The black insert is to be able to remove lead that might have broken off and be stuck in there. I still own the large compass and I really like it. All these tools are really nice for pencil layouts. If you find the Riefler branded set you can get some pens and pen tips too. A nice set.
I'm wondering if the pen attachment is meant to fit the other way around, across the pivot leg of the drop bow (so the pen would be on the other side), so you'd be able to track smaller circles. It seems to have a gap in the plastic which might have enough room. Aren't there instructions in the paperwork?
The basic functions of a divider are similar to a compass - measuring and marking. However the divider can only mark by making small indentations or holes. Formulas and rulers could be used for dividing a circle into 10 equal parts for example, but using a divider (along with other steps) is more practical and more precise.
