  • Zach really puts his bike through the paces! This is a 6 month review of his 2021 Trek Marlin 5. Mountain biking was new to us when we purchased this bike and it's become a big part of our lives. We have all progressed so much in a short amount of time and our bikes are getting a lot of use (and abuse).

    I tore up my crank fairly quickly, but I'm around 180lbs. I upgraded to a Box 3 1X9 and I love it. Also upgraded wheels so I could run 2.4 tubeless and put some good trail tires on it. Replaced the front fork with a cheap air fork. It's served me well. I've since bought a Polygon Siskiu T7 and made the Marlin my cross country bike.

    Great informational video! The marlin is a great platform to upgrade as you go along. I have a rockhopper which is a similar frame. I've upgraded as I've found the limits of each part. I have added a tapered 120mm air fork, converted to a 1X11 drive train and even switched over to tubeless. All of these upgrades are super easy and I am still below the price point of a higher tier bike like the Roscoe

    • @getstrongby4038
      @getstrongby4038 ปีที่แล้ว

      The marlin is actually not good for upgrading
      It doesn't allow tapered forks, if you want to upgrade drivetrain the highest you can go is Sram nx or you need to buy a new wheelset
      I bought the marlin 8, it's pretty much as upgraded as you can go

    Must be nice being a kid in 2022 and having a dad spend $700 on them for a bike x 2. When I was a kid I was lucky to get a Kmart fake BMX and then a toys r us/kmart no name mtb w/ 24" tires with hub covers and no shocks (in the late 80s early 90s they werent a thing)
    Thing was I ran that thing on jumps in the woods and all over town and was non the wiser that better bikes existed. When I had kids they got the same kinda thing. As kids tend to jot take care of stuff, especially if it's not earned.
    Regardless of my musing about kids getting top of the line today, at least we see the bike held up so thanks for the video. Looking between this and a dual sport 2 and can't decide.

    I got my girl a Marlin 5 as well and the first thing to go was the front derailleur (we live in Florida) and moved to a Shimano ZEE 1x10 rear derailleur ($65) with a 11-42 cassette. Also removing the forged 3x front cranks and putting on some shimano zee 104 cranks and a raceface 32 sprocket and this things rips!!! last two things to change out will be moving to an air fork in the front and a dropper seat post as she's getting more into jumps. Any of those would work. A few years ago I was going through a weight loss journey and it just came down to consistency. So whatever bike you get, as long as you're on it, raising your heart rate and doing it 3-5 times a week if that's your primary means of exercise, then you'll get the results you want. But more importantly, eating the right foods and at the right amounts is even more important. Exercise is immediately cancelled out by eating bad foods. And even if you're eating good foods, if you eat too much of it, you're still not going to be at the caloric deficit you need. Hope you don't mind my 2 cents :)
