    !!!Hyperventilating here first thing in the morning!!! One of my favorite artists too, and I never dreamed I'd wake to Sheela-Na-Gig. This lesson brought a big smile on many levels. Thank you! I hear calls for Dress which is good, maybe Victory is another great guitar-heavy choice.

    Sick!!! Adrian, how about looking at some Birthday Party songs? so many great noisy punk/blues/rockabilly licks by RSH that no one looked at on YT!

      And I agree not enough people talk about her fantastic guitar playing. This is actually one of her simpler songs to play-she gets way trickier. And that’s to say nothing of her time signatures-the majority of them are not in 4/4, at least in her rock era (91-04). No one ever mentions that, either, which is bizarre-it’s such a distinctive characteristic and really sets her music apart.

    PJ Harvey is great as is Anna Calvi and Annie Clark, there is a pattern here; we have lots of new female talent that was not there before ,which is cool. (have a listen to Julia Holter "Have you in my wilderness as well).

    I saw her play for about £3 at a point in her career she had really taken off. She had to cancel her gig when her guitar was stolen and came back a month or two later but honoured the original advertised prices :)
    It was a great gig. The week before Glastonbury 1992.
    According to a fan wiki the setlist for a show later that week was Rid Of Me / O Stella / Dress / Highway 61 Revisited / Dry / Hair / Joe / Victory / Me-Jane / Sheela-Na-Gig / Man-size / Rub 'Til It Bleeds / Water.
    Takes me right back :)

      One of my greatest regrets was when she played the Warfield in SF on her "To Bring You My Love" tour, I didn't get off my ass to travel 30 minutes to see her, and only later became a more fanatical fan. Next I lived in New Mexico, and scheduled a business trip back to San Fran for a week when I could see both PJ and Wire for the first time, but it fell through due to a malicious twit manager. Finally moved back to SF and saw her for the first time on the "Hope Six" tour (along with Wire several times). I wish I'd been there for the early days like you, but anyway her power still radiates.

    Hi there!
    Thank you very much for the tutorial(s)! :)
    I discover your channel !
    What kind of pedal do you use to get this sound ?
    ( I play on a Squier JazzMaster and a Blackstar tube)
    I like PJ Harvey sounds but I hesitate between Overdrive and Fuzz...
    Thanks again for all this!

    Do you happen to have a video up that goes into more detail on the palm muting and strumming technique used in this song?
    I know it's fairly basic, but I'm finding that while I can play decent funk rhythm, when I'm palm muting the restriction to my wrist movement makes it super difficult.

    • @slacktoryrecords4193
      @slacktoryrecords4193 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What do you think makes it difficult for you? You’re just using the outside edge of your palm lightly resting on the strings in front of the bridge, right? The trick to the rhythm here, and with a lot of Polly Harvey’s songs that use that kind of super-tight, quick, palm-muted strumming, is to hold the pick as close to the strings as you can so that you don’t have to move your wrist/hand as much as you would if you were holding the pick, say, even as little as a half-inch farther away from the strings. That is, if I’m not misunderstanding the specific difficulty you’re describing.

  • @slacktoryrecords4193
    @slacktoryrecords4193 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a bunch of PJ Harvey tutorials on my channel-I don’t walk you through every note like our wonderful host here, but I make it obvious what I’m playing and usually include a tab in the video descriptions. All of my videos are accurate to what Polly plays.

    • @bradfield2266

      Start with low gain on the amp or an Overdrive pedal (not so that it fuzzes out much at all), and have a distortion pedal hooked up too, but turned off - then hit the distortion pedal on the “put money in your idle hole” verse. Does that help?
