David McVicar's spectacular, almost cinematic Royal Opera production of Umberto Giordano's gripping opera set in late 18th-century Paris, with Jonas Kaufmann, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Željko Lučić in the lead roles. Beautiful, historically-informed sets and costumes by Robert Jones and Jenny Tiramani evoke the profound social changes of pre- and post-revolutionary France.
Giordano's Andrea Chénier, with libretto by Puccini's regular collaborator Luigi Illica, is loosely based on the life and tragic death of the French poet André Chénier, who was executed during the French Revolution. The premiere on 28 March 1896 was a great success, and the opera became one of the most popular examples of the verismo (literally, 'realist') movement in Italian opera.
Giordano perfectly captures contrasting atmospheres through music including an elegant Gavotte (Act I) and the popular revolutionary songs 'La Carmagnole' and the 'Marseillaise'. Not surprisingly, the tenor protagonist gets some fine solos, including Act I's ardent aria 'Un dì, all'azzurro spazio', and Act IV's nostalgic 'Come un bel dì di maggio'. But Maddalena and Gérard also have wonderful arias: the former's impassioned 'La mamma morta', and the latter's tormented 'Nemico della patria?' as he wrestles with his conscience in Act III.

This is absolutely magnificent. It's a gorgeous sound and brilliantly acted. I've listened to other singers performing Andrea Chenier and I honestly believe that Jonas Kaufmann has made this role his own. I think this performance is the best out there and will take a great deal and superhuman skills to better it.

I saw him in Barcelona in 2018 in Andrea Chenier with the marvellous Sondra Radvanovski , both of them were amazing, stunning. the role of Chénier seems tailor made for him👏🎶🙏🎶👏

I’m not a fan of Kauffman, but the criticism of him is over the top. My complaint is that he sounds like a baritone or heldentenor singing Italian repertoire, but it’s a first rate voice. This actually seems like a good role for him.
He's not horrible but he's only adequate. The voice is neither beautiful nor flexible. He's a good musician
I would like to hear this. I'm a Kaufmann fan, but the recording volume is too low. This whole video needs to be remastered. I could do it myself. It's very easy if you have copy of Cyberlink PowerDirector. This is a very popular program and raising the volume of the voices to something more appropriate takes only seconds. I have bad hearing but I also can hear most opera clips just fine on my mid-quality computer speakers. If Google is listening - have one of your house geniuses invent a feature that allows the volume to be be raised or lowered beyond the limits set by the original poster.
It is January 16, 2021. I'll give you out there a week. Then I will make a copy - adjust only the volume, nothing else and then repost it. I don't know if this violates TH-cam rules. Since remastering a editing TH-cam videos is now so easy. Google should think about these issues. I suggest that you allow reposting if the new version gives credit to the old version and posts a link.
I may forget about this by next week.

I just posted a remastered version. I only did one thing - I made it louder. I could have noodled with other parameters but maybe next time. It took about ten minutes to do. It's not perfect because this is just a demo. I should show up somewhere tomorrow at noon. I my post it here or on my channel.
The sound is a little compressed sounding. Maybe I can do better.

The main reason for drooling when singing is Gastroesophageal reflux disease flux (GERD = Gastroesophageal reflux disease). Possibly he suffers form it.
Some singers do, he always does...sometimes literally spits.
I haven't heard Kaufmann live because he's never ventured to San Francisco Opera. This recording is not flattering. He sounds weak here because the recording level is so low. Further down in the comments I give a link to a remastered version that is louder. I think it is probably more reflective of his actual sound in the theater.
Everyone should be aware that it is quite easy to manipulate an opera video so as to favor one singer versus another. There is a prolific TH-cam opera excerpts poster who adjusts the sound so as to "prove" his favored singers are better than other singers whom he dislikes. You can probably guess whom I'm referring to. Most of what some like to call squillo is in fact the presence of the fourth or singers formant. This is a natural resonance peak in operatic voices centered around 2.5KHz. It is caused by an impedance mismatch between the larynx and the pharynx. It is created by the lowered larynx position. It's why you can hear a solo singer over the orchestra.
With modern software and with a parametric or a third octave equalizer, it's trivial to make a tenor sound better or worse. Lets say you want to prove that Placido Domingo wasn't as good as some earlier tenors. You just cut Domingo's formant frequencies and boost those of the other guys. This I believe has in fact been done. Some of these opera gurus with an ax to grind post some very suspicious video tracks. Older singers sound crisp and Domingo sounds dull.
Beware.

J'ai écouté et franchement, Jonas Kaufmann. Aucune brillance, tout est effort et les aigus mal placés. Oui, il a un joli timbre barytonant pour un ténor. Joans devrait s'inspirer d'un certain Giuseppe Giacomini qui était encore plus dramatique avec des aigus brillant, souple, puissant... Combien de temps va t il encore chanter ? Je ne suis pas optimiste. Il va finir par chanter des rôles de baryton...
Yes, Jonas, stick to what you do best: Grand Opera. Forget the Christmas rubbish!! (oh, and "Lieder"). Remember the German saying: "Schuster, bleib bei deinen Leisten".

I have heard tons of baritones who have better ringing tops than Kaufmann, and can sing higher notes too. Mr Kaufmann, you have a voice of a bass. Please go back to sing the bass part of operas.

Good singing, no more. A bit too quick, some guttural effects, some swooping, some careless rushed phrasing.
No squillo, throaty. I can't fully blame him for this is a very difficult aria. Listen to Corelli and Del Monaco and learn how this aria is ought to be sung. Bad singing.
You're just wrong. If you can't notice the squillo in his voice, find a doctor to your ears. Kauffman has a very Wagnerian voice. But you're totally wrong about his voice in this video.

Lo squillo ce l'hanno i tenori... e credo che Kaufmann sia un baritono acuto che riesce a cavarsela molto bene nei ruoli tenorili.
È molto bello e musicale... e tanto basta per cantare nei più grandi teatri...anche perché, nel panorama lirico attuale, non si vedono cantanti all'orizzonte degni dei grandi nomi del passato, purtroppo...
