The best sounding Supercar period in my opinion

he's not talking about the angle of the cylinder banks, but the angle of the crankshaft. The flat-plane crankshaft has crank pins at 180°, that's what he meant. That's why he's even comparing it to a "normal" (his words) V8, he never calls it a Boxer.

Such a shame they dont run these. The series has really gone backwards in recent years.

To me it's just seems very clear he's talking about the position of the banks against each other and not about the structure of the crank. I read this from his usage of the word "fire" and the hand movements he uses to illustrate the differences.
When people mention 90 degree V8 (or any other number) they usually mean the angle between cylinder banks.
It is possible he understands the function, but I can't pick up it from the way he explains.

He used to be a driver and a mechanic etc, he knows exactly the difference, and yes he says a V8 is generally an 60 to 90 degree for the pistons, and in terms of the flat plane piston engine, Mercedes wouldn't have called it an boxer engine. Because Subaru will have trademarked the name Boxer for their engines, and boxer only comes from the last name of designer of the flat plane engine.

Man.. It makes me sad, they didn't run for long. They seemed so excited to have a European car in the mix, especially from Mercedes. Volvo too. It mixed up the grid a bit. Also the nissan.
Now it's just holden and... Yeah.. What a bore. They need to change something to make it attractive for Mercedes or even bmw to join the mix. They're too focused on formula e, endurance racing and f1. Also sbk for bmw. Much more watched championships than supercars

ehhm, he doesn't. He just explaines how a 180° degree V8 works, as opposed to a "normal" 90° V8.

lol @ the presenter thinking it's a boxer engine.

No he clearly doesn't know what flat plane crankshaft means. Has nothing to do with the angle of the cylinder banks.
This is not a 180 degree V8 and if it would, it would be called a boxer engine.

You've got no idea what you are even on about. This is a man who has been around this stuff longer than most of us have been alive

@@mattcecil6692 My theory is (like I wrote down 8 bloody years ago) that he understands it but doesn't explain it well. Maybe he's rushing it dumbing down for the average viewer. It just seems like he has confused the meaning of flat plane crankshaft and the angle of cylinder banks. Then again I admit I might have jumped the gun a little there being so harsh about this dude.
Flat plane crankshaft is the reason for the sound, V8 engines (not flat 8) engines that have flat plane crankshaft tend to sound like this because the resulting rhythm of exhaust pulses when they hit the collector is even, unlike the traditional crossplane crankshaft V8 where pulses reach the exhaust collector in uneven rhythm. If you slow down the exhaust note it's basically a drum beat.

Also you can actually make a crossplane V8 (classic murican type) sound like this if you fabricate a very elaborate exhaust manifold that can even out the timing of the pulses. You just need a lot of room for all the piping required
