The sanskrit word "mridanga" is derived from "mrid" (clay) and "anga" (limb). It means "limb of clay." Technically, then, any clay-bodied drum could be called a mridanga. However, in Bengal, the original word for the khol has always been "mridanga," and the south Indian drum is often differentiated by calling it a "mridangam" (note the 'm' at the end).
Yes, there is a big difference between the two. A pakhawaj is much larger and played very differently (more classical fashion). It is probably much harder to learn pakhawaj because (1) there are very few people who can teach you and (2) because it's just generally more complex.
@merupu2erupu I think the difference is in the material. The southern mridanga are made from the trunk of the jackfruit tree which gives it a hollow wooden sound. The ISKCON ones originally were from eastern India, and are made of baked clay giving it more sharp sound. I got the fiberglass body one and would give it the lowest rating for sound quality.
Am I the only one who notices the incredible similarity between Abhijit Prabhu in these videos and Namarasa from the Namarasa Podcast? There must be something behind that, I wonder...
Prabhu first i wanna thank you. And Prabhu can you please do a kartal lesson series too? It'll be very helpful! Didn't find a proper kartal lesson on the net. I've started to learn mridanga from your videos. Prabhu a lot of thanks to you for these lessons! May Govinda bless you always.
@FrankMustaine Yes, both heads should have many fine cracks running through them. Actually, the higher the density of cracks (the smaller they are), the better it will sound.
Hare Krishna! Thank You so much for this lesson! I am totally new to mrdanga and this will help me understand more. I just curious how to add in the mantra when playing, what I meant is when suppose we should sing when play this tune. Once again THANK YOU, please make more!
Hare Krishna prabhu. I was watching one of madhava prabhu's mrdanga videos and came across one in which he says a short mantra before playing the mrdanga. i could not quite catch what he was saying and was wondering if you knew it? your reply would be much appreciated. ys.
Hare Krishna prabhu ji dandvat pranam I really need your help. I have a Balram Mridanga but the Sliding Ghe sound not works, i mean to say "Gin taal" (woomp sound) and duggi doesn't work in my mridanga.
hello abhijit, thanks for your lessons. I´m from argentina. I bhought a new mridanga (equal to yours-made in india) I wanted to know if it´s normal that the surface of the left head (the bigger one) has like many thin lines crossing each other (ressembling like earth in which rain didn´t came on it for too long, and begins to brake in peaces) it isn´t broken, but it has those similar lines all over. thank you for reading.
is there a midi patch for Karnatik music (all instruments, including percussion) cuz both my mridangams broke . my claws get tired playing mridangam and tabla? i can't afford food so I have to perform on the street for money. (in my language (Thamil) it's called taking pichè (edithing pichè)) i think it means collecting rags in English.
Hi, I am looking at purchasing a mridanga and was curious to know what differences it makes as to if I purchase a fiberglass or clay one, your video is wonderful, thank you for the inspiration!
Hi, don't see any new post on Mridanga from Abhijit. Do you have a new you tube channel. Have been going through your lessons but the latest one is 9 years back.
Hi Harijitji, Just to clarify, is there a difference between a mrdangam and a pakhawaj? and what are the differences? Are they played in a similar fashion?
Actually, this instrument is called a Khol. Mridanga or Mridangam is a carnatic instrument. A Khol is a bengali folk instrument brought by srila Prabhupadaji since he and Chaitanya Prabhu were Bengali.
Hari Bol Prabhu. All glories to Guru-Gauranga. I would love to learn to play mrdanga but I'm not sure if we ladies are allowed to do so. Please can you tell me as I want to buy one and start learning
@@abhijitb1 that's enlightening... Sorry bro.. my bad. In our side mrudangam is something different. The right side is bigger in diameter and the sound is entirely different.. anyway.. thanks for the info
mridanga and mridangam are two separate instruments. The instrument he is playing is the mrdanga, and yes, it is also called khol or Sri Khol. The south indian mridangam was originally based off of the bengali mrdanga, the source of the word originally meaning clay body (mrid-earthen, anga-body) but the south indian drum later moved to being made of wood but still kept the name. So if you really want to get technical, the instrument Abhijit prabhu is playing is the original mrdanga.

Mridangas and Dholaks sound different. Also, the dholak's heads have larger sizes than mridangas, and they have no gab (black stuff) on them.

How many hours should one practice the first rhythm in this first video before moving to the next one?

go to a temple and buy one there ask them and buy one
Rekha Choonilal
Nandini Villeneuve you spelt the instrument wrong
@Gauraonline I did not have Bablu as a teacher, if that is what you mean...
I think there are so many difference between south Indian and North Indian stroke styles.
While I'm sure that a few people offer lessons in these instruments, I don't know anyone personally.
Hare Krishna Prabhu,
It's "ta khe ta khe ghe" or "ta khe ta ghe ghe" ?
The 2nd one.
