Privatisation by Stealth of Mallorca’s Beaches | SHOCKING prices here

  • In this video find out why I feel we are experiencing some privatisation by stealth of Mallorca's beaches.
I filmed this video in Cala Mayor, on the west side of Mallorca's capital Palma de Mallorca which is a popular beach with residents and holidaymakers alike.
But Summer in 2024 will be a very different experience for many locals with huge swathes of sand taken over by huge plastic sunbeds.
With less room on the sands, it will mean only those who can afford to go to the beach will be able to enjoy these smaller beaches this Summer.
It feels like locals are no longer welcome here
So join me and find the pricing and find out what my opinion is. Leave your opinion too.

This is awful I really feel for the residents. I would definitely not pay that. If we are at the beach all week we buy lilos from a local shop and a parasol and use those. We could never afford a weeks worth of two sunbeds. I live by the beach in Northern Ireland and we are lucky our beach is mostly quiet but it's only because it's always cold and rarely get good weather. I feel for the residents at the minute as we were in same predicament with renting and house sales. We could not afford to rent in either of our home towns also could not afford to buy there either. We were lucky that we were able to move to a church cottage at low rent and lived there for 10 years but house was condemned and we had to move. We were so lucky as we bought a house at a good price during lockdown in a coastal village but we could never afford to buy a house where we are now as lots of house being sold and made into holiday lets or being rented out at really high prices and house prices in what was a reasonable priced area are now a fortune. I hope the spainish government help the locals and do tourism in a responsible way and sort the beach bed situation out as a family could never afford those prices local or holiday maker. There should be space for everyone no class distinction.

Likewise, it’s put a huge damper on my upcoming honeymoon. I’m trying not to tell my fiancé as I don’t want to concern her, but I do want her to be prepared. I saw a video of British tourists run off the road, rammed into, and yelled at - so sad that there’s so much hatred being directed at tourists who have absolutely no control over the local policies. If I had more time I’d likely cancel my plans and book elsewhere; doesn’t seem worth the risk of us being targeted because we’re not locals. We live in Miami and can empathize with the pricing inflation (it’s actually far worse in Miami - the average rent for a 1bedroom apartment is over $2K/month), but we don’t direct hatred to tourists - what would be the point? What would that achieve?

  • @DavidT-Mallorca

The Nixe Palace is lovely, although don't forget the 'plastic'!😱
The Palacio de Maivent always seems like a National Trust place to me. Nice, but I was surprised to find out that the Spanish Royals actually still use it. It was used as a backdrop in that Michael Caine film, 'Deadfall', (I think that's when those photos were taken of Caine visiting Robert Graves in Deiá), and that film with the Irish actor Colm J. Meaney, who lives in Sóller.
Those sunbeds are shocking! The first time I came across that kind of thing was up in Formentor, the beach by the old, (now rebuilt), Formentor Hotel. The beach is fantastic, and I saw the straw parasols with the immaculate beds and the safe, and I thought, 'that's a great idea'! THEN I read the price! As you said, equivalent to accommodation.
It is indeed like being a (nasty) private part of the beach, although I'd imagine that the vast majority of tourists wouldn't be happy with that price either. In fact, the only tourists who would be OK with it, are the 'high end' German/Scandi tourists that the Consell de Mallorca wanted to replace the Brits with a few years ago.😂Although a quick trip down past TED Langton's old hotel in Arenal should confirm that not all German tourists are (so-called) 'high end'.🤣
That's one thing about the east coast. The beaches still have plenty of space where there are no sunbeds and people can just put a towel down on the sand.
It's a shame. None of this is down to the normal holidaymaker.

In fact, in America when one stays at a beach resort, the chairs are usually included in the price of the hotel! So, most Americans would NOT be looking to pay this ridiculous amount.
And, Americans who can afford to pay this amount are not looking to stay at a crowded beach. Americans with money like their space.

I think this is what Mallorca wants though. They are intentionally pricing ordinary people out, residents and tourists. I think they only want people with big money on the island, who can easily afford 70 euros for a sunbed. I think this is where it starts. Hotels, shops and restaurant prices are going up, and they can't really blame covid anymore.
They only want the richest people to visit the island who will pay whatever prices are asked. Ordinary holiday makers aren't wanted anymore.
This makes me so sad. I got married in Santa Eulalia church in Palma 7 years ago, but haven't been to visit for almost 5 years due to illness. With the price hikes in hotels and restaurants, I don't think I can afford to come back. And that is EXACTLY what Mallorca wants.

Locals can’t afford to buy houses as there’s more money in development of tourism.
I’d feel exactly the same if it was my home.
Property on the island is hoovered up by the rich for holiday let’s or second homes pricing anything way out of the price range for them.
Similar things are happening here in the uk Cornwall etc some Scottish islands.
I’m just back from Majorca and was made so welcome as tourism is the main employment on Majorca and the locals need tourism to survive ,but they need a managed sustainable tourism.

Well I believe Majorca is getting too big for its boots now and I really think over the next couple of years bars and restaurants will be struggling to make a living because once bitten twice shy tourists wont go back after they get stung, I have seen this happen years ago every bar seemed to be charging twice as much as normal one year, the following year we went back in August and stayed at the sol gaudalupe and it was dead, lucky if their was 20 people round the pool all day long, it was great for us but I felt so sorry for the bar owners.
I've been going to Magaluf/ Palma Nova since 1986 going at least twice a year but not this year, first time I'm going to miss the place I always call my second home. Prices at the resorts have pushed us older folk away now, I remember the good times at the end of September beginning of October The Piano bar's 5pm tradition, you struggled to get in the bar, infact people had to stand in the street it was a great atmosphere it never gets like that now.
I have booked two 1 week holidays in Benidorm and 11 nights in Tenerife this year, its really sad and I will miss the large group of friends I met up with every year in October whom all have said wont be going back this year.
The government in Majorca says they want to cut down on the rowdy binge drinking crowd and make these areas family friendly and fair enough because tbh I think the youngings now are not respectful as we were however what has actually happened is they have pushed the more mature tourists away, these are the people that go all year round and spend money off season not only this but now families cannot afford to go. I think the government have just got greedy and wanted more tourist tax and local taxes from food and drinks and this is the real reason for price surging.
If they truly wanted to make these places family friendly then surely the best way to achieve this would be to have the resorts bars and clubs shut the doors at 1am, the teens would hate that and go else where, keep the prices as they were so they are affordable to families and the older crowd all year round. I would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this.

      Very fair assessment.
I've been many times too. Its two fold. Firstly Maga was built for its purpose with the strip. They were quite happy to take the money. There are many places families could go could from that in peak season to avoid it. As you say off peak its perfectly agreeable their. Secondly it just reeks of the same old corruption. Germams Swedes French & Dutch are fleeing their countries in their droves because of what their countries are becoming. This is the crux of it. More elitism stopping every day folk from having their fun & enjoying themselves. Close the bar's & put a mosque there. See which they prefer. Given Majorca's history you would've thought theyd learned

Bottom line is that the local government must have allowed this to happen so despite all these protests (from local people) about the various issues with tourism the very people who should be listening arent. A good protest against this though is what you showed towards the end, let hundreds of locals turn up with their towels and beach stuff and plonk themselves in amongst all the beds and umbrellas causing anyone using them to feel very uneasy haha. I live in a coastal area here in Ireland myself and if one of our beaches got taken away from us so rich people could sunbathe there, I expect youd hear some chainsaws in the middle of the night and find some floating umbrellas by morning 😈

I visited Cyprus for the first time last year and it was 2.50 for a sunbed and 2.50 for the umbrella for the day so 5 euroes total. It also seemed to be governed, any beach that I went to the price for sunbeds and umbrellas were always the same. Absolute bargain, I used it daily. I also visited Mallorca last year for the first time and it was around 15 euroes for a sunbed and an umbrella, I used it once. I just refuse to pay those prices, IMO 15 euroes is dear, 70 euroes is absolutely ridiculous! You will get people who have more money than sense and use it but IMO this should be boycotted, I really feel for the locals. Also to put it into perspective, 70 euroes is a days wage for majority of the people so to be spending that just for a bit of comfort and shade is bonkers
