- The sensory filled floral subject here, evokes calmness and serenity. Here, Philip discusses the beautiful 'Flowers in an Interior' (1949) by Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris (1889-1982).
The piece previously belonged to fellow plant enthusiast, and friend of the artist, Beth Chatto.
We are delighted that 'Flowers in an Interior' is currently on view at our exhibition 'From Still Lifes to Socialites'.

Thank you for your continuing channel. I appreciate all your work. You are England’s National Treasure.
Thank you Philip! I had really not known about Cedric Morris before your videos, but now he's one of my favourite painters.
Thank you for this insight into Morris‘s life and loves.
It is fresh and so full of joy! Thank you for sending those little delightful moments to your fans.... from the Alentejo, Portugal :)
Such beauty and freshness to his work, and we're so thrilled you can experience it from Portugal!
Beautiful! The artst's biography makes the experience of this painting much more profound.
Philip, always a pleasure, as you delight us with fabulous art
Thank you!
I just love his colours.
It’s a pleasure to hear you talk about Cedric Morris and flowers again! Looking forward to more!
I started painting a little over a year ago and recently discovered Cedric Morris. I love his paintings and am glad to learn more about him and his beautiful flowers!
From someone who is as passionate about plants as I am about painting this really strikes a chord with me.
Thank you …
Such an exquisite painting. The bearded irises are superb. Beth must have got so much pleasure gazing at this artwork. Thank you Philip.
Love the light airy feel to this! Thanks Philip!!!
Yes, there is a harmony between the worlds of paint & brush and the world of living green, blues, reds that sap runs through. I love the reality that - when you see, smell and touch a clone of - say an iris developed by Morris - you are seeing essentially the same plant that he saw. I find in the world of roses a real emotion can well up - for example w Souvenier de Docteur Jamaine - a rose created by a man who some say was saved by Dr. Jamaine (who died too young). Growing this rose this year...
Really enjoying your videos - I often find your offerings to be profound.
Warm regards
Jennie
Wonderfully spoken
Very kindly and well put. Thank you p
Good to see you sweetie, missed the lock down art series. I love your home and your art collection.
Great painting for beginning of summer. We need to look more at nature, or the artists vision of nature.
Thanks for the great image.
Thank you, yes absolutely, and Morris is the perfect artist to look to nature with.
This painting is, to me, at once both wonderfully uplifting and relaxing. Many thanks for continuing to open my amateur eyes to a broad range of painters and styles. How, by the way, is your own Cedric? You kindly included a glimpse in your video and he looks as content as ever!
Thank you William, we're so pleased you find it so! Cedric is (as you can see) relaxing his way into Summer!
What a lovely picture. I am grateful that you share your knowledge with us, and make it so interesting. Is my memory correct in telling me that Beth Chatto's son Daniel married Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones?
This truly brightened my day thank you as always. Are you working on a book on Morris? I’d love to know much more about artist and plantsMan!
After viewing (for the second time), the VAN GOUGH AND NATURE exhibition, in 2015(?) at the CLARK Art Institute, in Williamstown, Massachusetts (the Berkshires): I fell in love with Van Gough's works, especially his formation of leaves and vegetation; his use of impasto. I can see the influence, here in Morris' work. Ta, Philip.~
PS I'm so happy I picked-up the exhibition book, to be able to relive the experiences, somewhat. And, the Van Gough playing cards, which remain still in the box, sealed. I would have purchased the all-over-print shirts, but they were not in my size.
Hello Phillip, as a recent keen viewer of fake or fortune, I wanted to ask if you had any idea why none of the series prior to series 9 are available on any UK streaming services (including iPlayer)? I'm sure you aren't involved in any of the licensing agreements but i wondered if there were any strings you could pull. I was very much looking forward to seeing the other series. Alex
Is not the name of his dog also Cedric? Says it all 🤔
I think I can even smell them….from here
It's as though we're in the room!
***Hello Phillip, I was wondering if you could help me please. I have a mystery watercolour that I can’t for the life of me, out a name to it.
Many names have been thrown around from Cazabon, Anton Schranz, to Giacinto Gigante.
I have been trying to work out the hand myself, but have had no luck.***
Please please help me.
Best wishes,
Amy Bailey.
Is he a transvestite?
The ugliest Irises anyone’s ever painted!
Thank you!!!
