Onimai is genuinely one of my favourite anime of the season for all the positives you talked about, it's just the perfect level of wholesome that I absolutely adore.
I've been debating whether to watch this. Yes, it's wholesome, exploring themes of rediscovering life, and adapting to change. But, the very premise, makes me very much conflicted. Being trans, I don't usually see anime with any representation. Then I heard about this, and was curious. And part of me is interested. But the other part of me is absolutely livid, at the idea of a show, in which someone can simply forcibly change someone's gender. Because the amount of misery coming from gender dysphoria is something I'd only wish upon the most evil of people. And to make it worse, Mahiro seems to simply take it in stride, eventually. Simply adapting to that body, and becoming a girl. Something that feels beyond wrong, as it feels like it paints a picture of people simply being able to choose to be comfortable in their body, no matter what gender. In the end, I'm left conflicted, cus half of me really wants to watch it, and the other half despises its existence. It feels like a show that has a lot of good themes, but ended up making a mockery of trans people in the process. But I'm aware a lot of people feel differently, some theorizing Mahiro was closet trans, for instance.. Either way, watching this video, helped me not at all in deciding whether to watch it, but it was a well done video all the same.
