    Good video! Despite being a Londoner, I always find it hard to play the game, not because I am unaware of venues, but because none of my friends play, I am not really looking for a load of new acquaintances, and because generally it feels like a lifestyle of evenings in pubs that doesnt really fit into my life. Some of these barriers are my own, but others reflect a poor fit for modern living.
    Popularity in the UK, despite sellout events, is still a fraction of what it used to be in the West, and while it seems the sport seems greedy or out to just make money, it seems to be as much pursuing survival in the territories where it is still popular. If that keeps the european sport alive then great, but I think its a short term plaster.
    I will keep playing where I can but it is a shame. Its similar with music. There was a time where most houses had a piano, but money, space, cost of upkeep, difficulty of learning, and alternative entertainment options has meant that it has become comparatively niche. I dont love the idea but I forsee a future with no snooker to watch and play, and similar no acoustic pianos being manufactured.

      I don't see the point of it even when you're close to the table unless you have an elevated view of the table. Definitely needs bigger venues and better tv coverage deals to generate more revenue. And a World Tour should move from country to country every year, or every 4 years, like with the Rugby World Cup... There are loads of fans outside of the UK, but this will give the sport more publicity and generate even more fans.

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      it doesn't even really need to move around... just do more tournaments? tennis ain't stuck with just the wimbledon... golf does a world tour around many courses, a little more like formula 1 style... chess is all over with some tournaments having very highly rated players while others lower... does snooker simply not have a recognised worldwide association?

    • @AD-kv9kj
      @AD-kv9kj หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, like tennis would be way more popular if they got rid of Wimbledon and moved it to Saudi Arabia or China for more ticket sales. Wimbedon's just old fashioned and all about nostalgia isn't it. And golf would be more popular if they cancelled The Masters at Augusta and instead sold the tournament to Saudi Arabia or China for more ticket sales. 🙄
      Why is everyone so gullible, instantly just parroting whatever millionaire executives say in their pursuit for vast personal wealth at the expense of the soul and dignity of a sport or whatever else they get ownership of...is it even called a sport now, maybe it's just a product.

    The closing of snooker clubs is a very overlooked issue, Most places have a raft of Pool tables and 1 Snooker table at best. I understand the upkeep is higher but it is a difficult situation to remedy. Mr Hearn Snr and Jnr act like they have the sports interest at heart whilst also wanting to sell it off for as much as possible. Perhaps if they invested some of their millions it would fix a number of issues. Great video as always

      This trend has been happening for a very long time. Again, all comes down to money. You can fit so many more pool tables than snooker tables = more revenue for the owner of the establishment if they can rent out more tables at a time with the space they have. It's a real shame.

      I'm Australian. In 2015 I visited Britain for 6 weeks, with my cue, and resolved to have a game of snooker in public rooms in every city I stayed in -- five in all. No problems. In 2018 I returned and tried to do the same thing, and was horrified and depressed to find that I couldn't get a game in most places, and even in London I had to travel right across the city to find a room.

    As a long time snooker player in the UK the point about club closures is spot on. In my local area the number of clubs has dropped from 7 to 2 over the last couple of decades and with those remaining 2 reducing the amount of snooker tables in favour of pool/darts/skittles. No doubt the rising costs of clubs/pubs is also hitting these places hard.

      I'm in Canada, and I started playing in the 90s, and we had 4 spots in my home town where you could play pool and snooker. Slowly they closed up and now all we have are pubs with little bar tables for 8-ball.
      There is one place that opened in the back of a gambling hall (slots) and they have 3 tables. But access is restricted of course.
      Snooker isn't as popular as it once was, which is unfortunate. I wish we could have some Canadians back on the tour. Hell, I would travel to an event in Canada if there was one...

    In relation to the lack of snooker clubs in the UK, this is clearly true, for example where I live in London in the 2000s there were 4 snooker clubs within 20 minutes walk of my house, now there is only 1 and that is really a pool club which also has a couple of snooker tables in it. But the reason for this is that the snooker clubs were simply not being used and couldn't afford to stay open, I knew the owners of two of my local clubs and they were both losing money running those clubs on a weekly basis for years before inevitably finally having to close them. The lack of clubs in the UK is not really the issue, it's the lack of people wanting to play snooker which makes opening/keeping open a snooker club almost impossible in most areas of the UK.

    I think the fact that clubs are closing down, we aren't seeing a new breed of players as we used to. In addition to that, the very few remaining clubs means clubs can be extortionate with their pricing models, less people have access in general, less people are able to play because the clubs get rammed so you're queuing for hours, you also have many freshies and non-serious people playing which is fine but they are too loud, rowdy and mistreat or damage the tables. Cubs can also get away with mediocre table conditions and drive up membership costs. So all these things make it difficult to play consistently for a genuine player trying to become an amateur.

    They can only arrange secondary tournaments outside of UK in hopes of spreading the sport around. But the main committed audience with sufficient money in their pockets still remains from UK. I mean how many countries are there who buy snooker tickets a full year in advance? Just look at the number of players from UK in top tournaments. They are like 90% of the total players. Good points, like most sports there needs to be an update to keep the players and spectators enthralled in the game. However, often the snooker governing bodies enjoy the money and the crooked players enjoy money too, rather than the professional snooker player that often has to work hard to make a living. Obviously the top players have it slightly easier, but they've had to fight their way up the ladder of success. Really thoughtful post, you do talk a lot of sense, thank you.

    Problem is having bigger crowds will almost be impossible to keep people quiet while players take shots. And it would echo more. Even at Crucible there are pauses for people talking, moving, phones etc.
    I do love the Snooker shoot-out events where crowds are encouraged to be vocal. But World Championship I think should be kept as a classic Snooker event. It should never leave Sheffield, but acceptable if move to another venue in Sheffield.

    I have a hard time seeing the World Championships still being hosted in Sheffield 5 years from now. All the arguments being used to keep it there are rooted in tradition. However, crowds don't matter than much. The draw from TV audiences is much more important. However, I do think it's increasingly likely that the top players in the coming years are going to be non-UK based.

Most are closing down as their members die off and no new younger people join as it’s seen as a bygone time or not as nice as going for a drink round town or whatever. And with it they’re taking the tables with them

      Costs to keep such businesses open are too high, and even before the 'pandemic', these clubs were on the way out. All by design of course, future lockdowns with tyrants in the making *cough* Starmer *cough* will ensure the last few remain closed forever. I do see kids interested, but venue limitations are keeping that down to a minimum.

    As a Chinese I’ll definitely be more than happy if the World championship can be held in China, just like the World Cup of football being held around the globe. Under the circumstances of declining of the whole British empire( I know it sounds harsh but very true), there won’t be no local money injection into the sport outside of those betting companies, which ironically these betting behaviors got Liang Wenbo and others being banned from match fixing……Plus, probably this time y’all will have to walk into us Chinese’s shoes by staying up late for watching the tournaments hahaha

If it wasn’t for Ding’s phenomenal performances, I guess no one even cares about this sport in China. And if you want to get this sport more and more globalized, you definitely need to let different places to hold the World championship and let more people know about this sport, and potentially duplicate the success of spreading snooker inside China. Or, if you mean snooker should only be a regional sport, then I can only respect your freedom of speech, because each to their own.

    The whole Crucible thing is just ridiculous. It's not about money, you simply cannot have the biggest tournament at a venue with a gigantic wall in the middle and where less than 1000 people fit. That said, it cannot be a huge place cause you have to be able to see the tables and all of that, no one said it's easy... You could have two tables with separate crowds to optimize space for viewing and then reshape it for the SF and F.
    In any case, the state of the building, as mentioned, is very questionable, it kind of looks like an abandoned soviet theater when it's empty...

    TH-cam has very good analytics, so you know exactly where the sport is drawing interest better than most.
    Age demographics tell a story. Women don't seem to be interested in snooker. As an older player, I think almost everything is fine the way it is. Pool halls here in Canada feature female players, loud music, and alcoholic beverages, none of which feature at all where I play snooker. So, do you kill the atmosphere to concentrate on the game. Loud venues don't help me.
    I thought the Power Snooker variation that unfortunately didn't catch on, and the Shootout may be part of the answer. So, I would suggest more specialty tournaments that can appeal to the darts crowd, but at the same time, not destroying the existing culture of the sport.

    Unless you've been to the crucible and another event you'll never quite understand how or what makes it such a great place to spectate. I went to York to watch the UK championship and the area is massive, it left lots of empty seats higher up and the worst part of it was people were moving all over the place during frames, going in, coming out it completely ruins the atmosphere. Seating higher up is a free for all, so when they open the doors you just go for the table you want and hope there is a seat.

    In my opinion, the biggest problem of professional snooker is the lack of regular cash flow for players. You can be in the top 100 players in the world, and still not have enough money from the game to support your family or even yourself. Take basketball for an example - if you're top 100, you're most likely to get picked up by an NBA team, which results in a lucrative contract. Of course, taking into account the revenue generated and the popularity of the NBA, the money is accordingly huge.
    But let's talk proportionally to snooker. I think, that the introduction of the contracts for players on tour and young prospects, would largely benefit the game. Especially, when we take the time investment required to stay on the tour. Everyone want's more exciting young players, but there's no support for that from WST. Providing, that snooker becomes a sport from which you can live from, there would be more prospects to come. Put yourself in that situation: would you prefer going to college, graduating and having a decent paying job secured; or would you rather risk it all and invest 3-8 hours daily for an uncertain result?
    If WST will not invest in regular cash flow for players to live and focus on the game, then there might not be enough cash flow for WST to stay alive.
    Also, 980 seats for the "most prestigious" tournament on the tour, sounds very, very bad. That's classic supply-demand mechanism: there is too high demand for current supply of seats? Increase the ticket price 2x or 3x, so people wouldn't even bother buying it, if it's not a O'Sullivan - Trump clash. Or maybe, increase the seat amount 2x, 3x, 4x, so more people could watch the game and there would not be a need to book the seats a full year in advance. I think the change of the venue / major renovation is very highly justified.
    I hope the game will grow. Greetings from Poland!
