In my neighborhood you could hear that bass line coming from a garage a few houses away from my house. It was the main bass line for garage bands warming up on Saturday mornings. Those bands worshiped Cream.
Ginger Baker's approach to the drums in the song is quite unusual he really is pushing the one and three instead of the usual 2 and 4 where the snare would live it's very tribal and it gives the song and the repetitive riff a kick ass memorable sort of power that I think would have been lost had he gone with the traditional BackBeat on this
The drummer Ginger Baker is one of the most fascinating people in music. He helped define the wild man drummer idea. Even near the end of his life the sign on the gates of his estate didn't say "Beware of Dog." It said "Beware of Mr. Baker."

Then I was beyond surprised and fascinated when the guitar solo begins by quoting the opening line of 'Blue Moon', a 1961 hit for the Marcels. Bruce and his songwriting partner, lyricist Pete Brown, were scratching their heads over a way into the song they were trying to write with this insidious riff, and noticed the sky was growing gradually brighter outside. Bingo. Brown's surreal, impressionistic lyrics perfectly suited the times and the impact of three virtuosi jamming TF out, balls to the wall. See also 'Theme for an Imaginary Western', by Mountain, another personal fave penned by the duo, and by Cream, 'Doing That Scrapyard Thing', 'Badge', by Clapton and George Harrison, and 'Deserted Cities of the Heart'. This was one of the first albums I ever bought (with allowance and baby sitting money) and is still one of my favorites!
Best part of this song is the drums. Best Ginger Baker bit: in a previous band, he attacked the bassist with a knife IN THE MIDDLE OF A CONCERT.
