  • I've ordered a Tesla Model Y! And we've finally had the chance to drive one on Australian roads. Australia gets two variants of the Tesla Model Y - the entry level (tested here) and the Model Y Performance (which we are yet to test). Is it any good? Paul Maric finds out!

    Hey everybody! Three updates! As mentioned in the video - I have some more detail. Charging is capped at 170kW DC for the base model Model Y. Power and torque is same as the entry-level Model 3 SR+, so 220kW of power and 420Nm of torque. The price of the car also went up after we filmed, it’s now $72,300 before on-road costs. Thanks for your patience!

    agree. sounds like the berlin model has slightly softer suspension, and possibly the austin model as well. hopefully it's something they keep working on because I agree, it should absolutely have a softer suspension. no need for performance level stiffness in the standard/long range models.

    My 2020 M3 (US) has voice recognition navigation. No need to type in destinations. Also, previous destinations are retained in memory for call up. Car location in the app is a bit sketchy. Formerly, I could monitor my wife while she drove home, with the car centered on the screen as the map scrolled. Something changed with an update and now the app bullseyes the car, but then the map is static and the car drives off the screen and must be “chased” to see it’s progress. Another shortcoming (common to all 3 & Y at least) is no backup, cross traffic warning. While the rear camera view is fairly broad, a head check is necessary. To be clear however, it does alert as objects are approached. And don’t get me started on tire noise and firm ride. On the plus side, my Dual Motor ran 12.2 @ 118mph through the 1/4 mile!

    Paul - are you going to add a fer accessories to yours. I think the electric frunk kit (aftermarket) would make the MY. I think its worth doing. Also I see there are a number of suspension (aftermarket) kits available but all seem like a fairly major install. I think as time goes on and these get more popular in AU/NZ we will see easier/better strut kits become available. Love your reviews and cant wait for a few more MY reviews on your new one.

    The rear door locks ( and front locks) are power from the 12 volt battery not the 400 volt drive battery so it's unlikely to be and an unlocking problem even if the main drive battery is exhausted. Most of the other issues mentioned have been fixed by over the air updates some time ago.

    I ordered the Model Y with 20" induction wheels and noticed the majority of TH-cam reviewers from AU and the UK mentioning the ride quality as a significant issue. Just like in this review.
    This week, I went for a test drive with the 19" standard and felt the ride quality was pretty good. I have a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to compare and contrast, and it's not too far off, granted I only spend 20 minutes in the car!

    Thanks for a great review, Paul - you continue to set the standard for thoroughness, honesty and accuracy, and all with healthy dollops of good humour and personality. Ive been hanging-out for a Y for a while, but had to buy something ICE (Outback). Poor ride would be a deal-breaker for me. I'm pretty sure that when Sandy Munro did his thorough tear-down of the Y he mentioned that the chassis seemed to have fittings for an adaptive suspension, which would come close to making the car an exceptional machine. Like you, I think a HUD ought to be mandatory, and the stop-watching-the road to check your speed and other things is a serious flaw. I also think the car is not attractive, but I've seen uglier (like the first BMW X6, for example), but the interior is so very practical. When I'm ready to replace my Outback, this is one of the first vehicles I'll be looking at.

    • @Ianmundo
      @Ianmundo ปีที่แล้ว

      I own a Shanghai Model Y Long Range, the ride is very crashy. I have ordered a Berlin-built Model Y Performance because surprisingly, even with 21” wheels it’s more comfortable than the Long Range.

      @@Ianmundo yes, i agree herei southern california i recently drove a MYLR and. MYP. The ride in the MYP was definitely smoother. Although i didn’t have any complaints with the MYLR ride either. Give me a stiffer suspension over a softer ride anyday. Personal preference i guess.

      This ridiculous story that you have to look away from the road to see the speedo is getting so old…. Any time you move your eyes you are effectively blind.
      Your mind just makes up the image in between.
      Looking down or slightly left and down is exactly the same.
      If you can’t learn to glance in a different place you can buy a phone mount that replaces the top cover of the steering column, and an app will function as second display.

    thank you for sharing your opinion with us. firm ride would put me off, hopefully the next update will be in suspensions made for EV's not designed from the knowledge gained of an ICE where if you have a full tank of fuel changes dynamics to when the tank is empty also the cargo space loaded or not. batteries are heavy and they sit low. i like soft luxury feel in a car personally . . .i don't race in Australia where the speed limit is tightly regulated.

    A very informative, (even for a new owner) and enjoyable review - thank you. The dash cam requires you to hoot when an incident occurs, a period before and after the event is recorded. Also, a solid state storage device to replace the existing stick located in the glove box. So right about the app Paul; brilliant.
    As for it's looks: for me, the MY is much better looking than the M3.(of course the S is the real beauty of range.) I recently received my Red/White LR with Gemini wheels which I run naked. I never tire of looking at the car from different angles. I agree that the car is not as beautiful as the sum of those lovely different angles; I see echoes of 60's and 80's Italian styling. Perhaps I have an over fertile imagination. What really matters is that I love the car to bits whether in or out and, of course, she is wonderful to drive....sometimes I have to pinch myself to prove I'm not dreaming.

    Forgot to add 'nice review'. Another issue i found really annoying is the need to take your eyes off the road to look left for speedo and other things. And yes, trying to change settings on the screen while driving is very dangerous - i can't recall the nbr of near misses i had during my 3 day drive. A traditional screen in front of the steering wheel would be essential for me. I'd have to look at the after market options. And while I'm at it, the voice cmd system sucks - not only is it not intuitive, you have to put on a slight American drawl for the computer to recognise your voice. It's these small issues that really detract from what is essentially a great car (but too expensive for what it is).

    There is an excellent rubber infill piece for the cup/bottle holders available. In the USA there is a vibrant aftermarket accessory market. Less so in the UK but not too bad. Based on my experience of living in lovely Australia, you will have access to the American market. And of course, Tesla make a number of great OEM accessories.

    I'd suggest checking the tyre pressure - one thing that caught out a lot of people in the uk was the initial model y's (including the press vehicles) came over from china with the tyre pressure at 50psi rather than the recommended 42

    • @Ianmundo

    • @Stern0n
      @Stern0n ปีที่แล้ว

      I can confirm this, mine came with over 3.7bars instead of the recommended 2.8bars. Big difference after letting some air out of the tyres, not sure why they overinflate it by this much though

      @@Stern0n I think that they over-inflate the tyres for shipping. The cars are ratchet-strapped to eye hooks on the deck of the ship, hence the over-inflation of the tyres…..however, for me, it is unforgivable that the TESLA PDI isn’t correcting this prior to handling over your car for delivery, but hey what can you expect for £60k….?

    • @Stern0n
      @Stern0n ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ianmcfadyen2609 Yes, you are fully right. Probably that is the reason and should be adjusted before handing the car over. I wonder if the journalists who review the car check this before testing (note that the car only shows you a warning when the tyres have less-than-required air in them but not if you over-inflate) and I see many reviews giving a bad press to the MY for stiff ride. I switched from a Lexus RX450 with AVS suspension, and frankly don't feel much difference - even as the Lexus is supposed to be one of the more comfortable SUVs out there.

    Tesla have advised they are no longer supplying the mobile charging so if I ordered my Y model before this announcement can I assume the charger comes with the car and secondly can the driver use their own mobile phone hotspot for car wifi instead of paying Tesla a monthly subscription? 😉
