    J.None as Baritone
    Earl Elkins Jr. as Tenor 1
    Eli Jacobson as Tenor 2
    Geoff Castellucci as Bass
    and Layne Stein as vocal percussion and music arranger.

    • @Tryst46
      @Tryst46 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Of the three, I have to single out Voiceplay as being the theatrical one. They always do costume, make-up and scenery to do their videos, a full production with all the group getting into character as you can see in this song, not just a group singing a song. Voiceplay are performers, they're not just singers.
      Geoff does the same in his "solo" videos where he plays all the vocal parts, costume, make-up and scenery, the whole 9 yards.

    A voice coach who had the same reaction to that last note by Geoff Castalucci determined it was an E1. The beatboxer was also the arranger of this song, Layne Stein. Geoff, like Tim Foust, and Avi Kaplan all can do sub harmonics and smoothly move to a B tenor range in a single phrase. It's rare to have 3 basso profundos in popular music at the same time. They all know and like each other and even help one another on their ranges. The top tenor (high tenor), Earl Elkins, recently left the group so they are using guests to fill including E.J. Cardona from Voctave including 'Go the Distance'. But to hear Goeff harmonize with himself, the best is his cover of Tennessee Ernie Ford's '16 tons'. BRILLIANT!

  • @johndeeregreen4592
    @johndeeregreen4592 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    It's not always about Geoff's bass, but his voice just fits this so well. Geoff has a 5+ octave range. He has a low range in chest voice, but drops that range via subharmonics. The beatboxer is Layne Stein and he is a capable singer, too.

    Pretty much anything VoicePlay has put out recently is pure gold. Eleanor Rigby is stunning, and they're short one member in that arrangement- not that it impedes them even a little bit. Bang! is a super fun bop, featuring guest vocalist Deejay Young. Personally, I love the VoicePlay Cinematic Universe videos-- Trapped: Billie Eilish in 3 Minutes, and Panic! in 4 Minutes, parts 1 and 2. The Billie Eilish medley in particular is a masterful arrangement- it's more of a mashup than a medley, because of how they interweave multiple songs at the same time. Also, the video is creepy and amazing.

  • @DougRayPhillips
    @DougRayPhillips 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    VoicePlay is set up pretty much the same as PTX or Home Free. Two high voices, two low voices who can also go high, and a beatboxer who can occasionally lend an extra voice.
    Specifically, VoicePlay does a lot of Disney-type stuff, medleys, stuff with costumes and makeup and visual tricks and character voices, etc. But they can also just play it straight, wear street clothes, use their normal voices.
    First Tenor Earl Elkins Jr. left the group last year and hasn't been permanently replaced yet. So they've been using various guest artists (male or female) in that spot.
    Second Tenor is Eli Jacobson.
    Baritone is Jesse Nunn. He prefers to be called J.None.
    Bass is Geoff Castellucci. He also has a solo YT channel and does songs by multitracking his voice. And he puts up narrative pieces as well, including stuff by Edgar Allan Poe.
    Percussionist is Layne Stein. He can also sing, do stuff in French, and can play the violin. (Similar to Kevin Olusola occasionally playing the cello.)
    There are no instruments used in their vids, unless you see them.
    Good VoicePlay stuff includes:
    All 4 of their songs from Nightmare Before Christmas.
    Little Mermaid, Moana, and Frozen medleys.
    Boy Bands in 5 Minutes.
    You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch.
    Can't Help Falling in Love.
    Carry On, My Wayward Son.
    (not an exhaustive list)
    Geoff Solos:
    He has seven songs in the Uploads subfolder in his personal YT channel. All done within the last year. Mele Kalikimaka uses guest artists. The other six are just himself, multitracked. All of them are good.
    Don't go to his Music Videos subfolder. Despite its name, it has many of the same songs as in the Uploads subfolder but in audio-only versions. You want "Uploads" for full video impact.

  • @PiscesintheRain

    Great reaction! I'll admit, I love watching people hear Geoff hit that ending E1 - it's so shocking to hear that sound come from a human voice.
    As others have mentioned, Geoff Castellucci does have his own channel, and I'd really recommend his cover of Blackbird, as it does a great job showing off the extent of his range. He not only has those deep bass notes, but also a great upper extension.
    Also, I highly recommend checking out more of Voiceplay's music - I'd suggest Tennessee Whiskey, Queen in 5 Minutes, and their Little Mermaid Medley (Geoff does a fantastic Ursula in that one). Geoff and Layne Stein (the beatboxer) do most of the arranging for their music, and they do such a phenomenal job showcasing everyone's talents. This song was mostly Geoff, but Eli Jacobson (2nd tenor, shorter bald dude, name is pronounced "Ell-ee") has an amazing rock tenor and can do runs and riffs like nobody's business.

    Geoff Castellucci is one of the best out there! He does some stuff on his own as well, you should check out "The Headless Horseman" and "Sixteen Tons" covered by him, they're mind-blowing!
    And because I love watching your Pentatonix reactions, you've reacted to my favorites but their new release "90's Dance Medley" is so awesome, you should check it out. Also their live performance of "Hallelujah" that is on their channel is a must because it truly showcases that what they can do on their official videos, they can do live. Their Christmas stuff are some of my favorite ones too!

    I've been a bass/baritone for 40 years, With Geoffs videos I went from my lowest note (A1) to I can now hit the note at the end of this video, not really powerfully yet but I can hit that sumbich, thanks to Geoff and his videos on singing really low. I did what he said and my range went down into the basement . . . .

    From what I understand, Geoff Castellucci ranged from an E1 to a B4 in this song. To say that his range is amazing is an understatement 😊. Other Voiceplay songs that exhibit his bass and range would be "My Mother Told Me", and "HALO", and of course a great Xmas song that suits him perfectly is "You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch". Solo performances by Geoff Castellucci that also really exhibit his range (and bass) would be "16 Tons", "Monster Mash", "Blackbird", "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold (from the Hobbit)", and his latest song, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".

LOL! That definitely helped just a TINY bit!). Anyway, now i'm totally *HOOKED* on everything he's done that i've so far seen. Geoff's ending note is an E1 it is the 3rd key from the end of the piano and that is not as low as he can go, he has a 5 octave range. Santa is played by the basses brother-in-law. and you have to watch Geoff sing "Sixteen Tons".

Others of theirs I can recommend are 'This is Halloween,' (showcases more of the other members, especially tenors Eli and Earl,) 'Boy Bands in Five Minutes,' 'Queen in Five Minutes,' 'Mr Blue Sky' and a whole bunch of their Disney-themed covers.

    So, welcome to the VoicePlay train. You picked a good station to get on at, though to be completely honest, all of the stops are very nice. Yes, the bass singer, Geoff Castellucci is an amazing bassist, and he can actually hit sub-harmonic ranges. Heck, on their recent video of My Mother Told Me, even being very familiar with Geoff, he damn near killed me on his first big drop, because I wasn't expecting it when it hit. The truly dangerous thing with him is that he has a solo channel, where he will often layer himself four or five times to round out the arrangement. He will use instrumental accompaniment, and he does it very well. He's even done a collaboration on a Christmas song this last year. But if I had to suggest one entry point for his channel, it would be 16 Tons.
    However, as powerful as Geoff is, he doesn't dominate the group at all. Across their various songs, they all have moments to shine, and they really are spectacular. They are, without any question, my all-time favorite acapella group. No matter the song, they bring the passion and the energy, and they are unequivocally having a good time. Sadly, around this time last year, their high-end, Earl, left the group, and they are currently still in the phase of working with different featured guest singers. They did the same thing a few years ago when another member, Tony, left the group. The African American singer, J.None, was actually a featured singer on several songs before he was announced to be the new permanent fifth member of the group. Eventually, someone will take Earl's place as the new fifth member, and I trust them to pick someone who will really work well with the group.
    Now, the beatboxer is Layne Stein, and he really is phenomenal. He's even got his own solo channel, though it isn't as active as Geoff's. He does have several videos that he's done with his whole family for his youngest daughter's birthday, which is just... so heartwarming. And the last member, though certainly not the least, is Eli Jacobson, who is every bit as skilled and every bit as much fun to watch as the rest of the group. Heck, I love in their Queen in 5 min video, the character he's playing actually has a bit of a rivalry with the one that Geoff is playing, and it is just amazing.
    So, yes, I very much look forward to joining you on your journey with VoicePlay. I have no doubt at all that you will enjoy it immensely.

      @Drake844221 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though, given that you're a metal guy, have you come across Jonathan Young? Over the years, he's specialized in heavy metal and hard rock covers of songs... though, he's recently admitted that he views pretty much all of the ones that came before as clickbait. Still, I've enjoyed them a lot, and I'm looking forward to continuing on with him with his new focus on original works. Still, if you want an entry point for him, I might suggest his cover of Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, or his cover along with Caleb Hyles of The Bells of Notre Dame. Either way, he's got a lot of covers from all sorts of artists, _loads_ of Disney hard rock and heavy metal covers, and he absolutely kills it on villain songs. I mean, for heaven's sake, he actually makes In the Dark of the Night from Anastasia an intensely good song. Like, I love Christopher Lloyd, but there wasn't much to work with on that song in the original movie.

    The bass singer is Geoff Castellucci, He is a vocal monster. He can go higher than that and he can go lower than that. The percussionist is the guy who had the Rudolf glowing red nose. He is also the arranger. He rarely steps up into a speaking part. He's a freakin' genius obviously, Voiceplay's arrangements are so good. His name is Layne Stein. I don't remember off the top of my head the other two vocalists. When you were discussing your enjoyment of acapella groups you didn't mention Home Free . . . I just looked and you have discovered Home Free, I'm gonna watch that review next, Man of Constant Sorrow. I love that video . . . just subbed . . .

    I don't mean to take away anything from the other guys, b/c they're all amazing singers, but Geoff is the only guy who's not replaceable. Geoff has a 6 octave range, can sing Bass, full range subharmonics and growls all the way down to B0, THEN baritone and even up to 5 octave tenor. Having that range, especially those extreme low notes makes Geoff the 1 in 100 million, member. He's the golden goose of Voice Play.
    What a lot of people miss when reacting to this video is another extremely difficult talent. Singing is one thing, but changing your voice to do cartoonish voice impressions while not only singing but harmonizing with everyone else, is also incredibly talented. The way the other 4 guys did that so well is phenomenal. When I think about all the seemingly simple yet extremely complex difficulty and skill used throughout this video, and everything about the whole composition of it... it's probably one of the top 5 things I've ever seen on the internet. I had to rewatch it 100 times to realize how much absolute genius was in their video, and I'm still finding things I never noticed before.
