, but for us it’s good to see others having “misses” too. What I would take away from it is that you all learned a different shirring technique so that’s happy days!

    I think you are all right about the cotton lawn being the wrong structure for this pattern. To save it, i think you should take off the arms and turn it into a shell top, and perhaps turn the hem into a faux waist coat shape to give it a bit of interest and perhaps a faux button placket 😊 however you have all given a great insight to the pattern and peocess and i think it is very helpful 😊

    I think you all said what everyone was thinking, that, in a drapey fabric it would look completely different. It's obvious that the kit was geared to beginner sewists and lawn is a good choice. Thanks for your honest reviews.

    Rachel the blouse looks fantastic with the fabric you chose but I agree the fabric isn’t quite right for the style. Interesting to hear your views on your experience of making this pattern.

    Have to say the sizing thing is a real challenge, Im 14/16 in ready to wear depending on the brand but when I first started sewing my measurements seemed to put me in a 22 in the big 4 patterns and I was so confused I have so many huge garments that my husband calls tents 😂. I love that indie designers move away from this and I’ve learned to look for finished garment measurements now but I still find it confusing especially as I am a bit of a pear shape so need to learn to grade somehow! Interesting vlog and I actually think Rachel’s is lovely and I love that fabric.

    I agree with what you've all said regarding the blouse. The pattern should have had a choice of fabric to suit the pattern, especially as they are subscription boxes. If viscose was thought too difficult a fabric for learners then another pattern should have been chosen. If your a learner and made this you would be disappointed with the result and think it's your fault. It is something that Nicola needs to consider.

    I liked all your blouses. I thought that Ruans vee neck seemed lower. I agree that that it seems a little high on Rachel and Tamlyn. Size wise I liked the oversized look. It would be a shame not to wear it but I have blouses I’m not keen on in cotton lawn. However viscose can drive me mad with the creasing. Tamlyn could shorten the sleeves maybe. 😊

    I have made that pattern a couple of times in lovely drapey viscose. I love it. It looks so different in viscose. I always get compliments when I wear either of them. It is a wonderful pattern when made in viscose. 😊

    I quite like the pattern, no ruffles, no frills, lovely I agree with you all that the fabric is a little too stiff . Maybe it will soften when being washed a few times. The choice of fabric and size is completely up to you, but as. you want an honest opinion, i will say the following :
    i think Rachel‘s blouse is a little bit too small and the fabric although beautiful washes her out. Tamlin‘s blouse is too big and Ruan‘s is just right. The muted colours should be combined with dark blue, black or white and accessorized with bright jewellry. But. as.usual you did a great job.

  • @jeanettespracklen5777

    Rachel, I love your fabric and I think it is lovely. However, you are right about the fabric choice. I have done this blouse as part of the course, and found the sleeves too long for me, as I often need to remove 2 inches, but I made mine a bit longer. I agree a more drapey fabric would be better.

  • @nataliestanchevski4628
    @nataliestanchevski4628 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Cotton lawn is really nice for summer tops so maybe cropping the length and cutting the sleeves short would make it more wearable. Adding shirring to the shortened hem and sleeves would make it into a peasant type blouse. I think a new sewist would be over the moon with the result even with the crispness of the fabric; my first makes were barely recognisable as clothing lol.

    I actually love the pattern! I do agree that while the fabrics are all beautiful, it's definitely the wrong type of fabric. In my mind, I see it in a really fine white gauze fabric, I think it would flow so much better. I also wondered if you were to use a fine drapey fabric, could you a lightweight iron on interfacing, or a tear away stabilizer just where the shirring is. When I looked at Rachel's fabric, it almost looked like a landscape. That was actually my favourite fabric. Thanks so much for your honest options. That is so helpful.

  • @ClaireD247

  • @michellebeyer1096
    @michellebeyer1096 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Rachel, you're right - it would be fine for a more formal work blouse. Tamlyn, I agree with another comment about cropping it and shirring the waist to nip it in, then the fulness would be more balanced. Definitely a pattern for viscose though.

    Thanks for your comments, cotton lawn is a great fabric, just need to find the right pattern. You were all very honest and I’m sure a lot of people doing the course will enjoy the shirring technique. I must admit Rachel it looked like you were going to the office, not your usual style but the video sounds like it was superb. As you all say, great choice for the beginner and a great lesson in starting to understand what different fabrics can do

    Rachel. I definitely don't think the top looks frumpy. I think if you cut the sleeve to 3/4 and finished it with a bit of elastic or a cuff it would work better in that fabric. I think it would work well with blue jeans or navy cargoes.
    The neck didn't look too high on you but is higher on Tamlin. Agree with Tamlin on the print on her, but the colour really works for Ruan.
    It definitely would look better in a viscose.

    Rachel - love the colour on you and I do like the V and think it gives a lovely frame to your features. I'm not personally a big fan of any structured blouse as they feel too formal for me. As you knew from the word go, viscose would be better to drape and skim - the pattern has some lovely lines I might add a skirt in the same fabric shorten the sleeves [maybe cap length] and have a sundress. but that's a lot of change. Tamlyn - I thought your's looked great on you when you stood up but there is a lot of fabric in the arms which makes it very dramatic. I did have a blouse in cotton with huge sleeves in the 1970s and once I'd worn it a few times I really liked it but it was a statement. Your design has quite a folk feel. I'd hem it and wear it a few times - see how you feel in it. Ruann - your V looked deeper - maybe just the design placement drawing the eye down but it also looked longer on you. - I think it has quite a dressy feel to it - maybe that smart casual look. I hope you do get to wear it and enjoy as it's such a pretty make.

    Great review ladies. I think I have this pattern so your comments on choice of fabric is invaluable. Although its a beginners course what is the point of giving you cotton lawn if the end project makes you feel frumpy? I understand, as you have all stated that using cotton lawn to do shirring is a good idea but wondering whether using a viscose and starching it would be a better solution in order to have the drapey look? I've never done shirring and still consider myself a confident beginner and think the tip of starching drapey fabrics is a good tip so wondering whether that would work. Would be interested to hear your thoughts . Sad to hear none of you really like your makes especially since its a premium Lady McIlroy fabric but you all do look great albeit a formal look

    Thank you so much for your reviews, ladies. I learn a lot from you. I actually think it looks very flattering on you, Rachel. Your waist looks so teeny tiny in that blouse. I get what you say about the fabric, though. Tamlyn: the colours look lovely on you. You asked for recommendations, and I think it would look lovely as a more summery shirt. Maybe take in the side seam, chop off a bit of length and make it short sleeved with elastic, aka the Sagebrush?

    Rachel: it's about how you feel in the garment, I know, but I don't think it looks frumpy and I also like your frill on the cuff, even though I'm not a frilly person at all. It looks lovely with your jeans, too. I agree about the fabric choice, it would be lovely in a viscose and that's what I'd have chosen as well, but I guess the cotton lawn was chosen due to it being an easier sew for someone learning rather than the best choice for the design.
    Tamlyn: you are never going to wear that blouse as it is, sorry, just not your style. It's vastly oversized, which seems to be the case going by what Rachel said from the finished measurements. I think I'd have gone by the finished measurements, although it does seem fit you nicely across the shoulders and upper chest. I have no hips, so I don't need to worry about that, but if you do have hips, then it would be helpful to be given that finished measurement, but to expect someone to be able to fit with their third project seems rather unrealistic. Your cuff looks similar to Rachel's and is very pretty. You could take it in a bit before hemming to see if you like it better, give it a second chance :-) You have nothing to lose, really. The fit and fabric choice are setting learners up to fail, in my opinion, as they won't feel good in the finished garment.
    Ruan: I agree with everything you say. I like the blouse; if it was not so oversized and in a viscose, I might have been tempted. I like a V neck.

Tamlyn - definitely not the one for you sadly! Re what to do with it, I know you all do sewing socials, what about a swap table with people's wips/ufos that are never going to get done that someone else might like to take on being a different size etc! But great vlog, enjoyed watching it.

    hi girls , I like the pattern but agree that the fabric is too stiff. The fabric are both beautiful designs and colours though. Would shortening the sleeve make it more wearable? so it doesn't puff over as much or just make a plain sleeve without shirring? Seems a shame not to wear it.

    I must admit I didn't like this blouse. Rachel's was the best of the three for me, probably her judicious sizing down. Ruan summed it up when she said she felt as if the garment was wearing her. The drawings on the pattern envelope made it look like a nice neat fit. The reality was nothing like that. When you moved the fabric made a rustling noise. I've been plagued recently by my own poor fabric choices. Cotton lawn was definitely a mistake.
