5 years later and your video is still inspiring people with your diy cutter. I just used your design and modified it. I used precision band music wire found on Amazon for the amazing strength and I put an aluminum angle metal on the bottom and cut my grooves in it for the wire which prevents the wear and tear on the wood. I wish my wife had hobbies like this because I would have enjoyed it so much building her stuff like this. I'm the crafty person in the house and have a lot of hobbies including soap making.
Great idea, thanks so much for this video. I'd like to make a suggestion. Get a metal rod that will fit thought the eye of your screws. Turn your screws so they all line up and slide the rod though it. It will keep them from moving when you put pressure on them.
Hi Jan - just wanted to drop you a line to say well done on your video. There's a lot of advice out there on how to build a soap cutter, but yours is far the most useful and HONEST. I'm a scientist by training, and I value the ability to be critical of your own work. Apart from your excellent design, you have edited the video to tell people what worked/didn't work in "real time". Giving such valuable IP for free is what makes the interwebs so useful for everyone. You've inspired me to do the same...now I just need to come up with an idea that someone else might find useful. :)

Might be able to make a peg dope. I use it on my fiddle/violin to help hold the pegs. To keep them from turning. Same concept. I use beeswax, coconut oil and talcum powder to make my peg dope. Just rub it on the threads and insert back into the wood. Works good on the wood pegs. Excellent how to video.

I thought I would share my experience with fellow soap makers, in hopes that y'all don't have to go through the headache that I have. Right now, I just make soap for my family and friends (trying to perfect my recipe and build inventory before selling) I purchased a handmade wood soap mold from someone on Etsy, after doing much research. The price wasn't something I was happy about, but like you, my soap showed the "homemade cut" look. The wood soap mold came with a mold box made of wood and high density polyethylene plastic, in which to cut my soap. Well.. after using that cutter once.. I realized that cutting the soap with a knife would have made my soap look better. I was not happy with the "professional" cutting box at all! But after 2 years of trial and error, and many dollars spent, I have come to the conclusion that those $200-300 loaf cutters would have been better to start with, And maybe I could have saved all the time and money!

Very Handy. Making one for my wife (out of hardwood). Few other suggestions (which I am going to try). 1. Instead of using Screw Eyes with wood thread (the rings you use) Use ones with machine thread and a nut/washer/lock-washer. Drill the holes for the eyes all the way through the side boards and use nuts on the inside. I may have to make it a hair wider to avoid the ends of the nuts hitting the soap. With a nut and lock-washer they should loosen a lot less. That's on one side only. Other side gets screw pegs - "L" shaped pegs like on a key rack. With the wire tied off around them, only 1 side will need tightening. (Could even loop the wire around a shallow screw and just screw it into the side). Or, if you can find a cast off guitar or 2... tuning pegs (new ones are too expensive, about $4 -$5 each) 2. The angle brackets are a must for your construction, as with end screws only, the corners will "rack" and not stay at a right angle over time. Kudos on this. Great Job. 3. Getting a foam kneeling pad to cut on, hoping that the wires will continue to go down and it will push the soap up making the final cut through the bottom. 4. You are right about using a finer blade to cut the notches. I'm using a dremel tool. Just an FYI your saw blade is 1/8" thick... when making cuts, allow for that. :) Post pictures when I'm done. I LOVE your creativity and ingenuity. ZJ
The good thing is the Results of your idea 💡 that save you time and money at the end. And yes you're right we never think we are gonna like it so much, that we keep wasting money and putting those cutters that we use first on the side bcuz there after we end up thinking bigger so we end up paying double for the trouble but at the end of it, then your minds spinning for something handy and not that expensive that really works! Hi thank you for the video, I know it been 8 years since this video, If you decide to make another soap cutter or use the other side of the soap cutter box you can make holes with a drill instead of placing the wire over the box that way the wire doesn't cut into the wood and you have more strength in straightening the wire with out it loosing it up.

It’s much easier and it doesn’t matter to me that the slices may not be perfectly identical. It seems to be trendy to have rigged looking soap. Hello Jan, Thanks so much for sharing your Soap Cutter DIY idea. I thought it was very helpful and I love using the multi cutter for my loafs. It makes soap cutting so much easier and my bars are cut precisely. I did have to fine tone the wires after every use, but that is a small price to pay in achieving my goal of multi-cutting. A roll of galvanized wire is so economical that one could replace any of the wires as needed. I would definitely recommend your DIY Soap cutter to all!
So after several usage of my DIY soap cutter, I decided to rewire my cutter using Guitar string and Guitar Tuning Pegs Tuners... I will write a follow-up as to rather or not this fixed the loose wire situation!

Jan, I really like your tutorial style. You have a natural speaking style, and obviously confident in giving your opinions and sharing your insights. I was a bit surprised at the price of wire-type soap cutters available on some soap supply sites; I really would not want to devalue anyone's time as they take time to make, but it just seemed a bit too crazy to spend over $200 US for a hobbiest who enjoys making soap for gift giving.. especially since reviews were mixed and I couldn't be certain of easily returning it because I live in Canada. I know I am not a cheap person, and will spend on things that have no substitutes, but in this case, I thought this can probably be made if I am patient and careful. I thought "there's got to be someone out there who has DIY'd this" so I am happy your video came up! I like researching what others have done and then tweaking or improving upon that, but you seem to have done a lot of that for me. I swear I was wondering about how you were going to handle elevating the soap when you pushed the wires into the loaf, and then you mentioned it!!! You are definitely a very good problem solver. You're creative, resourceful and practical, but as someone said below, your best trait is that you are able to critique your own thoughts and work to continue improving on your technique(s) and materials. i designed and built my own soap box and lid. the other day i paid 42 total for supplies but its better than paying the prices that have for multi loaf boxes plus shipping. today i fashioned a loaf cutter out of two curved piece of wood from a broken chair and guitar strings i had laying around. im glad to see this video i have some spare wood and eye hooks. just need some more wire. call me crazy but i wont pay for something i can make myself. it doesnt matter how much money I have, I refuse.

I am planning on making a cutter for myself, and I am going to try to use guitar strings (since I keep hanging on to all my old ones). As long as they are all the same size string, it should work out.
Tips/tricks. You can use a good knife and baton(thats what its called) the knife instead of cutting with a saw. After all you only need a groove for the wire to sit in. You can also find Japanese pull saws that have a much thinner kerf than the saw you used. Bearclaw makes a fine crosscut with no set that would be ideal.

Awesome! I always try to make things myself, whether it works perfectly or not! It feels great to create something. I too refused to pay 2-300 for a soap cutter. Here in Canada with shipping it wnds up being closer to 4-500. I bought a $12 mitre box but my soap loaf is angled, it is actually a bread loaf so it didnt quite fit in, but I can turn the soap on it’s side and do it. I will definitely give this a try.

I purchased Bobs one wire cutter for soap. I actually get a lot of joy from cutting one bar at a time. That is my reward in the end. His one wire cutter is $80.00 and I will tell you it works so wonderful. He will make a special order for you as well. He states it takes weeks to get your cutter, however he had mine delivered to my door in a week. If you have a larger budget than me, than you can purchase his cutters with multiple wires. It may be a good idea to wear safety glasses when using. Like a guitar string the wire can snap and hit you in the face when your looking down while cutting. That being said. Bravo! Great job! 🌺
Yes I thought of that because I play guitar. Let me know how it works. I did change my wires to cheese cutting wire and it works wonderfully, nice and tight.
I think if you put a long pipe through the hooks the size of the hole it will prevent the screws from turning when you press on the soap. For the height of the surface for cutting the soap should be the height of the width of the 1×3. That's only my opinion. Good luck
I haven’t been able to hear the audio cause I’m at work but I am looking forward to doing this. I am a messy cutter and would love to have more precision in cutting the soaps.
I saw the prices and instantly said nope i will build my own. all i did was check out the demensions of soap box and designed my own. from that i was able to measure my cutter. $200 is insane.

I DRILLED SMALL HOLES FOR THE WIRE AND USED LITTLE BRASS BEADS THAT I HAD FROM A BRACELET THAT BROKE. KEEP UP YOUR GREAT WORK!!!!! GOD BLESS

Thanks for sharing! If you don't like the wire guides you could always cut them on the other side and move your squares to the cut side.

Awesome! I always try to make things myself, whether it works perfectly or not! It feels great to create something. I too refused to pay 2-300 for a soap cutter. Here in Canada with shipping it wnds up being closer to 4-500. I bought a $12 mitre box but my soap loaf is angled, it is actually a bread loaf so it didnt quite fit in, but I can turn the soap on it’s side and do it. I will definitely give this a try.

Washers and screws work, we tried jewlry wire the 19 stramd wire...were going to use the 49psi for main box multicutter were going to make.

I purchased Bobs one wire cutter for soap. I actually get a lot of joy from cutting one bar at a time. That is my reward in the end. His one wire cutter is $80.00 and I will tell you it works so wonderful. He will make a special order for you as well. He states it takes weeks to get your cutter, however he had mine delivered to my door in a week. If you have a larger budget than me, than you can purchase his cutters with multiple wires. It may be a good idea to wear safety glasses when using. Like a guitar string the wire can snap and hit you in the face when your looking down while cutting.

I think if you put a long pipe through the hooks the size of the hole it will prevent the screws from turning when you press on the soap. For the height of the surface for cutting the soap should be the height of the width of the 1×3. That's only my opinion. Good luck

just an idea for you at your notches cut straight lines about 1/4 inch deep so that the wire is recessed and when you cut it will go trough the soap
you would then need to put the soap on a raised piece of wood or something the same size of soap block
I haven’t been able to hear the audio cause I’m at work but I am looking forward to doing this. I am a messy cutter and would love to have more precision in cutting the soaps.

I wish I saw this video before I purchased my $200 loaf cutter from Bud.
I saw the prices and instantly said nope i will build my own. all i did was check out the demensions of soap box and designed my own. from that i was able to measure my cutter. $200 is insane.
