I'm sorry, but doing something like this to a child without the mum or the child's consent for that matter is a show of disrespect. I cannot understand why any adult would feel the need to put strong chemicals in a child's hair and without the mothers consent.
Yes, my grandmother did the same to me without my mom's consent. I suffered so many scalp burns and hair loss, as my grandmother had no idea what she was doing. And it was a super strength relaxer at that! Ugh! 😩
I tried going natural when I was 15. Girlllll you would think I got my whole body tattooed the way my mom reacted. I wish I was exaggerating. She bullied me about my hair every single day. Until eventually she forced me to sit as she put a relaxer in my head. It was so traumatizing. I did go natural at 17 because I could no longer get a relaxer due to lupus flare. I have made 13 years natural this year. Now, my mom says she never did that SMH I guess because of my experience, if anyone, including my mom, relaxed my child's hair against my wishes, they're getting cut off. From what I've learned, Black women especially from previous generations, seem so obsessive and controlling about appearances. I wouldn't raise my child like that.
Good morning and thank you for sharing, I hope you are doing okay with Lupus. Yes, from this comment section I am hearing so many stories that resemble mine but I was not aware that this was actually a thing. It almost sounds like a right of passage.
My mother (1940s) and grandmother (1920s) opposed and disliked relaxers. I begged for one at 16. I went natural around 18. This was not a generational thing, it was mindset of different people.
My grandma crème my hair in Jamaica when I was 10yr old before I started high school.. I had just passed my common entrance exam.. my mom was at work.. my mom was so upset.. I didn’t get why she was so upset.. now as a mom.. I would be heated😂😂
@@vikingrolloishot1789 true.. But I have to say whenever I visit now most girls have braids, twist etc and permed hair is not the norm anymore.. it is nice to see..
When I was in daycare, a lady there tried to give me a relaxer at nap time without my mother's permission. Luckily, I scratched my scalp, and she had to wash it out before it took hold.
i think a close friend of my mom that was going to do the same thing to me when i was in middle school. My mom used to be relaxed so she knew what the relaxers can do. She was going to "surprise" my mom with my hair being relaxed. I never knew this until recently but she said this would help me fit in. When she found out that she had that idea, my mom cut her off. I didnt know that was the reason i stopped seeing this lady. Im glad it was never done but that was just a violation of her trust.
Goodness! My aunt permed my hair when I was 8🥴 without my Mom’s permission. Thank goodness for wisdom! Fully natural and grateful for it. I wouldn’t dare do anything of the sorts to any of my nieces.
My aunt relaxed my hair at about that age, without my mom’s knowledge. 30 years later I’m finally natural. I postponed because I was scared of the big chop. I hate having such short hair, but I’m looking forward to it getting long again.
So your mom, let you keep relaxing your hair for 30 years. I’m just curious how that happened. Especially since it initially happened without her permission.
Well, my secondary School doesn't allow us to plait so I was barbing all through till 2022. Just started learning how to take care of my natural hair and I started my journey 11 February, 2024. Today, my front hair is 10 inches while my back hair 9. All those around me, my step mom inclusive, kept on laughing at me that I'm only wasting my time cause it won't grow as long as urs or better than theirs😢.. at some point, I thought of giving up but this video has inspired me once again 😊. Thanks so much 🙏 Secondly, u made mention of having to cut off ur hair in 2017 abt 7 inches but ur hair grew so much to waist length in just 2 years . I truly admire your hair journey and wish one day to atleast reach waist length. Thanks so much for ur inspiration😊❤
Hello Mya that was bold of your aunt to do that without your mother’s permission. You do a wonderful job taking care of your beautiful healthy hair. I went natural in 2016 and my hair is healthier for it . Thanks for sharing your journey.🌹💜
Wetting your hair was key to the health and growth of your hair in your younger days. I learned this in the 1990s. By keeping my hair damp was when I was able to grow my hair for the first time.
Thanks for sharing your story. I remember when my hair was first relaxed. I was nine, and I got a beating for resisting my older sister's attempts to relax my hair. My mom couldn't take care of my hair- it was too thick and too long, I remember her saying. Anyhow, my sis had convinced our mother that relaxed hair was better and easier to manage. I lost all my hair within a year since no one taught me how to care for it, and frequent salon visits weren't a thing. I learnt what to do by high school, and my hair grew back, but by then, the pixie cut was in style. I had to have it. Wore a pixie cut for nearly a decade until one day, I had enough. I have been on a natural hair journey for a few years now. Still learning🙂
Good morning! Thank you for sharing this! High school was definitely money see monkey doo when it came to hair lol, can relate. I hope you and your sister's relationship was able to recover and congratulations for going on your natural hair journey.
I’ve recently been exploring the natural hair TH-cam community and I appreciate how y’all aren’t afraid to talk about the stereotypes and negative things that even people of our own race say about natural hair. I’ve been made to feel like my hair is something to be ashamed of. “I just need to get my hair done.” “My hair just needs to be put in a style.” And I’ve even went through a phase where my mom would put perms in my hair back to back to back. I’ve suffered heat damage and didn’t know how to care for my hair for the longest time. The point is that this video is what I needed. You said everything that I needed to hear and thank you for helping black women like me on this natural hair journey!
It’s so crazy that bc of anti-blackness your aunt felt righteous in relaxing your hair. She thought she had done something noble/helpful by having something “acceptable” done to your hair. The “good hair” mentality actually kept me from going natural in 2011 when I wanted to (I was in middle school). My mother told me I didn’t have “good hair” (type 3 hair) like my older sister, so I didn’t go natural until 2014 once I turned 16 and could take care of my own hair. In the beginning I experienced family asking “what are you going to do to your hair?” “You don’t have good hair like your sister” multiple times from different people but eventually the statements around my hair turned into “your hair is gorgeous” or “wow how did you do your hair?”. Right now I’ve been growing my hair back from a big chop I did a few years ago, I kept my hair short for about 2 years before growing it back and even with a short afro the comments are always positive regarding my hair. I’m so happy that bc of women who decided to go natural in the later 2000s the notion that black hair needs to be relaxed or straightened to be “done” is a thing of the past (for me at least).
Hello Morgan, thank you so much for sharing! Your situation is not uncommon and needs a discussion and video of its own. I hope you and your older sister's relationship was not tainted by this. I am so glad you are embracing your natural and going on your journey.
My mother sent me to the hairdresser for my first relaxer when I was about 7 years old. This was in the late 1960s. Back then hairdressers did not do touch ups. Each time I was sent for a relaxer they would relax my entire hair. They were just messing up my hair. Also when I was a child many people would say that I had good hair. I didn't think my hair was any different than any other person of color.
I loooove the bonding moments of doing hair between mother & daughter. 🎀 I can’t wait to have a daughter, as I have a son. Until then I will make sure to let him have those same bonding moments. I’m so sorry that happened to you, it’s a horrific thing to do to a young girl. My aunt often abused my hair with massive heat, as straight hair in her eyes was the “BEST” look from her perspective. I am proudly natural, and rocking it @ 24 years old. 🎉
Thank you so much for the experiences and encouragement without the judgement. I know you encourage the audience as a whole, but it nice to hear from people other than my parents amd stylists! My mom didn't believe in girls getting relaxers, so I didn't get relaxed growing up. She had lupus, so was in the hospital a lot throughout my childhood. Other than my parents, I was informed in no uncertain terms my hair texture was the obvious bottom of the hierarchy. I've had my edges shaved off, relaxer thrown in my hair, one boy even glued weave in my hair as a dare. Stylists have told me I don't have the hair for their chair and turn me away. I had to begin taking medications that cause my already breakage prone hair to be porous and extremely dry. I've now had people tell me I'm anti black and not a real natural or lazy natural because I keep my hair braided under wigs, when that is the only way I can retain any sort of moisture or length. I say that to say my hair journey has always been a struggle for me. But finding your channel and hearing your commentary has been delightful. Thank you!
I had this happen to two cousins of mine. My cousin on my dad’s hair was so long and lushes but afterward it never grew the same. She has now had locks for almost ten years now and her hair is long again. My cousin of my mom’s side grandmother got her relaxed and her hair has never been the same. It’s always family members that will be the first ones to tear you down but not build you up.
Had a family member put a relaxer in my hair without my mother's permission. My hair looked similar natural like yours as a young girl. I don't miss the relaxer and burnt scalp 😔😞😏 . The health issues that came later in life because of it 😫. (Isaiah 33:24; Rev 21:1-5) Your hairstyles took me "back down memory lane" as the song says. You remind me of Aaliyah with your relaxed hairstyles when in your teens and young adult years.🧐🤔😎😁 Natural hair may be a lot more work but it's healthier in the long run.
Good evening! I was called Aaliyah all the time back in high school lol. Natural takes longer , but I wouldn’t have it any other way ! So relaxing a child’s hair that does not belong to you is a thing?!?! 3 women in the community have stated this !
Mine was relaxed without my or my mothers consent when I was three or four. They left the relaxer too long and now my edges won’t grow. Have a lot of complex about my hair because of this til this day.
That aunt was WRONG WRONG WRONG! Thanks for sharing your story. I always love it when you chat with us. There is always so much wisdom and intelligence in your stories. Merry Christmas to you and your family. ♥
Thank you Mya for sharing your natural hair journey! I loved the pictures you shared to go along with your story. I can appreciate you being forthcoming about the setbacks and all that you have learned because of them. This is very inspiring and your hair has continued to flourish beautifully! We appreciate you and the work it takes as a content creator. ITA...There is nothing lazy about caring for natural hair. ☺
Good morning MJ and thank you. Sharing setbacks are important. My journey has not been perfect but beautiful natural hair is possible and women need to know that !
Thank you for telling us your experience.......this is so useful to the natural hair community..... You have already helped me a lot, but I appreciate your invaluable experience. Thank you
Thank you for your content, I’d found your channel just over a year ago and I keep coming back! Unfortunately, hair care for black women has become somewhat of a battleground and there can be some pretty ignorant comments on how to care for it and what’s an ’acceptable’ texture and length etc as you’d mentioned in your video. Your personality is so refreshing and you’ve built a community of women who want to flourish like yourself. So thank you for creating this space and making the content you make. As a mixed girl who grew up without any guidance on how to care for my hair and learned from TH-cam university, channels like yours show that there’s a path! 😊
Good morning and thank you so much for being a part of the community, I am so glad that I this channel has been able to help you. Good ole TH-cam University, that is where I started as well lol!
I remember the one time I got my niece skinny jeans when my brother specifically said she wasn’t allowed, and how upset her parents got with me. I can’t imagine doing something like a relaxer. That is wild! What a roller coaster of a hair journey. Your hair was always so beautiful.
You are right about being natural is hard work. I have always been natural but i became more serious about hair care in 2012 as well when the natural hair movement became a thing and i can tell that it's expensive (when it comes to repurchasing all of my hair products), time consuming and require a lot of dedication. I feel like relaxed hair is the lazy thing though😊
My aunt relaxed mine at 11. Cold water in a tin wash tub. No blow drying or roller set after. At 22 I said I wanted all relaxer gone...I ended up with a bob up to my ears, go figure lol. Btw, your hair is so beautiful 😊
Thank you for sharing your story! ❤ Growing up I had similar experiences of my mom doing my hair! I would sit in between her legs and sometimes fall asleep in her lap. Such wonderful memories! My hair was very thick and long! I remember my oldest sister who like a maternal figure due to her being much older, came to me when I was in middle school and told me that I should get a relaxer because it would be “easier to manage my hair.” At that point she would occasionally style my hair, so perhaps she meant easier for HER because I was not styling my hair then. Being naive, I agreed. My hair became so thin and brittle and just broke off. I got relaxers from 7th-8th grade. My sister kept refreshing my relaxer and the validation from students at school drove me to the kitchen chair to get it done. When I got to high school I had had enough! I wore my hair in a lot of protective styles, mainly crochet styles and box braids. I was so disheartening to manage my the two textures in my hair, but I made sure to document my whole journey! My junior year of high school I decided to chop off my relaxed ends! I began wearing my natural hair out in mini twists, twist/braid outs, finger coils, etc. Being natural was not popular then, but during that time I gained a newfound confidence! When I got to college I went back to styles such as braids, faux locs, and then wigs. I would only have my hair out, not even once a semester. Even though it was tucked away, it was not moisturized or managed properly. I would have growth and setbacks. Starting my junior year of college I began wearing it out more, thus having more of routine. I started to see growth! My senior year of college that I just finished last week (whoops whoop) I began to take my natural hair journey the most serious I ever did! I have been doing research, finding safe products, making my own products, no weave or heat (just the rev-air), and having a more consistent routine! I’m seeing more growth than ever before! Just recently I have noticed the front of my hair having a more stringy/looser curl pattern. The only “heat” that I use is the revair once a month so I am taking a break so hopefully prevent more damage. Your channel is so inspiring I love your hair videos!!!
Great video! I loved seeing the photos of your journey and your story helped me realize setbacks are normal. I've had a couple and recently had to cut 5 to 6 inches. This video was super encouraging. 🙌🏾
I also started since young with relaxing my hair, but i've stopped 10 years ago, because it ruined my hair. I had to do a big chop. Now i trim my hair every 3 months. I still do every week silk press on 180 grades. I have thick 3C/4A hair and extreme shrinkage, but my hair can get straight easily with low heat. Sometimes i just blowout my hair and braid them. I also use sometimes the latest Steampod. It's expensive and has great review, but i still don't trust it. I really wanna stop one day with using flat irons.
You mentioned you and your mom went to see the movie Wicked. I just saw it last night at home on Fandango. I think it's a very thought provoking film. I was surprised at the end it said To Be Continued.
Something occurred to me while talking to my cousin about natural hair and how in the local market *Nigeria, hair stylist will try to use rat tail comb to comb out a section of hair to plait. Some Combs are just STYLING COMBS. not all Combs are for all textures. I have a white mother *God bless her soul, and I am trying to recall how combing her Caucasian hair would have felt like. I don't ever remember her using a rat tail comb to comb her hair even though it's straight. Some people just never had hair care culture thought to them. Thank God for content like this. May it reach the right audience.❤
I don’t understand this year arrogance of being so bothered by somebody else’s child’s hair that you need to “fix it“ yourself. I hope your mom took a long time to forgive her.
Wow, we were hair twins as kids. Currently my crown is broken in several places and my ends need a trim after a year of inconsistency and neglect. I’m starting my chebe journey once the grease arrives and I’m hoping to get half your thickness back! I also had a relaxer for most of life and used curling irons but also thought it was too flat and would braid it to add texture. I went natural in 2011 and have struggled to find a signature style or products. Natural hair is a lot of work depending on texture, density, shrinkage, etc. Mine is very particular and I still don’t have a clear idea of what works. Plus I have many textures… But this year is gonna be the year of flourishing! The style you have now is what I’ve always wanted but it’s not thick or long enough to look good down yet. So I’m going to try a better regimen including chebe and see what happens. Hoping for 18-24” total, since I hit somewhere in there during lockdown! But also in perimenopause so we’ll see 😊
Aww. Thank you. Must say you look a little bit like me, but a lot like my niece. Lol. Yes, I understand about getting into genetics, but hearing your story and the fact that I have been hearing this wrong statement all the time I had to say something. Lol🤣 All the Best to you now. 🎉❤ Yes, I like your videos very much keep up the good work. 👍🏾💃🏽💕
Thanks for sharing your hair timeline I also respect your openness to be honest about the bias in textures that's not always easy. I would share my perm story but it involves too many layers and people. I'm still trying to find my way with my hair and scalp. And with my hair no one can really tell how long it is but me. So I'm focused on length retention and stopping it from shedding. But I'm happy we can share our journey together and keep trying to get the hang of loving and taking care of our natural hair 🤎 P.S My story isn't fun but goodness seeing how many Aunts did this in the comments is a horror story I'm going to write ✍🏾
I currently only have 2 people that I can go to braid my hair and that is enough. When someone tells me they can’t do hair, no longer do I sit and allow them to do it knowing they can’t. 14:17 my hair also broke from allowing that to happen to myself, I definitely relate 💯 Thank you for sharing!
Of course! Thank you for sharing. Today I would have gotten up immediately, back then I just didn't have the capacity. I am glad that you have 2 people to be able to help you with your hair
Hi. I am a 64 YO White man who grew up in a predominantly Black rural area (e.g., I was often the only White child on the school bus). My school friends in the 60s and 70s all had natural hair, and it was beautiful. I don't know how society went from natural hair acceptance and pride to where we are today. Who did this to Black ladies? Did other Black people decide that natural hair was 'less desirable?' Did White people cause this? I am not a fan of synthetic hair extensions (regardless of ethnicity). They are not biodegradable and have caused problems for wildlife, particularly birds. There was a newspaper article about 20 months ago about a Black female entrepreneur and inventor. It was fascinating. She was developing a new type of hair extensions (for Black ladies) that was biodegradable over time. I wish I could recall the specifics. Have you ever discussed the negative impacts of (essentially plastic) synthetic hair extensions?
Good morning! Thank you for this. No, I have never discussed the negative impacts of synthetic hair extension. I was not aware that there was an entrepreneur who was making biodegradable hair extensions, but I know there was a women recently who was making hypo allergenic extensions.
@KlassicallyKept The hypo-allergenic extensions is another step in the right direction. This 'hair shaming' of Black ladies is a terrible trend. I watched most of one of your videos about hair a few days ago, but when a lady stylist (Nigerian?) was scalding her client's head I had to stop the video. I think people should do what they want with their hair - a personal choice - but the bullying is off putting to me. I went gray in my 20s, so in my early 40s I had my stylist of 20+ years put me back to my original brown color. It was shocking to me, so I reverted to salt and pepper. But it was (and should have been) my choice. The same applies to everyone else - their hair, their choice.
Lord this is so so many of our stories! Me as well as my sister! Then then next generation my granddaughters auntie, may she rest in peace same story! She came to my job MY JOB to show me! Mind you her” stylist” was also her man maid aka her friend aka the towns low budget hooks sis up! (Side eyes) he had habits auntie was doing waves because she’s NEVER had hair! She and I went to school for years together. My babies had hair down to lower mid back at 5 and 6 one has(had)hair u hit with water nothing but beautiful looser curls the other thick thick full beautiful hair that was a bit more coily (beautiful). By 2nd grade they was in weaves and of course nobody was taking care of their hair. I’ve taken over lots of grumbling but they had no hair 3 months in they cried because they had shoulder length. I told them give me a year and I can add on 8-10 inches added on. I wish my hair sprouts like a youngster but I’m natural and I’ve got great healthy hair longer than I’ve ever had.
Lol! 😂 I hear your mom on dying your hair. Mind you she dyed and still dyes her hair. I was on a break after my first year of college and decided to put that deep burgundy color in my hair. I thunk it was semi permanent. You could only tell it was colored in the sun, but the kicker was I got an asymmetrical cut. My hair was long and as family will often do, my mother treated my hair like it was hers. She literally would look at me or talk to me for two weeks. She finally said well I guess you’re grown now and can do what you want to do. Just don’t expect me to like it or agree with it. To this day she’s only satisfied when my hair is long and natural and not colored in any way. 😅
Dang that’s crazy my Auntie on my dad side did the same thing to me & when my mom found out they fought my hair is finally coming all the way back & im 33
Oh my god, this is exactly what happened to me. I was 8 or 9, my mums friend relaxed my hair, and I've had nothing hut problems since then. What gives these people the audacity
My aunt did the same thing to me. It’s been 30 years and mother still has not forgiven my Aunt(who is ironically natural now) for relaxing my hair without anyone’s permission.
I was in first grade when I got my first relaxer. However, when I went natural I didn’t know what to do so I mistreated my hair. Although my skills are better I still want to improve. Plus I am a lot nicer to my hair now.
Hello! thank you for sharing this! First grade! So you were even younger! Once I embraced my hair as well, it started to thrive. I wish you much success on your journey !
I’ve had a similar experience with relaxing my hair but it was my mother who relaxed after my grandmother took very good care of it. It pains me to this day
My grandma did the same thing to me when my mom was away at work (she was a flight attendant). I was much younger than 7 as well. 3,4,5 something like that. I don’t even remember it.
That is unfortunate and you were so young. It seems in this community Aunties and Grandmothers are overstepping and some even sound planned. Your grandmother knew your mother traveled for work.
Good morning and thank you for sharing this. Wow your dad and grandmother. From this comment section it seems Aunts and Grandmothers are overstepping. I hope you were able to recover.
My dad randomly cut my hair with regular scissors because he thought he could “fix” it when nothing was wrong with it. I had washed it and hadn’t styled it yet and I was a kid. My mom was so mad because my hair was super long and thick and he didn’t know what he was doing. I had to get protective styles to grow it out and ultimately got relaxers. Now I’ve been natural for 6 years.
@ thank you! I transitioned similar to you for a few years and then one night I was sick of the mixed textures and cut my hair. Rocked a cute fro in college and now it’s bra strap length. Love your channel, it helps me know how to care for my hair
In this comment section is is very clear that Aunties and Grandmothers were overstepping. By your photo it looks like you have embraced your natural hair!
Hi girl. I know this isn’t really related but how do you get your twists to stay in your hair? I have medium density hair but my strands are finer and they always comes unraveled at the end and then every day I have to redo it and it’s frustrating. Please help!
That a determined, devious relative, that made that ugly move. 😢 But I’m glad, you got the knock of it eventually and doing great by yourself. I heard it said many times on various videos, that genetic has nothing to do with the hair we have, but I would beg to differ as the hair we have has everything to do with genetic. If you understand what I mean. Now I will say, that what we do or how we treat what we got, has everything to do with the outcome of our hair. The texture, the growth and eventually the outcome. If you understand what I mean. So taking ‘ special’ care of our hair is beneficial for a great outcome. I’m a Jamaican, (live in USA) with 15% European descent and 85% of African descent. There’s no way I’m going to have bone straight Chinese hair, naturally, cause it’s not in my dna to get that. But what I do with what I got makes a whole lot of difference. Thus, I have never seen my hair hip length until the past 15 years of my life. Because of specific care and attention, I have given it. Cut totally off twice. So current growth is 9 years. But I also realized that different things work for different people, even in the same family, as the dna is different for each person. Therefore, people shouldn’t blame genetics but the care and attention given to the hair.
Good morning, I understand. I have bowed out of the genetics conversation lol, apparently my opinion is controversial and wrong. Lastly greetings my fellow Jamaican sister !
Wow, I can't believe she would do that to your hair at a tend age without parental consent.Your hair is beautiful & thick hair. Do you use "permanent parts" when twisting your hair, what's your take on them?
Wow same thing happened to me at like 5/6 but it was my cousin and sadly she put 2 Relaxers in my hair the same day since the first one didnt take 🤦🏽♀️
@ well long story short I finally my last relaxer was in 2022 before than the last one was in 2018 I discovered my curls in like 2020 didn’t know about natural hair all I knew was that my hair was super coarse, puffy and dry stayed breaking off never grew past shoulders so this year I decided to learn when I went to cosmotology school I grew my hair and made progress I noticed a whole new texture than what I’ve dealt with all my life I straightened my hair 3 times this year with the proper techniques and this last time I ended up having heat damage in the front lol 😂🤣🤣 but it’s crazy cause the only thing that helped me recover was actually taking the time actually learning about how to properly care for hair & my cosmetology teacher ofc 🥂🫶🏽✨
Thank you for sharing your story. How often do you use the Rvair . Im interested in purchasing one. I’m considering in using it on my 14 year old daughter. Since starting her chebe journey I haven’t put heat on her hair ; it’s been three months . She has a lot of shrinkage and does not like how her hair looks. Her hair is waist length but with shrinkage it goes above her shoulders. Any suggestions greatly appreciated
Of course. I use the Rev-air on the cool setting. Please note: it will take longer to dry, there will still be a little texture in the hair, and the hair wont be as stretched as it would be with heat. I would say right now at once a month. I use the Rev-air and chebe grease when I need to create content and film for partnerships. The grease allows more versatility with styling my hair.
Good morning Stephanie, I hope you are well. Yes my hair was long in college. I was transitioning. By the time I was telling people I had already started.
Not trying to be rude, but if I’m doing my math correct, you’re way older than I expected. You literally look 20, though. Sorry for what your aunt did. Hope you reach your goals in every aspect in your life❤️
Was part of the service to take all your mini twists out? I think that's what she was complaining about. Not an excuse for her, but she needs to communicate that.
aunts and grandmas are like your mothers in my opinion. I wondered if your mother didn't do a bigchop for 6 months to a year because perm hair was easier for her to manage your hair. The fact that your mom kept perming your hair speaks volumes.
Did your Aunt have children of her own? Im just wondering if some sort of insanity took hold of her when you were in her care and she convinced herself she was getting her daughters hair done. The story is insane.
Question: why so many black women have such an obsession and fetish with hair. It should really be kept in proper perspective. Do we scrutinize what we put in our bodies vs. what we put on our hair? Understand cosmetology basically only teaches chemical treating and caucasian styling techniques-nothing from a natural hair perspective , only until recent.
The aunt was so jealous of your beautiful natural hair
She may have been. Shortly after she started wearing wigs.
Or she doesn’t like your mom
I'm sorry, but doing something like this to a child without the mum or the child's consent for that matter is a show of disrespect. I cannot understand why any adult would feel the need to put strong chemicals in a child's hair and without the mothers consent.
Very disrespectful.
I found out later she relaxed her own daughter’s hair and she has every bit of 2c hair.
Crazy.. she loves the creamy crack
Yes, my grandmother did the same to me without my mom's consent. I suffered so many scalp burns and hair loss, as my grandmother had no idea what she was doing. And it was a super strength relaxer at that! Ugh! 😩
Entitled and in need for a physical brawled Aka a beat down!! Ugh!!
@@KlassicallyKeptsounds a little self-hatish. Wishing self-love vibes her way
I tried going natural when I was 15.
@painteroffeels7466 Isn't it something when they act like an event never occurred? My mom does that too.
My mother (1940s) and grandmother (1920s) opposed and disliked relaxers. I begged for one at 16. I went natural around 18. This was not a generational thing, it was mindset of different people.
Oh my days!!!!
@@KlassicallyKept I'm doing well, my lupus has been in remission since 2018. Thank you 😊
My grandma crème my hair in Jamaica when I was 10yr old before I started high school.. I had just passed my common entrance exam.. my mom was at work.. my mom was so upset.. I didn’t get why she was so upset.. now as a mom.. I would be heated😂😂
As mom things look very different to you!
From this comment section Aunties and Grandmothers are clearly overstepping !
And we know Jamaicans are texturing.
@@vikingrolloishot1789 true.. But I have to say whenever I visit now most girls have braids, twist etc and permed hair is not the norm anymore.. it is nice to see..
I’m an Auntie and I love my nieces and nephews like they’re my own but they’re not so there are boundaries. They not your kids.
In this comment sections many Grandmothers and Aunties overstepped.
When I was in daycare, a lady there tried to give me a relaxer at nap time without my mother's permission. Luckily, I scratched my scalp, and she had to wash it out before it took hold.
wtf
WHAT??!!
Okay, this is an new level of disrespect.
@@KlassicallyKept💯and lawsuit worthy
That is so horrible! There is something wrong with that woman
i think a close friend of my mom that was going to do the same thing to me when i was in middle school.
Aunts will so often overstep. I see it all the time.
Wow.
I’ve heard two other similar stories like this ! It’s crazy. Usually the aunt or the evil grandmother
That is a subject that deserves its own separate topic because..whew! I could write a dissertation.
Thank you for sharing. I'm an aunt. And I would never perm any of my nieces hair.
Of course and thank you for realizing that this was not appropriate.
Goodness! My aunt permed my hair when I was 8🥴 without my Mom’s permission. Thank goodness for wisdom! Fully natural and grateful for it. I wouldn’t dare do anything of the sorts to any of my nieces.
So this is really a thing. You are the 3rd person in the community to have said this! I am glad we are both natural and loving it.
My aunt relaxed my hair at about that age, without my mom’s knowledge. 30 years later I’m finally natural. I postponed because I was scared of the big chop. I hate having such short hair, but I’m looking forward to it getting long again.
Wow. So this is a thing?!?!!. I am so glad you decided to go natural as well. One of the best decisions I have ever made.
It is definitely a thing, our they cut your hair because it's too much work 😢
So your mom, let you keep relaxing your hair for 30 years. I’m just curious how that happened. Especially since it initially happened without her permission.
@@Rosannasfriend there’s a reason it’s called creamy crack. Once you get it you either maintain it of cut all your hair off.
Thanks so much 🙏
Secondly, u made mention of having to cut off ur hair in 2017 abt 7 inches but ur hair grew so much to waist length in just 2 years .
Of course !
Very bold. To wait for my mother to go out of town, you planned this.
No thank you for you support and sharing !
Dang, the whole family is just beautiful❤❤. Also, it is very bold and just ugly of your aunt to relax your hair against your mom's wishes.
Thank you!
Thanks for always sharing and being so encouraging of black women and our natural hair journeys. You are so right our natural hair is beautiful ❤
Thank you and yes it is !
Good morning and thank you.
I am so glad that at 24 your are proudly rocking your natural hair!
(Isaiah 33:24; Rev 21:1-5)
Your hairstyles took me "back down memory lane" as the song says.
You remind me of Aaliyah with your relaxed hairstyles when in your teens and young adult years.🧐🤔😎😁
Natural hair may be a lot more work but it's healthier in the long run.
Good evening!
I was called Aaliyah all the time back in high school lol.

Thank you
Thank you so much. As long as my content inspires I am content !
Thank you!
It is a labor of love, but I would not have it any other way !
Exactly what happened when my aunty did the very same thing, I was 11 at the time and I was very furious when she did that!
She without my consent!
My aunt relaxed mine at 11. Cold water in a tin wash tub. No blow drying or roller set after. At 22 I said I wanted all relaxer gone...I ended up with a bob up to my ears, go figure lol. Btw, your hair is so beautiful 😊
Thank you and I wish you much success on your natural hair journey.
I love your hair it's beautiful.
Thank you
Thank you for sharing your story!
Thank you and absolutely!
Setbacks are normal!
Keep going !
Love your content!!!!! I’m two years in to my natural hair journey. I will be starting my chebe journey super excited!
thank you
Something occurred to me while talking to my cousin about natural hair and how in the local market *Nigeria, hair stylist will try to use rat tail comb to comb out a section of hair to plait.
Thank you so much!
When she picked the rattail comb, I should've gotten up.
Oh the trauma … 🥹… I dislike it when ppl say ‘good hair’ …🙄 or ask me if I’m mixed 😖 cringe
I do as well. All hair is good hair.
@@KlassicallyKeptI don’t even consider that a term in my vocabulary .- but ‘beautiful hair’ yes …
I don’t understand this year arrogance of being so bothered by somebody else’s child’s hair that you need to “fix it“ yourself. I hope your mom took a long time to forgive her.
She did and I recently found out that she was also relaxing her own daughter's hair that was every bit of 2c.
Thank you for sharing your story I really enjoyed it💜
Thank you for listening !
But also in perimenopause so we’ll see 😊
Same. My grandmother relaxed my hair when my mom left me with her for a vacation when I was 6.
Aww. Thank you. Must say you look a little bit like me, but a lot like my niece. Lol.
Yes, I understand about getting into genetics, but hearing your story and the fact that I have been hearing this wrong statement all the time I had to say something. Lol🤣
All the Best to you now. 🎉❤
Yes, I like your videos very much keep up the good work.

But I'm happy we can share our journey together and keep trying to get the hang of loving and taking care of our natural hair 🤎
P.S My story isn't fun but goodness seeing how many Aunts did this in the comments is a horror story I'm going to write ✍🏾
Good morning! You and I both, I had no idea Grandmothers and Aunties were actually doing this.
What a cutie you were and grew to be a gorgeous woman.
thank you
you're beautiful 🧡
thank you
Lord this is so so many of our stories!
Wishing you a lovely birthday, mine is 31 Dec.
Thank you, best birthday my son won the football championship.
Happy Birthday !

of course !
Wow!!!! 🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Yes. My mother was not happy.
Oh my god, this is exactly what happened to me. I was 8 or 9, my mums friend relaxed my hair, and I've had nothing hut problems since then. What gives these people the audacity
As a mother, this would have infuriated me!
My aunt did the same thing to me. It’s been 30 years and mother still has not forgiven my Aunt(who is ironically natural now) for relaxing my hair without anyone’s permission.
Wow, how ironic, my Aunt now has 4 granddaughters who are natural !
Yikes! My aunt would’ve ended up in jail if she had relaxed my hair at 7 years old without my mothers permission. 💔
This story 🥺🥺🥺😲😲😲😲😲😲😲❤❤❤❤❤
I was in first grade when I got my first relaxer. However, when I went natural I didn’t know what to do so I mistreated my hair. Although my skills are better I still want to improve. Plus I am a lot nicer to my hair now.
Hello! thank you for sharing this!
First grade! So you were even younger!
Once I embraced my hair as well, it started to thrive.

THERE IS NOTHING LAZY ABOUT BEING NATURAL!!! LISTEN! 😂😂😂😂 I'm not laughing 😂
LOL nothing at all!
This happened to me too!! They also cut my hair off! My mother was in tears and just flabbergasted! It was my dad and grandma's doing.?
Good morning and thank you for sharing this.
Wow your dad and grandmother.
From this comment section it seems Aunts and Grandmothers are overstepping.
I hope you were able to recover.
The absolute rage I would have felt at my sister.
I am so sorry that happened to you.
Congratulations on being natural for 6 years.
It is a shame that your father thought your hair needed to be fixed
@ thank you! I transitioned similar to you for a few years and then one night I was sick of the mixed textures and cut my hair. Rocked a cute fro in college and now it’s bra strap length. Love your channel, it helps me know how to care for my hair
Wow I was 8 when my aunt permed my hair and I was excited because of all the hoopla around just for me but my mom was not happy
In this comment section is is very clear that Aunties and Grandmothers were overstepping.
By your photo it looks like you have embraced your natural hair!
@@KlassicallyKeptyes I have I’m almost 11 years in no perm and 3 years no color🙌🏽
I've been there. My mom was so pissed when my godmother took me to get my hair permed in middle school.

It seems in this comment section Aunties and Grandmothers are over stepping !
Hi girl. I know this isn’t really related but how do you get your twists to stay in your hair? I have medium density hair but my strands are finer and they always comes unraveled at the end and then every day I have to redo it and it’s frustrating. Please help!
If my sister did that to my daughter, she wouldve caught these *FISTICUFFS*
That a determined, devious relative, that made that ugly move. 😢
But I’m glad, you got the knock of it eventually and doing great by yourself.
For 2024 I have been using permanent parts and I love them.
They make wash day easier
Wow same thing happened to me at like 5/6 but it was my cousin and sadly she put 2 Relaxers in my hair the same day since the first one didnt take 🤦🏽♀️
That is terrible.
I hope you were able to recover !
“The world’s smallest rat comb”. 😂
it was lol
What color are your walls ? ( the one behind you specifically if you do t mind me asking )
Not sure, this was the color when we moved in.
@@KlassicallyKept really ???! Wow it’s nice. Thank you so much for responding
I remember your hair being really long in college?
Good morning Stephanie, I hope you are well.
Yes my hair was long in college. I was transitioning.
By the time I was telling people I had already started.
Not trying to be rude, but if I’m doing my math correct, you’re way older than I expected. You literally look 20, though. Sorry for what your aunt did. Hope you reach your goals in every aspect in your life❤️
lol thank you. I turned 36 during the holiday.
She does, she has a daughter.
I just recently found out that she was relaxing her hair as well, and it was every bit of 2c.
No disrespect …. Anything is exotic to anyone in orangeburg sc ! 🙊🫢😂😂😂😂😂
Lol , this is funny and you may be right, but I was just appalled that she said it out loud.
@ I moved here from nyc …. How this black dude gone tell me I’m pretty for a dark skinned girl 😳😳😳😳😳 I’m ready to get the F ASAP ! 😂😂😂😂
