      Being a service plumber is just this daily I find myself cutting into ceilings and drywall to fix stuff or cutting out old cast iron and replacing it. Must be nice for some company’s to walk in and say hey nope we can’t do this call someone else lol.

      Cut the hole bigger to expose part of the floor joists cut small patch of drywall screw it on mud tape. Redo the popcorn ceiling done

When asbestos was banned in most construction, with an exemption for current stocks, and a grace period where new stock could still be acquired they utterly stockpiled it for popcorn ceilings at rock-bottom prices. Took them until the early 80s to use it up. Many don't realize it could be asbestos in a 70s or early 80s house.

      I think it was ceiling tiles that had the glitter
      stuff on them and fit a standard grid system

    As a drywall finisher and painter I always love how plumbers and electricians just smash the crap out of plaster and lath! They make oscillating saws to to make neat clean cuts! By smashing the plaster and lathe the patch quadrupled in size! Gotta love it, job security! Thanks Steve!

      They also make nice clean cuts through PVC pipes, and electrical wires.
      That hole would have gotten allot bigger if he inadvertently plunged into that 4” stack, or a hidden wire.

    Steve you need an oscillating saw. Goes through the sheetrock and the lathe and it can be controled much more easily than a sawzall.

      I use a Rotozip, but the bits dull very fast on just regular drywall. Plaster will chew it up real quick.

    I always let customers know right off the bat we don't put sheetrock back, sometimes they get offended, or upset and I just tell them, I am here to fix the plumbing issue and I have to access. but if you don't want me to, then it will keep leaking causing more problems that will cost you more money

      You should clean up the mess you made (not talking patching drywall), and you should install the drain the customer wants. Just leave that overflow open until he replaces it.

    One of the first things I was taught about installing tub drains is to clean and solder the thin brass with the fine threads into the shoe of the trip waste. If it's going to leak or break it's going to be those fine threads on the brass.

    Steve is right, you have to stick to your own trade. He couldn't be an effective plumber is he was trying to repair the plaster after finding and repairing a concealed issue. Now having said that, that is why I would loose my shirt doing repairs.

    I think he should make a frame in the ceiling and a plywood cover with 4 screws so he can remove it in case the tub needs maintenance in the future. Can glue a piece of 2nd ceiling material to it to match what is there.

    Term is tip-toe drain assembly. Designed for access from within ones foot. Usually the rubber seal will age, cause the bathtub to not hold water. Lift-turn Assemblys are much more consumer friendly, longivity is much better as well.

      @@dosgos Mine did till we ditched the old cast iron tub. That was a mistake. My plastic one just cracked after 17 years old. Should've told the remodel company re-use the tub :(

    TH-cam has a lot of videos on how to fix drywall. It's easy once you get the hang of it. Nice camera work and editing from Steve. Working way up on a ladder in a tight area is not easy by itself without filming.

    I have to say, the Gerber plumbing products are exceptional. I had to replace this same fixture on our bathtub, installed the entire kit and the quality is top of the line, brass. No leaks and no cheap parts to break. Too bad this guy had to open up his ceiling however, that's what you get for having a two story residence.
