And then in 73 when they got on the cover of Rolling Stone they didn’t use a picture of the band but a caricature drawing.

I absolutely love Dr. Hook. They did such amazing music. You should definitely react to some of their other songs, especially Cover of the Rolling Stone and When Your in Love With A Beautiful Woman.
Based on a true experience. A real Sylvia and a real Sylvia's mother. I saw mom doing an interview and she confirmed that the song is accurate, and that she liked him when he was dating her daughter, and how devastated he was about Sylvia leaving for college.

While it might be a "real" story, it actually wasn't the story of anyone in the band. It was written by Shel Silverstein. He also wrote "Cover of the Rolling Stone" for the band, and wrote "A Boy Named Sue" made famous by Johnny Cash.
Another memorable song from my youth. Good reaction Maggie.

I saw them live . It was a the best time, ever. What a party!
Dr Hook was so great, such a great unique sound.
One problem with this song for younger generations is that they don't understand the verse. Before cell phones, people often called from pay phones, and on long a long distance call, they paid by the minute. Thus, the operator would jump into the call when it was time to put more money in. That provides a backdrop for the painful conversation with Sylvia's mother, and gives a sense of the passage of time.
Wow . . . I was reminded of Jim Croce's "Operator" and how obscure references to payphones actually are
I remember well in the late '60s joining the line of guys waiting for a phone to clear holding a roll of quarters to call my girlfriend at her college.
Reacting to this song is why I subscribe. One of my dad's all-time favorite bands.
I used to listen to this song (endlessly) when I was a kid. It still reminds me of a neighbor who I went to school and grew up with.

Tremedously underrated band ,they made such beautiful music ,i have their greatest hits CD and it is in my vehicle always. Literally heart breaking lyrics. Two perfectly complimentery voices,great harmony.
I miss the days of pay telephone booths and having the operator butting in the conversation ,,stop my tears please..... "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" is a realty you have to experience along with FREAKIN at the Freakers Ball,, not for children
I know the operator chorus seems unimportant but it's actually relevant if you understand the time period. federal minimum wage in 1972 when this came out was $1.60. Zones for phones were usually separated between urban and rural areas, often as small as by county. So just phoning someone in a neighbouring county would cost you an hour's work for a 12-minute call. This significantly affects relationships and shows just how desperate the singer is. He's spending serious money for a young person just to say goodbye.
If you are of a certain age you remember when you only made or received long-distance calls in case of a family emergency or death. I think the only long-distance call my family received through the entire 1970's was for the death of my grandfather.
@@Bikebrh We spent a couple of years in the '70s living in South America. I was too young to remember much, but every month or two we would record a couple of audio cassettes and mail them to my grandparents in Canada, and vice versa. Aside from expense, the long-distance lines were rare (a few high-end hotels) and poor quality.
@@cmlemmus494 I actually have a few reel to reel "Letters on tape" between my mom and my grandfather from back then. I found them last year. It was bizzare hearing his voice 50 years later.
Love these guys. So MANY hits and real entertainers. If you want to hear one the saddest ever songs listen to Ray Sawyers "One More Year Of Daddy's Little Girl" - even he couldn't perform it live without crying. Love your work Maggie! You are awesome!

It's a small thing, but I love the way "please" transitions from the verse to the chorus, it's being said by both the operator and the caller.

there's a live version of them doing "Cover of the Rolling Stone", which was a big hit. In the 1970s Rolling Stone magazine was the ultimate rock magazine. If a band had their picture on the cover of an issue it meant they had made it big.

I saw them in concert 20 - 30? years ago. Great time, but they left the stage without singing Sylvia’s Mother. We didn’t leave. We just continued clapping and stomping feet until they came back out for an encore, and we finally got what we were waiting for. Everyone went wild!
This is a beautiful song and it is sung with such emotion.
Most people thought eye-patched Ray was the only/main singer of Dr Hook, but the (then) youngster Dennis Locorriere was actually the one who sang many of their hit songs. He's the singer with the beard.

I love Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. Did you know that Jim Henson named the Muppet band Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem as a tip of the hat to Dr. Hook? One band member even wears a cowboy hat.

Oh Maggs, you MUST do more Dr. Hook! Even back in the day they kind of flew under the radar of a lot of people (Check the lyrics of 'Cover of The Rolling Stone') They weren't 'big & flashy' but their songs always struck a chord in you. Whether it was sweet, funny, sad, or just plain silly, it was always just damn good!
My favorite Dr. Hook song is "More Like the Movies." Breaks your heart. This band is severely underrated and usually left off all lists of greatest artists on the 70's. Listen more. Dennis Locorriere has a truly unique voice - the "crying" isn't added for the effect of the lyrics - it's his singing voice. Makes him so very sexy. Thanks for this reaction.

David Bromberg’s Bullfrog Blues - Bromberg is a master musician who learned (lessons ) Blues guitar from the Reverend Gary Davis. A study musician for a time and is credited on two of Bob Dylan’s album. He also played for Jerry Jeff Walker for over 2 years including on “Mr. Bojangles”. His recorded version of the song has a narrative about the song that is quite interesting. Known for humorous lyrics at times he can play any stringed instrument and owns one of the largest if not largest collection of American made violins. He now lives in Delaware. His only song that made radio play was “Sharon” about a performer in a carnival and her sexy dance.
The songs shown were by Shel Silverstein. He also wrote "A Boy Named Sue" for Johnny Cash. Another for Dr. Hook was "Freakers' Ball".
Dr Hook are great. Not just the singles, their deep album cuts are fire too. Some of their lyrics are sheer poetry. Sharing the night together, little bit more, more like the movies, all the time in the world , These songs evoke the gentlest most fulfilling lovemaking ever. then there is the brash humour of cover of the rolling stone, freakers ball or the millionaire song

This song used to come on the radio when I worked on the night crew at a supermarket. We made terrible fun of it ("Hey! I thought Sylvia left already!") and sang along as we stocked shelves.

I remember I first heard this song as a young teenage boy and I HATED the song because it was a number 1 hit in South Africa and it was keeping my favourite song of the time out of the number 1 position. Now I can't remember my favourite song from back then and I love Sylvia's mother. Tastes change as you grow older!

As others have suggested, Cover Of The Rolling Stone is definitely a classic, and another crazy Dr. Hook song is Freakin' At The Freaker's Ball - both written by Shel Silverstein (who also wrote Johnny Cash's hit A Boy Named Sue).
Ray Sawyer (eyepatch) acts crazy most of the time, but he sang a real tearjerker of a song called “Daddy’s Little Girl.” Have a box of tissues close by if you listen to it.
This band was a hoot. Their songs were dramatic, often humorous. They were great performers.
They had a few great hits, but they had a lot more great songs that Top 40 AM radio wouldn't touch - some for obvious reasons (explicit themes and lyrics), others not so obvious. A couple of my favorites, in the not so obvious camp, are "Carry Me, Carrie" and "Cooky and Lila". Both are great songs that will tug at your heartstrings, but for opposite reasons. You should definitely give them a listen.
Youv'e opened a can of worms here...They are one of the greatest bands and so underrated you should go down the rabbit hole...
try "Cookie & Lylia" , "carry me Carrie" or "judy" or "Ballad of Lucy Jorden" to name a few.
Quality music is timeless. Quality art in general is timeless. Current music is just going through the sifting process to determine what is quality and will last the test of time. It is a process that has to happen. The problem today is there is little creative effort going into music. It is mostly automated instrumentation and voices are run through software to be 'corrected' manipulated. There is a lot of it being made, but little of it having a shelf life of more than a few months, if that.

This is the last morning is a great song
When the song came out I misunderstood it, since back them we didn't have google to provide background and I listened to the lyrics but thought it fit the trope of parents who disapprove of the lad their daughter loved and so they were intercepting phone calls and tell the boy their daughter wasn't interested anymore while telling their daughter they had not heard from the the boyfriend and suggesting he must have moved on and just dropped her. In fairness, the words work well with that interpretation and that was a common enough trope at the time, so it made sense. Happens that was not the reality, but it was years later that I learned that. Oh, and no, I never had a disapproving parent get in the way, so that wasn't why I think that. It was, however, a story I saw a lot in both books and shows I saw at the time.
The song I'd love to see you do from this group is Freackin at the Freackers Ball.

A wee bit older than you: this song has been present to me for more than 40yrs, now. A masterpiece. And a song, that will never go away from your mind (@least for me).

Next song of them should be: "Roland the roadie and Gertrude, the groupie." It'll make an impression on you.
A joke of old is: "The Mantra of a roadie". (Don't tell Tank the tech!) "If it's liquid: drink it! If it's solid: eat it! If it moves: F*ck it!" That is nasty, I know!
A story about this band: at a concert in Roskilde, Denmark (I wasn't there): some girls showed off. In result of that: at least the singer (not shure, if the whole band did) stripped and played the rest of the show butt-naked.
That is what I call: the way to do it!

This is typical of Dr Hook, they often tell stories with their music and it’s usually deceptively complex in execution, I was a huge fan back in the day, had all their albums (on vinyl of course). I saw a lot of excellent suggestions in the comments so I’ll add Kiss it Away, it might make you cry though.

Let's face it the great opera composers like Puccini wrote arias that had great hooks. They may not be referred to as hooks but listen to them and the melodies are iconic.
