  • Tackling up for beginners - In this video I help answer a few questions I've been asked. Do I need a wire trace? What knot do I use? plus a few more. Sometimes the basic questions are the most important.

    I use a twice through the eye grinner knot , always moisten before tightening the knot down , this has been a reliable knot for me .

      That's the key bit pal, if it works stick with it.

    That wire trace is amazing! I need to get some Titanium trace in 30 or 50lb. Great video!

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Setthehook Fishing That trace is a 100lb but there are some 45-50lb titanium traces on the market. Lots of lure fisherman by the AFW or Knot2Kinky wire and make their own.

    • @SetthehookFishing
      @SetthehookFishing 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +River Piker awesome! how is the action of the lure affected by the Titanium? does it flex enough to maintain a smaller lures action? I use small lures for big pike when they are picky. Thanks again.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Setthehook Fishing It is a stiffer material than normal wire but it does have some flex. For the smaller lures you are probably better with the 50lb titanium

    Thank you for the quick response. That's great to know. As soon as goods received and setup I will let you know how my first outing goes. Thanks again for all the info and tips. You really do go the extra mile to keep us pike heads happy. You deserve all the acclaim you receive bud.
    Take care, regards Kyle

    Lots of confusion over leaders around for sure. I see Muskie leaders here made of fluorocarbon but there crimped not tied and 150 pound breaking strain almost like a rubbing leader for shark. I prefer the titanium it has less drag in the water especially for glider or jerk baits. Nice reel there I like the wide spool with the heavier braid.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Huntnfishnuts Yeah pal it gets confusing. Problem over here is some people just think 20&30lb flouro is enough when we both know that will get bitten through by a sharp toothed pike in no time.

    Hi Paul, another cracking video from you, never really targeted pike myself but I have really enjoyed watching your content, I have caught pike before but not by design. Never caught anything over 8lb, I wanted to know your thoughts on swapping treble hooks over to single hooks? Iv done the same with my smaller lures when fishing for perch, main reason is less chance of flying hooks as I'm not the most confident, also for ease of unhooking, im sure it has an effect on how many you hook. Would be interested to hear your opinion on this? Thanks

  • @nuklearpuppy
    @nuklearpuppy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have been enjoying watching most of your videos and am stuck on whether to buy 150 yards or 300 of power pro 80lb braid. I have bought a rovex nitrium II jerk rod rated between 100-150 casting weight for under £40 and got a used Komodo 273 reel on eBay for £75.
    I'm itching to get out there and try it out but don't want to pay more for braid that will sit on a spool unused. 👍

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +jinxy mctavish Hi Jinxy. Nice set up mate that will do you well, and bargain for the komodo too. You will be fine with 150 yards that's all I ever get. I have only ever bought 300 if I was doing 2 reels. Hope that helps matey. Let me kno0w how the fishing goes. don't forget the baitcaster tips on the other video to stop the tangles. Use that brake! Tight lines mate

    congrats on a great you tube channel Paul...u mentioned knot 2 kinky single strand. i am struggling a bit with knotting it...perfection loop knot ok but i wondered what u use as it doesn't recommend twisting wire on packet

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +rob cutter cheers Rob. Perfection loop is spot on. It doesn't always look the best when you tie it, but it's strong enough. Doesn't seem right sometimes when it's not nice and neat or tight up to the swivel/clip but that's fine. Yes I've thought it would be nice twisted but they say it's not right for this wire.

    • @robcutter8911
      @robcutter8911 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +River Piker thanks paul....yes its the appearance that was concerning me although under testing seems ok....thanks for your confirmation i will keep practising it...and try and get out if rivers ever stop pushing!

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was like that to start with, just never seemed right. Watched loads of videos though before and calmed my nerves lol
      Good luck if you get on the rivers mate, we might have a chance now if the rain stays away. But don't be too put off with a bit of flow, it's usually the poor colour that makes it hard, but a bit of clear water is ok. Plus a bit of flow pushes fish in to the slacks where you might find a few lumps.

    Could you use the palama knot with (forgot the name) unbraded line. As always, absolutely fantastic videos! Have you ever fished Lake Windermere in the lake district? My dad and I deadbait and use lures on it and lures work every time! Give it a try sometime!!!
    Thanks for another great video! Tight Lines!!!!!

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ledzep Lover Yes you can use it on mono lines too, though i've never used it then. I learnt the palomar when I switched to braid and never gone back to using mono so not had to tie it. Never fished Windy but I will do one day mate, it's on my list! cheers

    Nice. Ok so now I know why I'm losing so many lures. I use 20lb braid but wont be no more. 80lb on order. Thank you :-)

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Judge 400 Years nice one pal good to know that has helped. It's overkill as far as the fish goes but you will lose too many lures do to crack offs or snags with light braid.

    • @gunnerhoward3134
      @gunnerhoward3134 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +River Piker I hear that. Many thanks. I may even buy some nice lures once I get the 80lb braid on. My Mrs will be happy too, now she wont have to go in river to get back me lure back :-)

  • @BUSHCRAPPING
    @BUSHCRAPPING 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    What lb braid would you recommend for medium pike fishing? I do a lot of light and ultra light lure fishing for perch chub trout and the odd jack. I use 10-15lb braid with or without a fluoro leader or wire depending on what I'm doing and where. I'm looking to get into bigger lures this winter but not huge ones probably up to 70-75g I was thinking about 45lb-50lb? Probably start using titanium traces too because it will be just for pike. I just use light drennon wire at the minute cos I don't target jacks very often

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi mate, that all sounds spot on. Even with lures to about 70g you might need 50lb plus braid. Depends on how snaggy your waters are. If you are canal fishing and very little snags then 40-50lb is perfect. If it's rivers with snags then I still used 80lb braid. A savage gear 4 play 19cm at 52g still has chunky hooks that need lots of power to bend them out. hope that helps a bit mate.

    • @BUSHCRAPPING
      @BUSHCRAPPING 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah thanks mate probably go to 80lb then. didnt think about bending hooks out lol, when you fish light lures once its gone its usually gone lol

  • @SetthehookFishing
    @SetthehookFishing 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    what brand of braid is that? I recommend Suffix 832 if they make it that high in pounds. Best braid ever.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Setthehook Fishing That's Power Pro braid in 80lb. Not tried the suffix stuff but then that's because like I said in the video, if I'm happy I rarely try new stuff. The few times in the past I tried other brands was when I had failures, so you lose confidence and don't buy it again.

    • @SetthehookFishing
      @SetthehookFishing 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +River Piker Thanks for the response! I respect that. But if you ever decide to try a new brand give it a shot! kicks powerpro's ass!

    • @SetthehookFishing
      @SetthehookFishing 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Setthehook Fishing It is much more smooth and never absorbs water, casts much further and lasts longer. Also more resistant to nicks and cuts.

    If you don't mind mate didn't manage to catch the reel type your using there, shouldn't be a Komodo would it ?

    • @riverpiker

      +undrawingend Yes matey, Komodo 364 (sometimes labelled 350 but same thing). Great reel, I have two now and very happy with them.

    I have a 3 to 15grm cast weight Shimano for very light jig fishing. the guy at angling direct spooled 30lb braid ? do I need to spend another 20 quid on another load of line

      seems wayyyy over the top. for this rod i wouldnt use heavier than 12# line

  • @SebastianDavidPB
    @SebastianDavidPB 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oi! I've managed to lose lures even with wire trace on, bigger pike seem to bite clean thru wolfram leaders, and to make matters worse the zander in my area are trace shy most of the time, so the only middle ground is a dedicated fluorocarbon leader, usually 0.40 thickness

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey bud. What size traces? Are they the light ones? I've not used them myself, just heard they were ok, but obviously not if you are getting bite offs. It's tough to get it right when there are pike about but you aren't really targetting them. Is the fluoro doign the job for you now?

    • @SebastianDavidPB
      @SebastianDavidPB 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, heavy fluoro seems to work, as light wolfram 7 and 10kg breaking strengths are useless, however I have yet to try titanium, I'll be damned if they bite that clean as well lol

    • @SebastianDavidPB
      @SebastianDavidPB 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And about the dedicated fluoro leader, there are brands out like Daiwa Prorex Fluorocarbon Leader 30 cm 36 kg, as an example

  • @ballkeeper6662

    good video,with 3olb braid what wire strength would you suggest ?thanks

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris I just match it. You could go with the theory of slightly weaker trace so in the event of a break off you don't lose yards of line also. I usually just match the trace to braid and have found with my palomar knot it always breaks at the knot.
