Renovating A Traditional Japanese Kitchen With The Help Of A Time Traveler

- How to make your own countertops. This is a topic I searched a few years ago. The journey of making my own countertops has been long and I have learned a lot. Akiya homes are notorious for having terrible kitchens. Also, my ideas for this renovation were unconventional. I could't just look up ''How to build your own countertops in an akiya house in Japan'' and get what I wanted.
Can a future version of myself teach me anything about building my own countertops?
In this episode I will:
Build a concrete box
Make a concrete countertop
Install a countertop induction stove
Build a countertop frame
Build simple shelves
Get a visiter from the future
I will also have a giveaway of a FREE Dovoh laser. Please check out the comments section below to see the details!
Akiya renovation can be fun and rewarding but it's never simple. Countertops are extremely expensive in Japan. Why not try to create your own countertops? It's easier than you think!
I went a little crazy on the storyline in this episode. I've been obsessed with creating small cinematic movies to go along with my videos. Cinematic movies has really captured me. Maybe I should start a new channel doing that and just stick to DIY on this channel lol

Big respect for all your effort, I am glad I found your channel, please keep up! I am living in Japan and you are one of those few who inspired me about having an akiya for myself one day :)
Glad I could inspire you! It's an interesting and fun experience indeed!
Love this kind of Cyberpunk DIY....
I love cyberpunk stuff... I should do more lol
When will we see the Revenge of Solid Lizard? Also, get a tripod with individual adjustable height legs, it makes using the laser level on rough terrain easier. I credit it with how well I was able to make the flooring on my side. Replacing it all and having it come out within 2 mm on all corners across the entire building was very satisfying.
Solid Lizard takes revenge on me every day lol I will have to get a tripod when I do the hallway for sure. It's hard to adjust with what I have now for sure.
". . . assuming the floor was perfectly level." Ayuh, well there's ya problem ;) Old Japanese houses, nothing is square, nothing is flat, no two windows are the same dimensions. Hell, the left side of a window will be a different length to the right. Everything needs to be measured and cut individually. Looking good!
I'm learning that the hard way lol My brain is always... go go go and fix it later lol But I am learning to ignore that mindset so I don't create more work for myself.
Hats off to you sir, very impressive job you have done
Thank you! Cheers!
Very entertaining and mega ingenious product placement!!! Keep up the great work!!!
Thanks! Will do! Product placement? shhh lol 🙊
Hi Danny, super entertaining video !! You have always a good idea to ellaborate a surprising story !! 😊
Thanks! It was fun doing but a lot of work lol
Love the special effects!
Thanks man!
I like your videos! I would love to watch a whole house tour
I'll try to do a year review soon and make a tour. I have so many other videos in the works though. Maybe soonish lol
This is the kind of video that Chris Broad says he wants to make. Very creative! My wife says your wife is very beautiful. We'd like to see you do an outdoor barbecue patio.
I am over 18 years old and live in the contiguous 48 states of the US.
Barbecue patio would be awesome lol I'll be sure to put you in the running!
Hilarious AI & Gecko from the future! I'm looking forward to a laser filled DIY training montage from your distant grandson hah
I'm relying on lasers too much for comic relief lol
Good afternoon, I recently saw your videos on youtube, watched them and you reminded me of a long time dream of mine. I wanted so much to move to Japan, but due to different circumstances I had to forget my dream. And now that things are back to normal, I watched your videos and you reminded me again of my once forgotten dream. I want to sincerely thank you for your videos, the hard work you put into this, thank you so much! If you get a chance, please reply back. Also can I ask you a couple of questions later about your life in Japan and immigration?
Thanks for watching and the support! Glad I could stir old feelings up again. I am not sure how much I can help with immigration questions but I'd be happy to share my experience.
Rounding the edges of the counter is called BULL NOSING.
Good to know! I never know the terminology lol 😂 I just call it as I see it… round edges lol
Love the Blade Runner feels 😆
Yeah, forever my fav movie.
dude it looks sick🔥🔥🔥it turned out so goooood
Appreciate it! It's getting there for sure!
素敵です😊空家を有効活用していただき日本人として嬉しいです♡
あと50年は楽しめると思います。😆
Great work on the progress, and the video! thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
just caught up with you videos, very entertaining and fun to watch, keep up the work!
Glad you like them!
I love your channel 👍🏻
Thanks always for the praise!
beautiful Yakisugi!
I love it too much lol
The acting and narration gets better and better every time! Appreciate the video, as always, bud. Keep killin it!
Oh yeah, palm sander on the side of the setting concrete frame will get the bubbles out Ezpz.
Appreciate the support as always!
Yeah, everyone tells me this trick lol but I've tried it and it didn't seem to work well with the sander I have. I'm too cheap to buy an orbital sander just for this lol
Wow, Danny! The counter top looks great. And your video is so enjoyable, as always. It is lots of fun to watch the acting skills of all three of you. I loved the out takes at the end. Fun.
The other two good actors... me... terrible lol We couldn't stop laughing at the end lol
monster you killed a bug at 3.10
lol - Great video though
Nothing stands in my way lol 😂
Should fill all the bubbles in concrete it just a very thinset concrete to fill in all voids before resin unless of course you like the imperfections which I am always cool about makes it an individual and unique.
I have a filler cement, super fine, but I agree with you, if it comes out too perfect than it loses it’s character. Then it doesn’t look hand made but just store bought. But it’s still smooth on top with was the most important part.
@@DIYJapan Sounds great, especially the smooth saw a contractor put the stone counters on upside down and the bottom was like an actual rock formation the most uneven non smooth surface I have ever seen in a kitchen. They replaced em I kinda wished they had just resin poured over it because it looked so cool but as a counter it was horrible. Also appreciate the reply! Will be watching lots more of you.
The resin is expensive though. If you're just putting on a coat like I did, then not much is needed. But to fill over a large imperfect surface... could take hundreds of dollars worth of resin. ✌
If you make the center with a little more water and a finer grain cement you can get a smoother pour and finish. And knocking out the bubbles will be easier, too.
For more details look up the process for polished concrete (for floors).
So make it more soupy than oatmeal? lol WOuld just using portland cement just for the top be wise? The cement I used was portland with sand. The top was really smooth, but I guess my mix was too dry and the edges don't retain the moisture as much. Summer was brutal so they dried way too quick even considering I kept pouring water over them.
I have enjoyed all of your videos! Your daughter is a beautiful reflection of your wife and you. At the end of episode 4, there is a singer singing an enka like song. Would you happen to know the name of the song and the singer?
Thanks for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed! The singer is Saya Asakura (AsakuraSaya.com). I think you can find her on youtube as well.
Thank you! Looking forward to your videos!@@DIYJapan
how u doing?!yo udid superb traveler~ ))
Doing well! Thanks!
I want to buy a small house for me and live there. Since I am no a builder I know I will have big problems. I won’t know where to find someone who can help me. Any suggestions?
Best to talk to a local real estate agent in the area you’re looking into. They can help you find people who can help. You can have tradesmen do work for you, just be sure to get multiple quotes and negotiate the prices they quote. You can also pay an inspection of the house to see what you’re dealing with. Good luck!
