The recipe for the japanning mixture was developed by @HandToolRescue - you can watch his video on it here - • Best Japanning Recipe
This week I restore two antique hand planes which I found at an estate sale and will be using on an upcoming project. I discovered that one is a Stanley No. 75 Bullnose plane that was probably manufactured in the 1880's, a first edition that is rare to find today. The block plane is not as rare but is most likely a 1930's to 1940's model so still very old.
I began the project by disassembling and removing the copious amounts of rust on each plane. Once I knew I had a rare model in hand, I decided to try a japanning finish. I blended up a recipe and set it aside to dissolve for several days. I proceeded to remove any remaining rust and dirt using a wire wheel, Dremel, and sandpaper.
Once the parts were clean, I smoothed the finish on each using files and sandpaper to remove corrosion and casting marks. I did not try for a completely smooth finish because these would have come that way new but I wanted to level off high points. I sharpened the blades using files, sandpaper, and a sharpening stone.
I proceeded to zinc plate everything but the blades to prevent future corrosion and then japanned them using a small oven to cure the pieces.
After this, I reassembled, set the blades, and tested performance. Each worked well and are ready to be used on future projects.

I don't understand much of this, I just know there's no one else I see doing this on youtube. This is fascinating to me. I keep watching

Came out great. And I will have to look into that link for the Japanning. I've tried to find a recipe for ages. Cheer!

Thanks! The video belongs to Hand Tool Rescue. The only thing I will add to it is to use thin coats and layer if you want a thicker coat. Before I filmed this I tried it on blanks and found that thicker coats will not cure at his recommended bake times. Good luck and cheers! 🍻

The results are great mate 👍 The Japanning app tips are also very good. All the planers I have are made of wood. I found one similar to yours on a flea market site, should I buy it? It doesn't look bad.

Thanks! I am not an expert on which type of planers are best for different jobs but I usually buy them if the price is good. I got the two in the video for almost nothing and last weekend I bought five more large planers for $25 at auction which are in worse shape than these but can be fixed no problem if I ever need to use them.

@@Restorology Thank you mate. Yeah, I'll buy that planer 🖖
