I have one. It's fantastic. It was the last one in stock at St. Louis Music just before the pandemic. My dealer ordered it for me and installed a K&K pickup (@ my request). I continue to be amazed every time I play it. The body isn't very deep. The neck goes from a soft "V" at the headstock then transitions to a comfortable "D" up the neck. It's 1 3/4" at the nut-great for finger style (my bread and butter). It feels surprisingly light when I lift it from the case. I can play it for hours without feeling fatigued. Most of the hype happened when more were shipped after the pandemic settled down a bit. Then I was astonished every time saw or read a review of a FMY66HD. The news has always been excellent.
I have a 1990 Yairi DY-77 that I bought new and it has been the most trouble free instrument imaginable. I actually had to adjust the truss rod for the first time in 34 years this spring, but only because the frets are getting worn, (the first five were replaced 12 years ago), and I was getting a buzz on the B string. The action is still lower than my Taylor and it sounds fantastic. Yairi guitars are one of the best kept secrets in the guitar world. Glad you guys are carrying the Alvarez Yairi line...not too many dealers out there. I'm really wanting the dreadnaught version with the Adirondack top...great instrument.
@andrewhnorris1 can you tell me what the main difference is between the two in sound and tone? I’m leaning toward the parlor mostly for the 12 fret neck
@@jjallyn3151 Hi. I use the parlor for fingerstyle. It's very responsive, has lower string tension and has a very intimate feel. The FYM I use with a pick. The tone is more open and rich. I'd say the FYM has the better tone and resonance, but I probably play the parlor more as it's so comfortable to play. You can't go wrong with either. They are expensive but also amazing value.
@@neilgorham6786 Mine are not nitro as far as I can tell. It looks like normal lacquer to me. They haven't got loads of overtones, but a rich and focused sound with great resonance and warmth in the lows and as sparkle in the highs.
@@andrewhnorris1how does the fym66hd compare to similar guitars such as the Martin 00015sm or 00015m or street master variations. I’ve been lusting after this guitar but refuse to buy it until I play one… it sounds super good in video and on paper. Do you have any similar higher end om/000 guitars that you can compare it to?
My Alvarez AD66SHB guitar has a great sound with a solid African mahogany top with laminate African mahogany back and sides. The cool aspect is that all 3 layers of the laminate are African mahogany. It makes a difference. This guitar from Yairi is a different level altogether.
I've recently been given a PYM66HD and it is beautiful. Such a sweet, focused sound with a high-end clarity and note bloom that I haven't heard before. I've wondered about a FYM66HD.
It definitely sounds better than my Alvarez all mahogany 00. They bought the wood at a lower price and it has been paid for decades ago. Other than labor, it is all profit. This is worthy of consideration!
I own this guitar and two of the other old-growth Honduran hog series, the DYM60HD and the FYM60HD. Since I bought these my other high end acoustics have remained in their cases.
I bought that Guitar 2 years ago and was disappointed with the tone for the whole two years until I saw a TH-cam video talking about Retro strings on All-Mahogany Guitars; I went out and bought Martins Retro strings and was blown away by the sound. I switched back for about a day and realized my folly. The Retro strings give Mahogany their unique voice.
I have 2 all mahogany Mini GS (I'd say best value out there) and a Louden all fiddleback mahogany that I always string w Martin Retros. Those stings on a mahogany are the best.
Try the Martin MA540FX strings by Martin, Tommy’s choice for touring. Wonderful tone I feel you get from untreated strings and the flexible core makes 12’s comfortable. You won’t regret it🤙🏽
Purchased my FYM66HDE back in October, 2021. Great guitar!!! None of my other guitars compare to this. Very playable up and down the entire neck. I also have a Yairi DYMR70SB 12 fret dreadnought that I would not let go of. Currently GASing for a GYM74.
Yairi also makes this same model with a Sitka top. They also make this model with EIR back and sides.I think these guitars represent the best value in a boutique style guitar. They are superbly made. I have the FYM 70. It's a finger picker's dream.
I ordered one a few months ago and just received it. I was floored by its warmth, clarity, volume, and sustain. Evidently there are 24 luthiers at Yairi who hand build all their guitars. TH-cam has videos worth watching of these impressive craftsmen at work. This is a boutique handmade guitar that could easily cost hundreds, if not thousands more.
is yours the 2024 version with FST6 bracing?.. I've seen a lot of videos with the previous years FST2 bracing that also sound amazing. you mentioned good sustain---I saw the Alvarez guys speculating that the new bracing might result in a bit less sustain, so curious about that too...
I believe it’s an FST6 since I ordered it in February and got it in June, but honestly I can’t be certain since the change isn’t obvious. I haven’t compared it to the previous model, but its sustain is terrific. Mine is loud, especially for its size, and very responsive to even a light touch. You feel the vibrations against your body. I mostly play folk/singer songwriter stuff around the house and reach for the Yairi over two Taylors costing twice as much. The hard part is finding one to play - they’re not produced in high volume and have a relatively small dealer network. I ordered mine with a 30-day trial and haven’t looked back. Best wishes.
