I was very privileged to have met h in the late 60 s and even had a dinner with his wife and nursed his cello en route to a concert! I was a friend of the general manager of northern sinfonia and is was through that friendship I met Maurice and many other famous musicians I was young then and had not really any idea how lucky I was !! Such is youth !
A lovely souvenir of two great (and very different) artists. I studied with Gendron at the Conservatoire in Paris in 1970-71. Although I found his approach to teaching ("Do exactly what I do!") rather paralyzing at the time, his extremely personal and original technical solutions regarding fingerings and bowings subsequently helped to liberate me from the old-fashioned 19th-Century German-school approach of my previous cello teachers.
How interesting and thanks for sharing :-). One of my orchestra conductors was telling me about when he had a group lesson with him and when he played the Debussy Sonata for him. What he admired about him was (as you mentioned) his technical solutions, his commitment, and mastery of the cello on the whole. I just bought his book "The Art Of Playing The Cello" (I am looking to explore my technique more as I always had comparatively laid back teachers). A really good read and so thorough as well!

I still don't know how Rostropovich played piano so well, it's not the first time that i see him playing piano, and like a pro.
