    It's so refreshing to see such candor about diy projects instead of all these overly produced vids about how it was a breeze to do something of this magnitude. I smiled and laughed at several points so much appreciation!!

    One of the best and funniest diy vlog posts we've ever seen. My wife and I are about to do ship lap so thanks for the tips. Also, we are Canadian. 5 cent coins are nickels in Canada : ). Keep posting, you got a real talent!

    Currently only researching the idea on shiplap and I am so glad I ran into your video. You're explanations on having snacks is on point and yes treat us like children because we're frustrated and won't say anything until the project is complete!
    Here's a tool tip if you'd like to acquire any tools. Get used tools through Craigslist, yard sales or your local pawn shops. You may have to replace a blade but it's usually much cheaper than buying new tools.

We just poured a concrete counter top a few days ago. It can get nasty!!!. But in the end you still love each other and forget what just was said(mostly). Good advise on some of your stuff, nickles and sanding time..... thanks for the laugh.

      This was too funny and true. I am a carpenter and although it looks easy you have discovered that it really isn't that easy we just make it look easy because we have been doing it longer and already have all those tools they asked you about at Home Depot. I enjoyed this video

    What an adorable young woman. I enjoy her dry wit and funny gestures. I think the plywood idea is fine. Just go in proper sequence. Start at bottom, make sure you are level from the baseboard, removing of base board is fine but I am not sure it is necessary. Yes, you need tools but if your going to do DIY projects the tools will be good on all future projects too. Good advice on lots of nickels! I think paining between the boards as you go up the wall makes sense if you can so the paint doesn't bleed through. Make it fun....

    • @erinsfaces
      @erinsfaces  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s hilarious what you just said about remembering your marriage vows cause it’s so true! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 when my husband is doing a project or we are, he starts getting frustrated and starts cursing up a storm and I start laughing and that’ll calm him down. It gets funny after 8 years of being married. 😂

    You are awesome! I wish I had your hair, totally stunning. Your humor is entertaining while realistic - at least in this situation.
    Years ago (as in 3 decades), I was doing a condo flip (that phrase wasn't common at that time, it was ac6a quick reno & resale), and wanted an accent wall, hoping to take the focus away from the small rooms. I hadn't heard of Joanna Gaines or shiplap, I was trying to maintain a tight budget. I cut thin plywood into 8" strips, sanded rough edges just a bit and rolled accent paint on the surface. I nailed it in-place, touched-up the edges as needed and it was complete. I did not use adhesive, I did not want to cause damage to the walls for future owners. Due to the response from the buyer I added that touch to at least one wall in every flip - especially if there was a wall that had difficult to remove wallpaper or damage.
    There was a cottage-style house I flipped, it had strange, irregular texture on a few walls. The wood treatment would not be successful, many walls were curved. I bought 'expanded vinyl' wallpaper that looks like beadboard. That paper is not flimsy and can easily be removed. Certainly much easier and faster than actual beadboard plus it worked well on the curved walls.
    When I retire I might tackle a few more investment properties. I miss that creative process.

    • @erinsfaces
      @erinsfaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's amazing!!! You totally did it before it was cool :)! And I think you'd miss it til you started sanding. Then you'd be like "oh yeah, this is for the birds!" And you too can have that hair - Goldwell 8KG :)

      Erin's Faces ... Sadly I cannot have that hair. No matter what my hair will not curl. I finally accepted it, after dozens of perms and every possible alternative - I accept straight hair is my destiny.

    Thank you for this. Adding the part of make sure to remind why you love eachother to begin with, and make sure to have food, snacks, and drinks readily available, sooooooo very true.
    This goes for any big project you are going to take on in your home with someone. Sometimes it don't even take 4 to 5 hours before you feel like you are at eachothers necks in frustration. Remember it's NOT the person that is frustrating you it's the whatever it is you are working on figuring out at the time along with the problems that thing caused right before. Remember you are working together you have someone to help, they love you enough to help, and you love them enough to let them help you. Our visa versa.
    That wall looks really nice. Great job accomplishing and knocking that out together. Love your advice. We do tend to forget these simplest of things during timely frustrating projects. Keep in mind the outcome will be well worth it.

    My husband and I actually tackled this DIY plywood shiplap project in my dining room 2 weeks ago and you are so on point with all of your tips!! First off we did three walls so we decided to go the day before and purchase the wood and get it ripped down. Well no one told me that Home Depot charges .50 cent for every cut they do over 3 cuts...so that added up to an extra almost $20 to the cost of my wood. Secondly like you said the sanding..OMG...the sanding. Every one of those cut edges now are splinter heaven so be careful. We decided to use wooden craft sticks (like tongue depressors) for our spacing and those worked way better than nickels/pennies. Several of our boards were different widths too even though we told them to cut them 8" some were 7.75" some were a little over 8 so we had to measure them all width wise and stack them into piles so that we could achieve the same width all the way around the dining room because the boards have to line up in the corners. My husband told me 20 times or more that this was the stupidest thing he had ever done and he hated me for doing it...LOL. We argued, I cried but in the end he did what he was told and pushed through. It did take us three days to get it all done, working like 6-7 hours a day. He did however tell me that he loved it in the end and despite all the pain and suffering he went through he has agreed to do another wall in our house. The overall look is amazing once you are done. :)

      I just laughed out loud Kassie when you wrote "my husband told me 20 times...this was the stupidest thing he had ever done" - I hear you! And yes to all of the sanding - nuts! But it does look good, doesn't it? I'm glad we did it but I'm even more glad it's DONE! Thanks for writing!

    You are a Hoot!! I am about to embark on the shiplap wall project and stumbled on your video. My significant other is very handy, a mechanic and all around do it yourself with every tool known to man and some that aren't. If he doesn't own it he will make it. But, when I said I want a shiplap wall he said " a Whaaaat "? So thought I'd watch what you had to say about what we should know before we embark. The relationship advice was the best part for me as I can relate. We have taken on projects and at some point we find out I want to go one way and he the other! So yes the checking in with each other is on point. We like to call it " zig zag " and we will look at each other and laugh. So I told him from now on when we undertake a project together we need to discuss the intricate details beforehand so we have an idea of how it's going to be accomplished. This includes something as simple as moving a piece of furniture, he will inevitably want to turn one way and I'm thinking no no we have to turn the other way....Man v Woman thinking I guess. Cool Video Thank You

      They say use two sanders the job will go basically twice as fast. Also use a good sander. Those jitterbug type really suck. Use a nice random orbital like from dewalt, and it really makes a world of difference. I didn't realize what a difference it really makes.

    that is so funny! Loves your interpretation of the nickels falling out of the slots. We are doing this right now, and started at the top and working our way down because I was so smart (not) and wanted the board that was going to need to be ripped, down at the bottom of the wall where it wouldn't be so noticeable. DO NOT start at the top!!! lol. Like you say, the things you wish you knew now. Will know for when we decide to do the rest of the room next winter.

    • @erinsfaces
      @erinsfaces  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They make it sounds like you can start at the top or the bottom but I agree - starting at the top is harder! But good for you for doing it as a concept!! Thanks so much for the support - Go team :)!

    My husband is in construction (plumber by trade; municipal building inspector as his current career), and these points were helpful for me/us because since I’m not in construction, he’s always wanting to kill me because of what I don’t know. I’m wanting to do shiplap, and he’s only agreeable to it if we buy the pre painted boards.

    After this, I'm glad I went to Home Depot and bought real shiplap. This avoids the ripping of "boards" from plywood that are not all even. The real shiplap also is cut in such a way that the gap between the rows is preset and I don't have to worry about having nickles or painting the wall behind the "boards". It's also pre-primed. Putting a finish coat on before installing makes it easy to get the spaces between rows fully covered and then a light coat after any nail holes are filled over everything.

    • @erinsfaces
      @erinsfaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @AcornHillHomestead
    @AcornHillHomestead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some good tips here. I know Im late to this party but I would like to say that my husband is an extremely skilled tradesman and I have shown him many shiplap videos. He said he would rather pay the extra for the real material because waiting at Lowes etc for the paneling to be cut and all the other stuff that goes along with the budget jobs is more frustration than HE can tolerate. No nickels, no flimsy materials, no waiting in line. Plan way ahead for this job. Know if your wails or ceiling need to be furred out with furring strips because the walls are bumpy before you start. Know how to use the tools, don’t practice on the materials to be used after you start the work, have all the tools and materials ready. Go on a professional site or talk to a carpenter about the tools you need. We are embarking on this type of project, we have all the skills and professional tools and this will take us together 2 days for a 22 x 11 foot room ceiling without even painting to have the best job. A people please please stagger your butt joints. I have seen sooo m ay projects where people do not stagger their joints where they don’t have full length boards for the space and there is a seam running in a straight line from floor to ceiling. It looks hideous and terrible unprofessional. Ship lap is a treatment. It is not supposed to look perfect but one should at lease look like they know what they were doing and you cannot love the job if you spent all that money and it looks amateurish. Most of all realize this WILL be stressful and try to stay calm. The work is not forever but the results ARE. Good luck.

      Erin's Faces LOL!! In the end our job took a total of 8 hours without buying materials (another 1.5 hrs.) It turned out great and we are still married 😂. We are in our 50’s and 60’s and have been at this game a long time. We have renovated so many spaces. This is how we learned and saved a ton of money with DIY. Most trades people, especially older ones are more than happy to share advice and expertise. Just ask them. Don’t be shy. We ALL start out not knowing how to do things. I think back on our first house and realize we’ve come a long way! You will too. Best of luck. 🌺

    You can also use your speed square as a guide for the Jigsaw like you may do with a circular saw. Hold the speed square on the piece of wood you are cutting (as if you were marking your line) and run the base of the Jigsaw along the edge of the square as you cut. You'll have close to perfect 90° cut

    Funny. I knew Joanna was your inspiration. Look at the battle. You won the war. Victory! And you learned to squelch your inner voice with your hubby and him with you. These DIY adventures can be so trying as you are going thru them but you learn so much. Don't give up. Before you know it you will be able to build your own home! I started like you and 40 years later I can do almost anything. Paint, tile, electrical, plumbing, hardwood, framing, you name it and I have done it. No roofing or carpet or AC! Anyway, my husband wanted to kill me at times. We always played Meatloaf's '" I would do anything for love but I won't do that" HA! Get a theme song and crank it and you will learn to laugh with each failed effort and all the triumphs. You are brave and victorious to even do this video. Go girl. And the wall looks awesome to boot. Never give up on the DIY. It is so empowering. Watch Rehab Addict with Nicole Curtis if you don't already. She is really inspiring. Great video. Thanx for posting.

    Go over your marriage vows lol. Projects can absolutely test your marriage.
    Projects we've done over the past 14 years
    Turned our garage into part of our house, including bringing the floor up to house level.
    Replaced our carpet and linoleum with wood floors
    Built a pole barn in the back yard
    Built a gazebo
    Gutted our kitchen and built a new one.
    Rip off all your old siding and replace it with James hardy. That took two complete summers.
    And build a barn shed with a loft
    The shiplap wall is going to be easy peasy
    We've been married 32 years
    I actually had huge anxiety on the house residing project as it was just the two of us and I thought it would be too big of a job, but it turned out great
