There's definitely some lines in there that can be seen as CRWBY talking about Monty. Talking about how hard its been, moving away from what they knew. Not knowing (and being scared of) what will happen next. Knowing how bad it can get. Bad things do happen. They've all lost something, but they can't give up. Keep moving forward, or you'll never see what beautiful things may be next, or never see how Monty's work could help them or other people. They know it can feel impossible, but they have to try, if not for themselves, then for Monty, and for the fans (present and future). We miss you, Monty.

It is basically saying that due to what Ruby did to her this is how Cinder ended up thinking of her. Cinder's hesitation this season is out of fear of being so damaged again but now she believes she can face the fear that Ruby has come to represent.
ChocolateRob I never really thought about her being scared about being badly hurt again. I always saw that scene as just pure revenge and nothing else. Interesting to think that she is afraid of Ruby's power or being hurt in general, makes her an even more interesting character.

I think it's bad that Salem has connections to Lionheart because not only has she got a mole among the main characters but she could also potentially have a relic in her possession. My thoughts is that she already has the destruction relic and my theory is that whoever controls the destruction relic, they are the ones who control Grimm. It's just a theory and Salem may just be another thing entirely but from what we've gotten so far, I wouldn't say it's entirely far fetched.
People keep assuming Qrow is the Scarecrow, but that wouldn't make any sense at all. why would the Lion and Tin Man be the headmasters of two academies while the Scarecrow isn't? Ozpin is quite obviously the Wizardof Oz. Qrow mentions "Sometimes i don't even think he has a heart." referring to Ironwood, the Tin Man, and it's assumed that Lionheart allied with Salem out of fear, hence being a coward. But Qrow isn't stupid or brainless, he's one of the smartest characters in the show, so why would he be the Scarecrow, instead of the more plausible idea that it's Shade's Headmaster? That being said, Qrow does have his own presumed spot in mythology, possibly one of Odin's two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, who served as his eyes and ears. And what did Qrow do for Ozpin? He went out and gathered intel, and relayed it back to him. It's possible Raven did the same before she left on her own. That could also relate to "The Last Eye is Blinded" cuz when Raven left, Ozpin "lost an eye" and with Qrow assumed dead, the last eye was blinded as well.
I figured that Dorothy will be the Shade Academy Headmistress. The reason Qrow is considered the Scarecrow other than his name is because he drinks a lot and drinking dulls the mind.

Tyrian spoke of Salem as his goddess. If he's literal, which as crazy as he is he probably was, then he disappointed his goddess. That's why he was so upset. And I like that Salem didn't kill him. I've always thought villains who killed underlings who failed were stupid. Yeah punish them, but killing them is just a waste of resources and can lead to eventual resentment and eventual betrayal by underlings who don't feel valued. She punished Tyrian the best way she could, by telling him she was disappointed in him. And I think the 4 are among the most powerful fighters, but so is Qrow. Qrow is part of Ozpin's main group, the counter to Salem's group. They're likely on a similar level, but Qrow's semblance gave him an advantage. Goodwitch could likely go toe to toe with them as well, considering her telekinesis and incredibly advanced dust use. and it seems like you guys forgot about the Relics left behind by the gods. That's what Salem is searching for at Beacon, and what she likely has considering Mistral's relic guardian is aligned with her. I liked the volume, it was a recovery volume after the intense ending of vol 3. But I think Weiss actually had a lot happen at the end. She's completely cut ties with the Schnee family (for now). She isn't heiress anymore, she has no ability to call on the power of her last name anymore. While it seemed to be something she wanted going by her rebellion against her father, it's going to be a huge difference for her and her life going forward. Though I am hoping there's a lot more focus and growth for Ruby next volume. I'm wondering if next volume will have RWBY/JNR discovering more about Salem's lot and if it'll finally reveal if they're the ones who killed (or maybe captured) Summer. That'd be a interesting conflict around Ruby and what she might do in Mistral. She could wind up a lot like Yang was when she was younger, rashly rushing forward and attacking people in an effort to find out the truth about what happened to her mom and if Salem's group was responsible.

From what I understand, the first three chapters were supposed to be basically the first season. That's why the end of chapter three was so much more intense than all the others (this one included), it was basically the season finale. Chapter four is pretty much the first-third of season two so it is still in the world building phase introducing the story arc of season two.
This finale was great. I love how it concluded and what it is setting up for Volume 5. When Ruby wrote the letter, watching the rest of Team RNJR lie down together in an embrace made me cry. You can see how hard it's been without Pyrrha throughout this season but just seeing that shows how hard they are trying to cope with their loss. This entire season delivered on the idea of developing its characters, separating team RWBY to do it. But it's okay, cause this allowed them all to develop. The band will be coming back together soon. They're all heading to Haven. Team RWBY and RNJR will be fighting side-by-side once again. Looking forward to RWBY Volume 5 later this year. :)

a theory someone came up with. the volumes follow the 4 seasons. spring is the rise. summer is the happyness. fall is when everything goes to shit. and winter is how they deal during the bad times. if its true. then the rise will happen in volume 5 with the teams comming back together.
I think it's more along the lines of the each "season" being a season, and each being associated with their respective kingdom. Volumes 1-3 were fall, as it was set during that period, dealt mostly with the Fall Maiden and the fall of Beacon and was set entirely within Vale, which is the autumn kingdom (they have a nearby massive forest called Forever Fall). Volumes 4-5 are spring, as it appears to be set during that time period (we saw the very end of the autumn/very start of winter at the end of volume 3, then it jumped ahead several months, apparantly skipping winter entirely), dealt with the Spring Maiden and getting to/defending Haven, which is in Mistral, the kingdom most associated with spring (WoR Mistral talks about their people having a great respect for nature, and spring is the time of new life and growth, so would be important to them.
They left for Haven because they wanted revenge on Cinder for the loss of Pyrrha and all they knew about Cinder, Emerald, and Mercury is that they claimed to hail from Mistral, and Haven is in Mistral.
Since you brought up Qrow's semblance being hinted at in Volume 3, a lot of things are teased before they are revealed. I have a feeling Monty was thinking several seasons ahead whenever he would write things into the show. Lines such as "you have silver eyes" turn out to be of great importance seasons later.
Also, we're worried about Watts meeting with Lionheart because he was sent to Mistral to meet with Salem's informant...and as headmaster, Lionheart is supposed to be part of the crew defending against people trying to claim all of the relics and maiden powers. I get where you're questioning how you're supposed to feel about Salem, but if you think about it, wouldn't a truly evil person do whatever caused the most harm. Disappointing the "queen" he worshipped was the most painful thing Tyrion could experience. Salem played evil (or at least cruel) very well.
Julie Nichols Monty has said and it's official on the site that Ruby is based on Red Riding Hood. But the Dorothy theory does hold water. Maybe her mother Summer was the Dorothy character?
I think it's more likely that her mother is the Dorothy character, but we also don't know what kind of character the headmaster of Shade academy is. Because for the longest time I thought that Tai Yang was the cowardly lion and he's not. So, who knows.
In the books Dorothy had silver slippers and in that movie they were ruby. Here you have a character called Ruby with silver eyes. Definitely not a coincidence.
Don't compare volume 3 with 4. Volume 1-3 are one season, one arc (Beacon arc). Volume 4 is like volume 1 the beginning of a new arc, the Mistral/Heaven arc, so of course volume 4 begins much slower than volume 3. So we all have to wait untill volume 6 to compare it with volume 3.

This is just my own theory but I think Salem is one of four things: 1. A reincarnation of the God of Darkness (thus why she knows Ozpin--assuming he is the god of light) 2. A familiar or servant made by the God of Darkness 3. The first grimm 4. A possessed Summer Rose? Also, the last eye is blinded i believe refers to Tyrian losing sight of his mission (not capturing ruby in favor of stinging qrow)
I would call this a "bridge" volume. You can't be high octane all the time or you lose the shock factor. I felt this volume was great for what it needed to do.

I feel like the whole Oscar/Oz thing would have been much more impactful if they had cut out every scene with them except for the last episode. All the other scenes could have come back as flashbacks in volume 5 because the audience will have figured out what happened by the last episode alone.
Think back to volume 2 when Obleck asked them why they wanted to be huntress, everyone but ruby questioned their motivation after it was posed to them, so this was kind of a continuing physical representation of that

The first two volumes were happy fun time where everyone succeeds and a little character development happens, volume 3 was everybody being fast-tracked to the real world which they were not ready for, and volume 4 is everyone growing up and dealing with their own issues and struggles caused by the Fall of Beacon.

Im assuming that this volume is the start of a new arc where as the first arc ended at volume 3. Btw its possible that Lionheart might turn on Ozpin and Co. Also going back to volume 3 if you look at the Cinder Vs Ozpin if you look at it you will notice that he doesnt't really use any magical/semblance type attack. Its mostly just physical attacks and dodging and finally he just has no choice but to try and tank the attack from Cinder so i assume he uses his already near depleted magic to try and shield himself but clearly isn't enough and the reason for this is because if Oz really is the wizard they most of if not all of his magic was passed to the Maidens.

They call the horseman Grimm a "Knucklavee" it's based off of the Scottish folklore of "The Devil of the Sea" it's a story about how a monster so horrible that the Scottish god of the sea banished it to the ocean. And the only thing it eats is humans and it uses its long arms to pull people (and their horses if they are on one) into the ocean and whatever it pulls is either eaten or lost at sea. Blake's big thing was getting over one of her big character flaws that Sun kind of has to hit her over the head with to finally get it to sink in. And that's mostly to let your friend's help you when they want to.

and it was the 'Last Eye' because Qrow and Raven are based on the left and right eye of Odin. The Crow (The left eye) and The Raven (The right eye) the two messengers of the Almighty Half-blind God of Valhalla, Odin. basically because Raven (who is supposed to symbolize the 'unspecified' eye that Odin sacrificed in a battle) doesn't work with Ozpin (Odin- in this context) who Salem seems to know is still alive. and because she 'assumed' that Qrow was dead, she's basically making a comment saying the only functioning eye that was any use to Him (ozpin-Odin) was effectively blinded. in other words "the messenger was killed" and as such, Salem has (in her mind) 'Much less' things to worry about.
Tyrian believes Salem to be his Goddess (as he puts it) so it's more like he adores her and doesn't want to disappoint her. If you think about it Salem hasn't hurt any of her allies, even going as far as to defend Cinder from Watts. She's like a cares for her underlings but hates Ozpin......for currently unknown reasons

It wasn't really bad this volume, it had a lot of cool moments. The main problem is that with the cast all separated it barely has a focus in one story and the passing is a bit off. With the promise of team RWBY meeting up in Mistral hopefully it will have more focus and see how they'll interact after being away so long from each other, specially Yang and Blake, I can tell for sure it's gonna be some drama there.
I'm affraid is gonna happen, the show might not gonna do that but the fandom inevitably we have no control over that... I confess I don't mind the ship, is actually my 3rd favorite ship, but I don't like to argue about that. Why Ruby went to Mistral/Haven? Because they knew CINDER was from there and they were searching for answers. Qrow told them Cinder and co are from Mistral.
The Cowardly Lion is very likely Taiyang, Ruby and Yang's father since he is probably a very powerful person but is mostly against fighting and is secluded from the world because of the loss he has suffered which in the eyes of a lot of people would be a coward.
I hope they do Season 5 starting in a few weeks. I wonder if they will learn the volumes are seasons Volume 1 is Spring a new start and intro to the show too, 2 is Summer lot's of build up and things happening, 3 is Fall where the end of summer happens and things... die and 4 is Winter kinda Stagnant and not much happening until the end when Spring is about to come again 5.

I love that this line was spoken over the image of Cinder using her full power to attack an illusion of Ruby. It is basically saying that due to what Ruby did to her this is how Cinder ended up thinking of her. Cinder's hesitation this season is out of fear of being so damaged again but now she believes she can face the fear that Ruby has come to represent.
ChocolateRob I never really thought about her being scared about being badly hurt again. I always saw that scene as just pure revenge and nothing else. Interesting to think that she is afraid of Ruby's power or being hurt in general, makes her an even more interesting character.

I think it's bad that Salem has connections to Lionheart because not only has she got a mole among the main characters but she could also potentially have a relic in her possession. My thoughts is that she already has the destruction relic and my theory is that whoever controls the destruction relic, they are the ones who control Grimm. It's just a theory and Salem may just be another thing entirely but from what we've gotten so far, I wouldn't say it's entirely far fetched.
People keep assuming Qrow is the Scarecrow, but that wouldn't make any sense at all. why would the Lion and Tin Man be the headmasters of two academies while the Scarecrow isn't? Ozpin is quite obviously the Wizardof Oz. Qrow mentions "Sometimes i don't even think he has a heart." referring to Ironwood, the Tin Man, and it's assumed that Lionheart allied with Salem out of fear, hence being a coward. But Qrow isn't stupid or brainless, he's one of the smartest characters in the show, so why would he be the Scarecrow, instead of the more plausible idea that it's Shade's Headmaster?
That being said, Qrow does have his own presumed spot in mythology, possibly one of Odin's two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, who served as his eyes and ears. And what did Qrow do for Ozpin? He went out and gathered intel, and relayed it back to him. It's possible Raven did the same before she left on her own. That could also relate to "The Last Eye is Blinded" cuz when Raven left, Ozpin "lost an eye" and with Qrow assumed dead, the last eye was blinded as well.
I figured that Dorothy will be the Shade Academy Headmistress. The reason Qrow is considered the Scarecrow other than his name is because he drinks a lot and drinking dulls the mind.

The song (can't remember its name for the life of me) playing as Ruby writes to Yang is honestly one of my favorite in the series. It's just so serene and Casey's range is like the best thing ever. How does one go to smooth and melodic from badass rock?
Tyrian spoke of Salem as his goddess. If he's literal, which as crazy as he is he probably was, then he disappointed his goddess. That's why he was so upset. And I like that Salem didn't kill him. I've always thought villains who killed underlings who failed were stupid. Yeah punish them, but killing them is just a waste of resources and can lead to eventual resentment and eventual betrayal by underlings who don't feel valued. She punished Tyrian the best way she could, by telling him she was disappointed in him. And I think the 4 are among the most powerful fighters, but so is Qrow. Qrow is part of Ozpin's main group, the counter to Salem's group. They're likely on a similar level, but Qrow's semblance gave him an advantage. Goodwitch could likely go toe to toe with them as well, considering her telekinesis and incredibly advanced dust use.
and it seems like you guys forgot about the Relics left behind by the gods. That's what Salem is searching for at Beacon, and what she likely has considering Mistral's relic guardian is aligned with her.
I liked the volume, it was a recovery volume after the intense ending of vol 3. But I think Weiss actually had a lot happen at the end. She's completely cut ties with the Schnee family (for now). She isn't heiress anymore, she has no ability to call on the power of her last name anymore. While it seemed to be something she wanted going by her rebellion against her father, it's going to be a huge difference for her and her life going forward.
Though I am hoping there's a lot more focus and growth for Ruby next volume. I'm wondering if next volume will have RWBY/JNR discovering more about Salem's lot and if it'll finally reveal if they're the ones who killed (or maybe captured) Summer. That'd be a interesting conflict around Ruby and what she might do in Mistral. She could wind up a lot like Yang was when she was younger, rashly rushing forward and attacking people in an effort to find out the truth about what happened to her mom and if Salem's group was responsible.
If she wants to cut ties with the schnee family name, completely, logic dictates that she will need to marry someone later on to get rid of her last name, or change her name altogether

From what I understand, the first three chapters were supposed to be basically the first season. That's why the end of chapter three was so much more intense than all the others (this one included), it was basically the season finale. Chapter four is pretty much the first-third of season two so it is still in the world building phase introducing the story arc of season two.
Tyrian only lost because he got cocky. He had gotten Qrow, and he made the mistake of not considering Ruby a legitimate threat.

This finale was great. I love how it concluded and what it is setting up for Volume 5. When Ruby wrote the letter, watching the rest of Team RNJR lie down together in an embrace made me cry. You can see how hard it's been without Pyrrha throughout this season but just seeing that shows how hard they are trying to cope with their loss.
This entire season delivered on the idea of developing its characters, separating team RWBY to do it. But it's okay, cause this allowed them all to develop. The band will be coming back together soon. They're all heading to Haven. Team RWBY and RNJR will be fighting side-by-side once again.
Looking forward to RWBY Volume 5 later this year. :)

A lot of mythological creatures, particularly "evil" ones, can be escaped by crossing running water. The idea is that water is a purifying element that washes away evil energy, similar to salt, garlic, and silver. a theory someone came up with. the volumes follow the 4 seasons. spring is the rise. summer is the happyness. fall is when everything goes to shit. and winter is how they deal during the bad times. if its true. then the rise will happen in volume 5 with the teams comming back together.
I think it's more along the lines of the each "season" being a season, and each being associated with their respective kingdom. Volumes 1-3 were fall, as it was set during that period, dealt mostly with the Fall Maiden and the fall of Beacon and was set entirely within Vale, which is the autumn kingdom (they have a nearby massive forest called Forever Fall).
Volumes 4-5 are spring, as it appears to be set during that time period (we saw the very end of the autumn/very start of winter at the end of volume 3, then it jumped ahead several months, apparantly skipping winter entirely), dealt with the Spring Maiden and getting to/defending Haven, which is in Mistral, the kingdom most associated with spring (WoR Mistral talks about their people having a great respect for nature, and spring is the time of new life and growth, so would be important to them.
They left for Haven because they wanted revenge on Cinder for the loss of Pyrrha and all they knew about Cinder, Emerald, and Mercury is that they claimed to hail from Mistral, and Haven is in Mistral.

Since you brought up Qrow's semblance being hinted at in Volume 3, a lot of things are teased before they are revealed. I have a feeling Monty was thinking several seasons ahead whenever he would write things into the show. Lines such as "you have silver eyes" turn out to be of great importance seasons later.

I get where you're questioning how you're supposed to feel about Salem, but if you think about it, wouldn't a truly evil person do whatever caused the most harm. Disappointing the "queen" he worshipped was the most painful thing Tyrion could experience. Salem played evil (or at least cruel) very well.
Julie Nichols Monty has said and it's official on the site that Ruby is based on Red Riding Hood. But the Dorothy theory does hold water. Maybe her mother Summer was the Dorothy character?
I think it's more likely that her mother is the Dorothy character, but we also don't know what kind of character the headmaster of Shade academy is. Because for the longest time I thought that Tai Yang was the cowardly lion and he's not. So, who knows.
In the books Dorothy had silver slippers and in that movie they were ruby.

Characters can have more than one inspiration. There is nothing wrong with Ruby being both Little Red Riding Hood and Dorothy.
Don't compare volume 3 with 4. Volume 1-3 are one season, one arc (Beacon arc). Volume 4 is like volume 1 the beginning of a new arc, the Mistral/Heaven arc, so of course volume 4 begins much slower than volume 3. So we all have to wait untill volume 6 to compare it with volume 3.

Volumes 4-6 = Act 2
Volumes 7-9 = Act 3

To be honest I think it would have been too soon if we lost people in this volume, they've barely had time to digest what happened in the last volume. 🤔

I could see there being 4 full seasons honestly, each one focused on a different kingdom. Which, if they give us atleast 2-3 volumes per season, would easily take us up to volume 9-12. Not sure if we're done fully with the Mistral arc as of volume 5 yet though.
That's of course assuming that the Haven arc is three volumes long.
This is just my own theory but I think Salem is one of four things:
1. A reincarnation of the God of Darkness (thus why she knows Ozpin--assuming he is the god of light)
2. A familiar or servant made by the God of Darkness
3. The first grimm
4. A possessed Summer Rose?
Also, the last eye is blinded i believe refers to Tyrian losing sight of his mission (not capturing ruby in favor of stinging qrow)

I would call this a "bridge" volume. You can't be high octane all the time or you lose the shock factor. I felt this volume was great for what it needed to do.

I feel like the whole Oscar/Oz thing would have been much more impactful if they had cut out every scene with them except for the last episode. All the other scenes could have come back as flashbacks in volume 5 because the audience will have figured out what happened by the last episode alone.
Think back to volume 2 when Obleck asked them why they wanted to be huntress, everyone but ruby questioned their motivation after it was posed to them, so this was kind of a continuing physical representation of that
Now that you guys are all caught up, I was thinking that if you're into song analysis you can do videos where you have discussions over some of the songs of RWBY. Songs like Divide, Red Like Roses I + 2, Die, Boop and Cold would be cool to try out.

The first two volumes were happy fun time where everyone succeeds and a little character development happens, volume 3 was everybody being fast-tracked to the real world which they were not ready for, and volume 4 is everyone growing up and dealing with their own issues and struggles caused by the Fall of Beacon.

So... After Tyrian tells Salem he poisoned Qrow. Salem muses that "the last eye is blinded". Could be a reference to Norse mythology on how Odin uses ravens/crows as his eyes and messengers. Which could then be applied to how Ozpin used Qrow and Raven as his eyes. Raven being the first eye to be blinded because she nope'd her way into neutrality (why/how this happened is theory craft at the moment).

The reason RNJR went to Haven was because Qrow mentioned to Ruby that the only possible leads to what is happening was in Haven at the end of volume 3.
Im assuming that this volume is the start of a new arc where as the first arc ended at volume 3. Btw its possible that Lionheart might turn on Ozpin and Co. Also going back to volume 3 if you look at the Cinder Vs Ozpin if you look at it you will notice that he doesnt't really use any magical/semblance type attack. Its mostly just physical attacks and dodging and finally he just has no choice but to try and tank the attack from Cinder so i assume he uses his already near depleted magic to try and shield himself but clearly isn't enough and the reason for this is because if Oz really is the wizard they most of if not all of his magic was passed to the Maidens.

They call the horseman Grimm a "Knucklavee" it's based off of the Scottish folklore of "The Devil of the Sea" it's a story about how a monster so horrible that the Scottish god of the sea banished it to the ocean. And the only thing it eats is humans and it uses its long arms to pull people (and their horses if they are on one) into the ocean and whatever it pulls is either eaten or lost at sea. the reason they went to Haven was to ask questions due to the fact that Cinder was a recorded student at Haven. they went there to get answers because Qrow hinted to Ruby that answers could be found at Haven.
and it was the 'Last Eye' because Qrow and Raven are based on the left and right eye of Odin. The Crow (The left eye) and The Raven (The right eye) the two messengers of the Almighty Half-blind God of Valhalla, Odin. basically because Raven (who is supposed to symbolize the 'unspecified' eye that Odin sacrificed in a battle) doesn't work with Ozpin (Odin- in this context) who Salem seems to know is still alive. and because she 'assumed' that Qrow was dead, she's basically making a comment saying the only functioning eye that was any use to Him (ozpin-Odin) was effectively blinded. in other words "the messenger was killed" and as such, Salem has (in her mind) 'Much less' things to worry about.
Can we just appreciate that 4 2nd year students took down a Grimm that killed multiple seasoned Huntsmen?
Tyrian believes Salem to be his Goddess (as he puts it) so it's more like he adores her and doesn't want to disappoint her. If you think about it Salem hasn't hurt any of her allies, even going as far as to defend Cinder from Watts. She's like a cares for her underlings but hates Ozpin......for currently unknown reasons

It wasn't really bad this volume, it had a lot of cool moments. The main problem is that with the cast all separated it barely has a focus in one story and the passing is a bit off. With the promise of team RWBY meeting up in Mistral hopefully it will have more focus and see how they'll interact after being away so long from each other, specially Yang and Blake, I can tell for sure it's gonna be some drama there.

Qrow doesn't ACTUALLY turn into a crow guys. It's a representation of his semblance. Although some people seem to think it's Raven, which I don't believe.
Why Ruby went to Mistral/Haven? Because they knew CINDER was from there and they were searching for answers. Qrow told them Cinder and co are from Mistral.
The Cowardly Lion is very likely Taiyang, Ruby and Yang's father since he is probably a very powerful person but is mostly against fighting and is secluded from the world because of the loss he has suffered which in the eyes of a lot of people would be a coward.
I hope they do Season 5 starting in a few weeks. I wonder if they will learn the volumes are seasons Volume 1 is Spring a new start and intro to the show too, 2 is Summer lot's of build up and things happening, 3 is Fall where the end of summer happens and things... die and 4 is Winter kinda Stagnant and not much happening until the end when Spring is about to come again 5.
