    Wow, you just argued that one of the most popular films of all time actually had a negative effect on the history of cinema. That takes balls (or whatever your species equivalent is) and I respect you for it.
    Also, just to point out: it's not that unbelievable that in a totalitarian society someone as young as Luke would be ignorant of events just two decades earlier. I don't know much about the expanded universe, even going by the films it seems obvious that the Empire hates the Jedai enough to not allow mention of them anywhere under their control.

      He does that often. Even some of the best stuff he'll find some sarcastic spin on it to make it seem as if That's what caused our extinction. It's hilarious. And I think Star Wars fans are smart enough to know that he's being sarcastic. Well... At least I hope so. Wormuloid I hear is pretty scary with the new lightsaber that just came out. Wouldn't want anymore amputations.

      Barry Gormley That Star Wars (and Jaws) changed t how Hollywood works, to the detriment of film quality, is not a unique argument. Before then the studios would give money to directors and make money on the movies that worked, like the Godfather and Raging Bull and Midnight Cowboy. In the late seventies, because of the success of big films like Star Wars, the emphasis shifted to big formulaic blockbusters.
      Popularity is not an indication of quality. McDonald's is the most popular restaurant in the country. Bud Light is the most popular beer.

      1. If Episode 7 just came out a week ago, then either humanity gets destroyed (these videos are supposedly about analyzing artifacts from a dead civilization) before the release of Episode 7 or Episode 7 gets pushed back so far that humanity is destroyed before it is released.
      2. If it's an episode beyond 7 then somebody went nuts franchising Star Wars and new movies are still being released after humanity's destruction.

      +|Jake|C| The bit that came straight after, about film merchandising, is pretty much spot on. I believe Star Wars is credited with the start of excessive branding of film. Can't say if it will be our end though (give it a few years).

      It is funny that, way back in 1983, George Lucas said in an interview that "A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing."
      Ah, those were different times, when movies had things rarely seen nowadays like; intriguing plots, carefully crafted stories, and great acting.
      Now, thanks to the unheeded words of George Lucas, (even by himself), and the massive profits from movies by Michael "Boom Boom" Bay, pretty boring things are all we have left.
      "All of which led to the extinction of the human race."
      Prophetic words indeed.

      As James Carville might say, "It's the economy, stupid!" Society as a whole went through a massive shift, abandoning the progressive politics of the past 40 years in exchange for neoliberal austerity. I am unsure if this was all sparked by economic uncertainty...I have seen others suggest racial tensions played a factor (white people were sick of the advancements in rights blacks and other minorities had been gaining...and then those uppity women thought they should get in on the action, too), but it's no surprise that a big cultural shift would come along with this political shift.

    Nothing saddens me more about Star Wars than the realization that millions of innocent technicians, engineers, and pilots who were simply trying to make do in an awful world (like Luke would have by joining The Academy) were destroyed in the rebellion (then again in the last movie but with more construction workers added in). Not all of them were evil sith lords, dictators, and..bad people. Some might just be the guys who pushed all those buttons that lit up but did nothing.

      Sure and the new era of films ushered out good filmmaking as stated in the video. I just equated ushering with ruining.

    • @theeNappy
      @theeNappy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It's oversimplifying to say that movies were ruined after Star Wars, or that there weren't bad movies made before Star Wars. True, Star Wars lead to an increasing era of movies as business ventures over art projects, but it isn't really Star Wars' fault that other producers tried to bottle that lightning, and even a profit-minded movie can be high art (think the Inception, especially in regards to a Shared Spectical). *They did not stop making good movies after 1977.* Besides, having a simple narrative or a lot of special effects doesn't make a movie bad, making a bad movie makes a movie bad.

    • @priitsan
      @priitsan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ofcourse it's oversimplifying. And you're right. Saying movies were ruined after Star Wars is strictly from the point of view that the pre-SW way of making movies was better in some way. And something was lost after that.

      I see. If it's your own opinion and judgement, then I respect it (as long as you didn't like that disgrace for a movie named SW: ANH reboot, oh, TFA :P)
      To me, the prequels were essential. The OT was too dull and the special effects were too tacky (considering it's as old as that). The prequels not only had better CGI, but actually expanded the SW universe beyond the small realm of just 3-4 lead characters and converted it to a full fledged universe of it's own. The breathtaking visuals of different planets and the battles gave a feeling of grandeur. It showed the time when the Jedi order were at their prime of power and what's more, had much better lightsaber duels and some of the best OST the franchise ever had to offer. It showed us how the Sith came to power and how Anakin got curropted to join the dark side.
      The only thing that was poor about the prequels was the dialogue but apart from that, they were 10/10. Brought so many memorable things to the SW universe - Darth Maul, Duel of the Fates, Qui Gon, set the perfect stage for the possible rise of Darth Plagueis in Ep VII, the clones, the Jedi masters Windu and all.
      Imho, you just can't enjoy like 30% of the SW cinematic universe, the rest of the 60% (bar TFA) is essential too

    • @SemiProFilmShow
      @SemiProFilmShow 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i like TFA for one reason. IT STILL FELT LIKE STAR WARS the story in the preqels was weak and boring. the CGI in the first two doesn't hold up as well as the effects in the originals (not the special editions) and to me it just seems like they didnt care. I watched the preqels much after i saw the originals and just kept wondering why it felt so much different and quite frankly wrong.

    2:14 Which is a complete misrepresentation of Taoism and a misunderstanding of what the taijitu (the symbol often incorrectly referred to as a "yin-yang" when yin and yang are what it represents, not the symbol's name) represents. The white half, yang, represents concepts like light, day, order (which can be oppressive), and sensory-focused masculine energy, whereas the black half, yin, represents concepts like dark, night, chaos (which can be liberating), and intuitive feminine energy. So the factions have their color schemes reversed since the bad guys represents "order" (in the form of oppression). Granted, the Jedi also represented "order" in their time.
    2:53 Order? Chaos? What's the difference? If "order" is oppression, give me "chaos" any day. Case in point: 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and 'Demolition Man'.
    2:24 Ackchyually, the OG Stormtroopers date back to WW1 and weren't necessarily "bad guys" (though there were no "good guys" in WW1). Hitler's Stormtroopers named themselves after the OG ones, hence the modern perception of the term (relative to the current Earth year).
    3:52 Vader has a yang-centric personality and belief system, so his wearing black is definitely NOT symbolic of yin.
    3:58 All the "good guys" have personalities and belief systems that are relatively balanced between yin and yang.
    4:00 Han's personality and belief system are yang-centric, but in a Chaotic Neutral sort of way instead of Lawful Evil. Of course, he evolves into Chaotic Good.

    Dutch, not German. But the Vader - Father connection wasn't planned until after the 1st movie, it is a retcon that Lucas now insists was his idea all along, but it's clear from basically every other source that he just thought it was a cool villainous sounding name, abbreviated from INvader (just like Darth Sidious was abbreviated from Insidious), and Darth was a name, not a title at first.

      +Jakob Snowthecrow are you asking me why "Dark Insidious" named a "Dark Invader" ?
      Go outside for answers. George "Zim-Zam" Lucas put no thought into his movies. Just passive-aggressive apathy, hate against rock music and implied racism.
      The bible goes into depth about the "Witch of Endor" (of Samuel, chapter 28:3-25) and the "THX 1137" (of Judges 11:37) where she wanders the desert before perishing as a abortion demanded by her deity.

    It's funny how we read so much into these movies and their meaning, but I wonder sometimes if the people who make them even realize what they were doing. Do we give too much credit to the creators of these films? Like the part about the use of color, it seems brilliant but did the creators have that intention or was it just because it looked cool. I dunno I have a hard time believing people are that smart or even care that much to include those details.I feel like sometimes we give them way to much credit but that's just me.

    • @ultrawarriorwookie
      @ultrawarriorwookie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sometimes think that too. Thats why english class, in my eyes, is such bullshit. you analyse shakespears lines down to the word and people make him out to be such a deep, complex writer whereas he might have just thought "this is a dope line to include". However, i think in recent years when film making has become more of an art form, in film school and places like that, film makers are encouraged to think and plan out shots to enhance the mood using lighting or colour or stuff like that.
