- Professor Roni Ellington has served on the faculty at Morgan State University since 2006. Her work focuses on mathematics education. Research interests include understanding the experiences of high achieving mathematics students, STEM education, and teacher professional development.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
I'm preparing to lead four weeks of STEM camp in rural NC and this video reinforces my passion to keep the STEM conversation going for our youth.

I love this video and how a teacher changed her life after taking her out of low level classes. I love how she says that teachers are "agents of change" and people who will change lives. Very inspiring!
Great presentation. I completely agree with her 4 main points. I have implemented these same four points at the university level over the last 13 years and I have been satisfied with the outcome. My students now have great jobs and are productive members of many communities. What I have said has impacted the decisions made in their lives.

This is something that I have been disappointed about in my rural area. My high school is K-12 and the county seat high school is spread out into two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. My high school has been denied the ability to expand and our curriculum has always included less than theirs but our students excel at the STEM classes when they are in college. I hope the next decade we can change this. Now, that my son will be in middle school in a couple of years, I am doing instead of just complaining about what needs to be done. I hope that your program is instituted into the curriculum for all students so we can have more productive and useful adults. Thank you for sharing your life with us, Roni Ellington!

I was lucky enough to hear Dr. Ellington speak to our STEM group in California in June, 2017. Most meaningful to me in her talk to us was her discussion of BE-DO-HAVE. K-12 Districts often DO things in order to HAVE impacts, but we forget we must first do the work to BE the people that believe in our students' futures, BE people who see our students and their parents and communities as valuable and rich resources, and so on. Dr. Ellington thinks and speaks deeply and explicitly about our responsibility to provide access to every student--every student, not just the ones we imagine have a future in STEM--so that they are empowered to innovate in ways that will liberate their communities and our entire nation. I think we often promote STEM to students underrepresented in STEM occupations as a career that will make their future and will earn them more money--and it will. But STEM empowers innovation in a way that will benefit EVERYONE, that is, our advocacy of STEM for these students builds the expertise and knowledge base of STEM and helps all of US.

I think the missing factor she is looking for is A, arts integration. STEAM is the all inclusive IQ/EQ training ground for not only our minds, but our behaviours as a society.
