This is my daily Mantra.
Has anyone else noticed how all these environmentally friendly life-style changes that have become more popular seem to be more female-centred? It might just be me but I haven't seen a single male influencer talk about ethical shopping or zero-waste or reducing carbon footprints. I feel like the pressure of society to live green is rising, but more for women than for men? Just something I've been thinking about lately. I'd love to see some more men take part in these types of challenges.
You should check out Ronald Bank's page, a young black male I just started watching recently.on you tube who is a minimalist. That is even more of a rarity, a young black man caring about the environment.

@@SunnyDaysRComing I've seen that zero waste wedding video. Ironically they wasted too much gas (bad for the air/planet because of pollution) and wasted perfectly good food (any food they returned to the store had to be wrote off as unsellable/damaged for health code reasons).
I read something once that said that men are also likely to do these things...they just aren't talking about it as openly or frequently as women are on social media etc. That made complete sense to me.
There men out there that are trying to live green but it's just not as vocal.

I’ve been zero waste for 5 years.. my groceries with my partner is $50/week. We maybe buy one plastic packaged item a week. I didn’t live in a major city for the first 4 years of my zero waste journey. Everyone starts somewhere. You’ll get there

Itz_ Tyraa Hey! I started with buying all of my produce without those little baggies and just washing it when I got home, because you have to do that anyway. For drinking alcohol I went to local breweries that fill growlers that you can wash out and reuse. I also just started cooking a lot more. If you don’t have access to a bulk store even buying your ingredients in bulk is better. (Ex. Buying the ingredients to make hummus and making it at home will have less waste that buying hummus every week). Also just getting familiar with your local recycling program does wonders. :)

Do Americans not take lunch to work? Zero waste lunches are simple taking them from home.
From my experience (I know a few people who live or work in NYC) It's seen as easier to just buy lunch so that you don't have to carry around as much. & with their sometimes crazy work scheduled (If communicating into the city) they leave their home around 5 am & don't get home till after 7 pm. Food prep from what I have read recommends that you only prep food(full meals) for only 3 days ahead (Sundays cooking will only get you to Wednesday unless you do freezer meals too like chili or soups that can last longer).
It's easy for people go get into this all or nothing mentality when working & commuting rather then meal prep for the first half of the week then do take out with your own containers after. Tired people are easily influenced to just get takeout & not care. They then never learn how to cook & the cycle becomes even harder to break. I've seen videos about take out culture in China & how city working people will order just a cup of coffee to be brought to their apartments or will use the service to order food from a restaurant on the ground floor of their own building!
I bring my lunch to work every day, so it's not that americans don't do this.
This American does and has for the majority of the past 20 years.
America is big on convenience. If it's more convenient to buy your lunch, most people will. A lot of people still pack their food because it's cheaper and/or it's healthier.
I think its just more convenient for people to not have to carry around all that stuff and since they're in NYC its super easy to just get takeout. I bring my own lunches to school because I'd rather not wait on the lunch line and throw out single use trays and plastic cutlery everyday
People who work retail! Ask your customers if they would like a bag if they have a small item.. I save about 80 bags a day just by asking. Not everyone says yes, but they almost always do and I celebrate it and say “awesome! Saving the environment!” And the amount of conversations I have about people who really want to do better is amazing. Everyone can make a difference if everyone gets on board :)

I live in The Netherlands and work in retail. Free plastic bags were banned by law two years ago, so they have to buy one or bring one from home. Its absolutsly amazing to see how much plastic waste has been reduced by this law! Everyone is used to having a reusable grocery bag in their car, handbag or bicycle bags.
Same! I also let the ones that do want bags know that we have several types of bags (small paper ones that are mostly used to put wine bottles in, reuseable full size shopping bags, reuseable wine bags that hold 6 bottles, plastic huge paper bags, etc). We actually have some free full size reuseable bags too.

@@Framlii yes, its really frustrating. I have reusable bags but in the large retailers I could only pack about 10% of my fruit and veg without plastic. What's even weirder, biological alternatives are even more often wrapped in mandatory plastic.

harrisnutter • somewhat. I’ve seen a lot of people have containers for weeks on end that never they never take home. I rarely see personal utensils at work but I’ll see plates or bowls/cups. Many prefer convenience over reusability.
Always good to do positive reinforcement for people who only just started! Let them be proud. Gets more people into it.
At least one or more of my coworkers fuss pretty much on daily basis because there are no utensils, plates, condiments, cups, or whatever else in the breakroom. I feel like I'm in the minority to bring a full healthy meal with utensils, a water bottle, and a reuseable cup.

Kayla Waters • many don’t care. Some jobs supply those paper products (petty cash) or someone always buys them for the office. I prefer to bring my own but others just depend on the office to get those items. A lot don’t want to create new dishes from work or have to clean it up when it’s easy to throw it away. In general, we all want convenience.

Might not be the season for it or might not have one near them. I don't have one near me, the closest one is over am hour away

I guess it depends on areas. I'm lucky there is a couple of farmers markets year round close to me plus I work at a natural foods store with over 300 bulk products. I'm in a suburban area.
The girl in the middle complained about driving 15 minutes to the grocery store that sells in bulk. Do you think a person like that makes it to the farmer's market?

I can give some Zero waste tips for Modern convenience happy family’s
•Baking soda and vinegar as cleaner
•baking soda, water and peppermint essential oil as mouth wash
•baking soda and peppermint essential oil as tooth paste
•bring your silverware from home instead of take out plastic ones
•bring your own reusable straw
•fact: zero waste almost forces you to eat more healthy so you don’t make waste
•buy a Brita water filter instead of plastic bottles
•buy pre loved clothes so you don’t contribute to waste
• try compostable or reusable napkins
•call around to see local bulk stores and they’re sales
•farmers markets are really cheap (around me at least) so try shopping there
•bring your own bag
•try walking instead of driving
•bring your own take out container
•bring your water bottle
•bring your own snacks
•really think if you need it, or just want it.

Brita water filter is actually bad for your health because of the silver nitrate in it
Just so you know vinegar+baking soda= saltwater + energy. It can be great for cleaning if you're using the reaction, but if its premixed in a bottle it makes it less effective. Just soak your citrus scraps in vinegar for 2 weeks for a scent boost and bad odor removal properties.
Great tips :) just be careful with always using baking soda with brushing since it can wear down enamel over time.
@@rocsiali4092 also basically the whole benefit of toothpaste is the fluoride! Toothpaste isn't teeth soap like a lot of people seem to think haha.
use EXTREME caution putting any essential oils in your mouth plz! ingesting even one drop can cause serious side effects especially with peppermint oil

It would be really interesting to do this with people with disabilities/chronic illnesses as there as some barriers to zero waste there that are more unique to having that life situation (at least for me personally, and for some friends of mine with disabilities) and it could be cool to look at zero waste from that point of view.
I have chronic back pain and I'm losing dexterity in my hands. The only obstacle I face with zero waste stuff is trying to not drop my cane when I'm filling my jars 😂
Yes! We all do the best we can, and this movement needs more compassion about that. Medical needs come first, no guilt necessary!!!

@@crueltyfreecruella Me as well, but I do run into barriers and that's why I thought it would be interesting if there was a focus on zero waste when you have limitations/hurdles other people don't have to consider. Like for me I have issues with my arms that make me dependent on other people, so I can't always choose plastic-free packaging, etc as they're the ones making a lot of the food decisions. Though I rarely go out to eat or get takeout so I'm probably using less waste there lol. I just wish you could do things like get prescriptions in glass bottles or return your prescription bottles to be recycled/etc which are things a lot of people don't have to consider.
I have chronic illness and for a long time felt horrible about all my medical waste when changing my chest tube. Everything is sterile plastic inside other plastic. You have to wear gloves and mask up too. The stuff comes in a kit used for many things so you have extra bits that you just toss out every week.
Recently I saw a Zero Waster say "it's not about being zero waste, that's not possible as a human in today's society, we all just need to reduce as much as we can. Many people making less will make the biggest impact."
I stopped feeling bad and made the reductions I had the control over. I thrift, buy less to start. I've carried my own bags for more that 10 year, I've gifted all my family and friends reusable bags too, after 5 years most have started to use them on a somewhat regular basis (the hardest thing is to remember you have them before the cashier starts baging). My teans will carry 2-3 items without a bag if they forget their reusable. We all have a thermos, reusable straws and reusable cutlery in our bags/cars. Many people trying to use less.
But I will never fault someone with chronic illness for not being zero waste as they are already fighting for their life without carrying the weight of my judgement or a backpack full of reusable items.

Legumes - beans and lentils plus rice are a complete protein.
Beans, winter squash, and corn - complete protein
Garbanzo and sesame seed - hummus - is a complete protein
Soybeans, quinoa are individually almost complete proteins.

Just posted this on another comment, but lots of stuff gets edited out in these videos. Keep in mind it’s a week long experiment that gets condensed to 12 minutes. I also talked about beans and rice and vegetables, but it was impossible to get salad lettuce cause all the heads are in plastic wrapping. Don’t have to comment and hate, it just was a fun experiment to see what I could take away from it :)
I was also stunned by this. Meat is also protein. Just buy it at the butcher’s - no plastic packaging if you bring yours or some pack it in paper here (Poland).

Why cant the chick who used a cotton ball to remove her makeup just use a washcloth? If shes worried about bacterial, she can just use a new one each day and wash then at the end of the week
Because she doesn't think or research - she also thought the only sources of protein were peanut butter.
I haven't used a cotton ball or makeup wipe in like a year... Makeup Erase/Erase Your Face cloths are amazing!

I dont use any and i recommend it so much. I use mix of oils ( dont use coconut! It is way to heavy) and remove makeup with oil. It is great for eyelashes and eyebrows because it helps them grow. And not only it helps them grow, less eyelashes are falling out by removing mascara
I never used a cotton-thingy in my life to remove makeup.... We never had anything like that at home. Same with paper towels. So it's all a mystery to me why everyone uses those things... Lucky me :D

I love that this video includes composting! I feel like so many people stop at reusable bags, water bottles, and straws. I also LOVE that the one woman said that the best option is to USE WHAT YOU HAVE first before replacing everything with eco-friendly alternatives. It is a bummer that they didn’t have access to farmers markets for more of their groceries. Good job, ladies! Keep it up 👍🏻
SO CORRECT at the point of “why are they laughing at me?” That’s how feel every day with all the things I do to try and be more sustainable. It’s just a sign of ignorance when someone wants to judge you from afar without any knowledge.

Honestly, it does require a lot of research. It also is a lot of work. Because we are trying to change the ways we have become complacent with because they are convenient. To go zero waste fully you are literally going against the norm and against big companies. There is nothing convenient about this. I think that’s the first thing people need to realize. Of course it will become easier to manage and not such a huge change once you have adapted your life towards zero waste. It’s something you have to really want to do, and we all should. America is going to probably be the last industrialized country to ban single use plastics. Which is really sad because we are the largest contributor to trash. Also people still think recycling is a thing in the US. Everything currently, including your recycling is going to the landfill/ending up in the ocean. Choose sustainability over convenience.

That's interesting that she said it was more expensive bc ever since I've gone plastic-free, I spend waaaaay less on groceries (mostly since I don't eat meat anymore)
Yep my husband and I spend about 50 bucks a week on groceries and we get a lot of veggies and fruits.
I think its because they've just started. most people only know think about wholefoods when they think of "zero waste grocery shopping". over time, they will find out about other places to shop zero waste. another thing is, I feel like initially you'd have to spend a lot more money (ie, buy a reusable bottle if u don't have one, reusable produce bags, etc etc) but you end up spending less in the long run
also when trying to reduce waste, just because a company uses biodegradable and compostable packaging, doesn’t make it any better! always try to bring your own cup/container.
also, biodegradable doesn’t mean good! it just means it’ll degrade faster than plastic, but it can still release toxins into the environment and take years to ‘disappear’
same goes for compostable, some packaging has to be composted by a company, and others can be thrown into your compost bin
I always get annoyed when people laugh at you for asking for no straw. Honestly what is wrong with drinking it without it! and I always try to bring with my metal one so.
lol same. I get a lot of confused looks too when I ask for no straw and a lot of the time the person will ask "are you sure?" I think that having your metal straw out in your hand while asking for no straw will deflect some of the confusion though.
We need to keep asking for zero waste solutions.

You can get meat from your grocery stores deli (I shop at Kroger), just ask them for the cuts you want and ask to wrap in paper. Or a local butcher shop will do this too! It’s a lot easier if you buy whole foods. Lots of places have the option of milk in glass bottles that you can return when finished, and you can easily make your own butter, etc.
I got my metal straws and silicone lunch boxes over 15 years ago and still going strong! being plant-based for me has made me aware of my movements.
Please do a more extensive video on the diy compost bins that was made in this video!
Sophia Jun I made a homemade compost bin similar to the one the girl had in the video! It’s a 18gallon storage bin with holes drilled into it! She only had them in the lid, but I did it all throughout to increase air-flow! Super easy!!

hi-yes, I did research. Deli meat that came in slices in NYC was about $15 a pound, which was maybe 4-5 days worth of lunch meat for me. It was cheaper to buy lots of bulk beans and peanut butter. Lettuce was all in plastic wrapping, so most of my greens for protein were cucumbers and zucchini, but it still wasn’t the amount of protein I was used to. Lots of stuff gets edited out, don’t only believe 12 minutes of a week long experiment! :)

Some whole foods don't allow you to bring your own containers. My local one doesn't. Kinda sucks. But every whole foods could have different rules though. But that peanut butter is so good too!
I buy teddy natural peanut butter that's in a glass jar and i've kept 2 so far for things like soup broth, fermenting apples for vinegar, etc. They're recyclable too obviously

One thing that is absolutely AMAZING about buying in bulk that no one ever touches on is that you BUY WHAT YOU NEED! If I don't need 10 pounds of rice I can buy one pound. It's great. EVERY Whole Foods has a Bulk Bin section and you can use jars, but I just transfer to jars from canvas bags because then they don't have to tare (subtract weight of container from price) the jar. Not a lot of cashiers know how to do it, it just is faster and sometimes more courteous IMO (I have waited 5 minutes to finish check out with only a few bulk items with people waiting behind me.) It helps take off the nerves when you are starting out Zero (or minimal) waste that no one is staring at you or something for using jars.
No it is easier in the country because we live off the land. We already have limited waste. No fastfood and unnecessary purchases
One way I have cut down on plastic is by buying instant coffee in a glass jar and using one of the reusable k pods and then I reuse the glass container😊 not much but hey it's a start for me
I use a bamboo toothbrush and I love how softer the bristles feel and more gentle and light the bamboo feels in my mouth compared to a plastic toothbrush 😊

I loved this! I think it's really refreshing to see a zero waste attempt video that doesn't harp on how expensive it is to replace all your stuff with cute reusable versions (which isn't really zero waste), or shop a expensive bulk stores. I really feel like this highlighted that even if that isn't accessible for you to spend a lot of money you can still make an impact on zero waste by being mindful of what you're consuming and making doable low cost changes.
Using a plastic bottle as the zero waste trash bottle is counter intuitive because now that plastic bottle can not be recycled because the center will consider the extra trash inside as a contaminate and it will not get recycled. They will not remove it for you. That’s one reason why you see people using glass as their trash jars. Just a tip for anyone who didn’t know that and saw what she did a good example. She didn’t know either so no hate towards her.

That’s ok! The best way to be low waste is to fight against consumerism and reduce consumption, which can happen anywhere 😁 I’m in a more rural area in the South as well so I’m in the same boat.
I'm going to suggest (as a fellow Southerner) online ordering. Or I''m not sure how far you live from stores but just about everywhere there's a Wal Mart or dollar store that sells things pretty cheaply like water bottles, cups, cheap reuseable bags, cheap containers, cheap utensils. They're just as useful as any expensive options if you take care of them and keep them clean of course.
Your city doesnt have a farmers market? I live in a rural town in Texas and we have a farmers market every weekend.
actually learnt today that plastic is often needed sometimes to keep certain products fresh and eatable. the worst waste is actually food waste so I think it’s so easy to assume that plastic is the biggest problem when in some cases needed to make sure we don’t create even more waste.. honestly so interesting, definitely recommend looking it up:)

Zero waste doesn't have to be so expensive - look at your local farmer's markets! The produce there is almost always in zero packaging and local. My farmer's market also has eggs, honey, and some fish and meat. The only downside is that it doesn't run in the winter.

I know the grocery part of zero waste turns a lot of people away but even changing other parts of your lifestyle can be a really wonderful first step. Plus, it is a really good idea to contact your local stores and inform them about the zero waste movement and how they can cater to it. Produce sales, for example, tend to raise when they are naked instead of in packaging
I like how that delivery service gives you bags and fruit bags with them, so it can be reusable.
But if they do that everytime, it's horrible!

i work at a fastfood liek restaurant and a good amount of stuff is put in plastic. Where i have the option to swap something out (a paper plate for a actual plate, etc) i do so. I also noticed that people bearly use the napkins so i stoped giving them.
When people order drinks i ask if they want anything and make sure to always offer a glass
This is true. Even before I was trying to minimalize my waste I didn't really use the plastic utensils, napkins, tons of sauces, etc, I was given. Now I tell workers not to give me all of that stuff and I usually have my own (clean, washed) cup to put my drink or water in so I won't have to use a plastic cup.
Also lentil/pea pastas have good protein and are sometimes in bulk
Yeah if restaurants stopped handing everyone straws right when they get a drink it would help alot, they make foldable containers that could fit into most purses if your going out to eat instead of a foam takeout box
Getting protein is really easy! You just bring your own Tupperware and ask them to put the meat in your container and they put the deli sticker on your container! I hope this helps!

Something I think is cool, and unfortunately I forget the name at the moment, is how theres some people who use plastic and glass bottles as building material (like for the walls). Its like terra buildings or something? But anyways, point is they accept donations, but you gotta fill/pack the bottles full before you can send them. So it also helps cut down on other plastic waste.
Plus the fact plastic doesn’t degrade for so so very long, and the way they get covered in natural materials during the building process means the buildings last for a really long time and keep so much outta land fills.
I started bringing my own food container so that I can take any left overs home. My cousin hates it, even though the waiters and everyone are impressed. I always take my own utensils, cup, and straw as well

I work at a nursing home and while I’m not aware AT ALL about stuff like this I also realize how much waste we make in the nursing home. Every single time you go into a room and do care on a patient you wear gloves which is understandable BUT you also put dirty clothes in a bag and put that in another trash bag for laundry, you put the dirty “ underwear” in a bag and put it in another bag to go to the dumpster.. water cups here are styrofoam and you throw them away every single night and replace them.. we have around 80 residents in the facility.. a whole lotta wastefulness.. so that made me SUPER aware of how wasteful it is, the cup thing.. along with everything else. Wish they’re was a way to help that but unfortunately i don’t have much say :/ which I know isn’t the right way to go about it but unfortunately that’s my reality.
something important to remember when changing your lifestyle, it shouldn’t be to make you feel better or to give you comfort. it’s important to spread the word and lesson your own carbon footprint for the world.

27 and been trying my best to live low waste (at least) for 2+ years now! I feel so much lighter honestly.
I find buying in bulk to be so much cheaper! I can fill my jars and spend $10-$20 with 5 or 6 jars of stuff. Plus my local bulk store usually has coupons around to encourage bringing your own containers and reusable bags. They're amazing to deal with. We have had a waste management system in place in my province since 2003 - waste, compost, paper recycling, and plastic/aluminum/glass recycling. We empty a small trash bin like twice a week for 2 people and 3 cats. Cat litter gets flushed. I don't even live in a big city! I live in Canada's smallest province. My house is far from zero waste but I'm working towards it.
A big source of waste is feminine hygiene products. I would love to a see a zero waste challenge where at least one person is on their period. I personally use a menstrual cup and cloth pads. It's much more cost effective and way better for your body and the environment. Why spend $10 a month on a box of tampons when a cup is $20-$40 and will last you 5+ years?? It literally pays for itself in a few months.

No, the zero-waste movement makes an exception for medication and medical devices.
I am on a lot of prescriptions but I just reuse the bottles so I didn’t include it in the video cause people didn’t need to know what I was taking lmaoo

Gonna try to do that with my jar! It's a slow passage for me because I've just realized how much things I have around. I wish people were more aware of how much they are throwing away. I really home that more people will try to go zero waste

It’s not expensive if you’re smart with your shopping. Produce can be purchased anywhere- we go to Vallarta or 99 Ranch because the produce is super fresh and not usually wrapped in plastic. We buy bulk of certain items and you eat what’s available without packaging. Also, making more items yourself like mayo and condiments helps. We drink a lot of kombucha so I make my own which is super easy and SO cheap. We dehydrate food or freeze it if it’s overripe before it spoils. We make our own tofu and plant milks. We use cloth paper towels, cloth diapers, cloth wipes, and make our own dish soap and laundry detergent. Our shower is all solid items. Check out @hellohibar for amazing shampoo and conditioner bars!

Aren’t there zero packaging stores in the US? Because here in Germany there are some tiny grocery stores that sell food items non packaged and you just have to bring some containers :)

You don't have to buy at a bulk store to be zero waste. Sometimes your normal food shops have food in recycled packaging that you can then compost yourself, i think it's important to actually look in your normal places of shopping for zero waste options before you go to a bulk store and pay all that money. Normal grocery stores are really starting to cotton on, you just have to take the time to look and read the packaging too. Saves a lot of money.
To the girl who works in the restaurant: ask if someone wants a napkin, straw and/or cutlery. Give people a chance to say 'No, thanks.'. People forget to ask!
Starbucks gives a cup discount but they STILL USE A DISPOSABLE CUP TO MAKE THE DRINK!!! I asked about it after seeing my barista do it, and it’s company policy
Not all Starbucks do this, but enough do that I just try to avoid it altogether. I've found that the coffee I make at home is just so much better, more ethical, and cheaper than Starbucks. It saves me, money, time, and calories.
You could use a container at the delicatessen instead of buying the meat pre-packaged. Also you don't have to cut down a lot, like you can still have a trash but less of it because it is an effort of cutting down still.
She said it’s easier in cities then in the country yet- like, I get ALL my grocery’s from my local country shop where everything is natural + without plastic bags and packaging. People in the city don’t realize how easy it is to grow your own veggies and get them in local places instead of spending so much at the “health” stores.

And while my disability pension is $14k a year, zero waste in my area is not an option. But my electric wheelchair eliminates my gas consumption and living in an apartment with a roommate helps me with my carbon footprint.
