Cutting 345 Sand Dune Soaps Using SoapEquipment.com's Manual Cutter Review Part 2

  • soapequipment.com Cutting cold processed soaps made in the Soap Equipment pro molds using their manual cutter and work bench! These tools are made in the USA and are original designs by Soap Equipment for 25 years! If you need professional equipment, they are the pros in the soapmaking industry!
This was my first trial and I may have done too much of a water discount, resulting in a soap a bit harder to cut. Next batch, I won’t so we can compare! This new equipment works differently from my present wooden mold and it is a learning curve for sure. I will keep you updated once I get my soap formula perfect for these molds.

Oh wow these seem super nice- but also pretty hard to use with that recipe, and it does limit your design choices as well

TheDragonGirl actually, you can do a lot of designs! I just went for something easy to start with. My formula was also water discounted which I won’t do next time as it make cutting the soap more difficult

@@ArianeArsenault yes it is too hard to cut soaps when it is water discounted. I could actually feel ur efforts as myself get tired with such a small batch itself. But a great applause for u. This can keep u evergreen maco women with good muscles and fit body lol

I don't know exactly what you call a water discount. I think AFTER 50/50 everything is adding water and there are differences of opinion about that but that is not my point and I actually think the opposite as to why it is sticking on you.
Mind you I haven't made nearly as much as you I have studied what I do thoroughly and I have found that stickiness comes from different sources that come to play to create stickiness. Firstly and foremost it is from an emulsion that is not quite blended so you have slightly loose water that is left behind when drying. That would translate to soap sticking to the sides. At the same time, in combination with that, a choice of oils: Different oils create different heat. If you don't want to create as high of a heat to make it crack choose a different oil or different percentage of oil OR add more water but then you run the risk of soap sticking to the sides and making it more difficult to take the mold apart.
This is my guess; I actually think that with that large amount you just thought you stick blended enough.
Soap acts just like concrete. When its not mixed enough you get loose water and salt at the top.
With me, I have noticed that it is more my choice of oils then my choice of water as to when I get stickiness. I also get it when I notice I didn't quite stick blend enough. Soap is still good and still the same.
It is just that the less dense water is pushed to the outside and that creates stickiness instead of smooth soap.

      @@ArianeArsenault
One more suggestion: I imagine those wires are very similar to wires I would use. You may not see or feel the difference and may even think they are smooth but 50lb fishing test line will go clean through that soap much smoother and easier and will not break.
I've used 30 lb fishing line on my soap before and it's like cutting butter and my soap is not soft when I cut it.
Sometimes steel leaves behind small bumps because it is slightly rough and causes friction and that is one reason that could be making it difficult for you.

Great review, but I am not going to lie, I was very nervous for you while you where leaning over those guide rods for the cutter. Looking forward to perhaps an update with the new formula you have mentioned, no water discount, to see how much easier that works out. Maybe suggest to the company a safety cap for the tops of the guide rods. I know they are blunt ends but accidents can happen and I could see someone slipping possibly and falling on top of them when up on a stool like you where.

@@ArianeArsenault It is much easier and safer to have another person help you. We have been using this set up for about two or three years. It is much simpler with a second person. We have had a few very close calls with the guard rods. Also, make sure you do not rock the cutter when trying to break through the top, it will cause the bearings to break loose from the little round piece that guard rods go through. They are in the black ring on the blue piece.

When I tried making my first soap (a week ago :D) it was so hard to find palm oil free recipes as it's what I wanted to avoid the most. Using eco friendly palm oil is a sollution to that problem.

The hydraulic press to go with the cutter would be more ideal. I know it takes up real estate in your work space..... but having to apply that much pressure at elevated heights leaves room for staff including you to slip and fall. One workman's compensation claim can drive up your rates and you will end up paying more than the cost of the hydraulic press. Please be very careful when using that cutter.

It’s great that you cut the soaps before they got any harder! You were really struggling to get through it. Over the last 4 years, I would imagine you have ironed out the kinks of getting through that much soap or maybe resort to having a helper when needed. I can only dream of getting my production up to that point to justify buying one of these block cutters. Great video!

Use your excess and odd pieces for samples. I slide my end cuts, misshapen and other weird missteps in soap making as giveaways for my customers. I make 1200 - 1800 lbs of soap a week in a 40lb batch size wood mold lined w painters plastic and cut into 4 lb loaves w a wire strung between two pieces of wood. I have 5 stores and a huge website. Each bar is hand cut and sold by weight. 2022 is my 25th year in business.
I’ve always wanted SoapEquipment system but don’t have the room. I’m getting ready to build a 10,000 sf facility with plans of ordering soap equipment system. After watching you struggle and risk injury, I think I may have to rethink my plan. I’m now wondering if the pneumatic system is worth the effort. Your soap is beautiful and i wish you luck in your handmade soap making business. Hooray for all of us who’ve turned a hobby/craft into thriving businesses and giving corporate America a run for their money.

Did you see that Joanna Couch has a pneumatic press that the cutters attach to? I think you need that! It is very cool

The video is very interesting to watch ! How much time it usually takes to sell all these soaps? So many !

I feel like the older big batch items you used are much easier to use especially because the bottom of the mold has the grooves in it so you only had to worry about removing the sides. I don’t remember what video it was that you used those in but I know it was a few years ago!

I still consider it hand made if you use hydrolics to assist in cutting it. Hope you will make softy baby soap on the next batch; I'd like to buy some. I like the small bars of soap and hope those will be available online, too. Thank you! I enjoy you and your videos and everything I have ordered from you!

I would use some of the odd size cuts in felted soaps. Priced per wt. Call them the well dressed squares, or hip to be square. Something like that.

Possibly just before you start to push making the first cut, what if you carefully scored the soap immediately alongside where the wires would enter the soap?

Release spray? Like you would use with epoxy type crafts.

Grace Thomas Robert this was my first attempt and I will have to reformulate to make my soap softer and easier to cut. I will keep you guys posted. Of course some soap designs I will keep in the slab molds, but for most my soaps these molds will be perfect! 😁

perhaps a very very little olive oil between wall piece (wall) and separator protector paper for easy peeling after wards. Coconut oil, any organic oil.

That was so difficult to cut!!
Question: 1.would it be easier with a hydraulic cutter?
    2. Would using silicon liner be easier?

Cat 9 soaper actually yes, a hydraulic cutter like the air cutter from Soap Equipment makes cutting effortless, but in my case, it was difficult to cut because I did a water discount and even though I kept it low, it was too much and I have to reformulate with no water discount. This way, the soap will be easier to cut

Watched one of your other videos and you mentioned avoiding Castrol oil. What can I add instead of Castrol oil to help with suds?

Girl, you need a hydronic powered cutter to save your back. To me, they are still hand made recipe and the cutting is just to make more quantity to support your business. It’s not like you have a factory with hundreds of employees. You are an inspiration. Take care of yourself and your health. ♥️⭐️🥰

Victoria Progris the air cutters is $$$ and also take a lot of space in the soap shop! I know once I have a bit of practice I will become a pro with these tools soon.

I wonder could you use a ratchet tie-down strap on each side and alternate ratcheting to start the soap off? Of course assuming you are working solo...
