It's a very, very special occasion when Robert Plant agrees to sing 'Stairway To Heaven'. You can count the times on one hand after Zep disbanded. Jimmy has played it with other people but he never lets anyone else sing it.

Yes, technically this isn't Led Zeppelin 'Official' but it still is. This was a very emotional performance to me for many reasons but mainly because we see aging gods showing the world how it's done for the very last time and also because we get to see Bonzo's son Jason take the torch for the final lap of the relay race. I would have loved to know what was going through each member's mind as they were walking off the stage. I read that after the performance Jason went directly to his dressing room and cried and that Plant walked out the front of the arena alone, hopped in a taxi then went to a pub to have a beer and wind down. Page and JPJ apparently hung around for the after party. No doubt they all left their hearts and souls on that stage that magnificent evening. The world will never see another combination as gifted as Led Zeppelin.

As old as they are here they still rock better than any young band! There were 20 million who applied for tickets...they had to hold a lottery...I'd say that was sold out!

Great night. Rock and Roll closed the show - Stairway was about 1/2 way thru the show. You should watch the entire gig....thrilling and amazing.

Sal - thanks so much for doing the numbers from this concert. This was not the last song. That was Kashmir followed by 2 Encores (Whole Lotta Love and Rock and Roll). If you check my comment for your reaction to Nobody's Fault But Mine the other day, I gave you the entire setlist from this concert with links to the songs. 😁Hope you'll check out more. The solo (which has been voted as the greatest guitar solo ever) this night by Jimmy was closer to the studio version - he said that he wanted to make close to the recording to show that he could - because this solo was often improvised in concert. The acoustic fingerpicking at the beginning and the solo are done on the bottom neck (6 string) and primarily the rhythm guitar part on the top 12 string neck. The MSG performance in The Song Remains the Same movie is considered one of the best -if not THE best solo for Stairway. The MSG performances in the movie may or may not be the actual performances. The footage and the audio in the movie was often a combination of several nights' MSG performances or from a simulated concert a year later to fix problems in the film. . .BUT the good news is Stairway from the original film is pretty much the performance from one night July 27, 1973 (at least through the guitar solo) FABULOUS!!!!!! th-cam.com/video/qgGpFDtm2pk/w-d-xo.html Over the years, Robert came to hate this song and he rarely performs it in his solo career. He began calling it "the wedding song." I think it became too commercialized for him.

12 strings (top) for thicker rhythms
Soloing on a 12 is light years harder than on a 6 and is limited (like an acoustic is listed)
Solo on the 6 and played the finger picked intro on the 6
When they played the rain song and TSRTS the 6 was in an alternate tuning which is why the entire TSRTS was played on the 12, and the soloing he did on the early 70s, how the west was won and the 90s gigs w plant/page live were some of his best. No quarter solos were played in modal keys and again the earlier live gigs were some of his best work.
His knowledge of theory and structure from being a session guitarist for all those years was the backbone. Between him and Jones they could write an encyclopedia on music theory (despite what else you might hear). He was sloppy at times - but he also had the burden (chosen burden... they were good and they knew it = pompous- and thus a second guitarist was never worthy) of playing lead and rhythm
Not many bands had one guitarist and were successful

With LZ the studio version is just the beginning of every song. They change (improvise) all of them, even different versions from show to show. They play from their emotions and feelings with each other and each individual. There was , is and never will been anyone better. They are unafraid to play any of their catalog. This is the strength of LZ. I have seen almost every band, even more than once. The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and The Grateful dead can change up, but not as LZ. BTW, it's crazy to say but one of the best ever Stairway To Heavens, was not even played by them. Check out the Kennedy Center awards to LZ and you will cry.

It sounds like you have already done a lot of your Zep homework. Love your reaction. I apologize if you've already done this but please react to Kashmir, same concert. It is perhaps better than the original live recording from 30 years prior.

They still sound good and 02 but they were really great in the 70s and 80s
