I am a Black man. I was an ex-garage metal guitarist. And I am 'Classic' Metal fan (Priest, Accept, Metallica, Slayer, Dio, ect). After years of having to defend myself from racist bullshit from so called fans about how my skin color doesn't belong at this show, or how I can't play the music because 'my people just don't do it", I gotta thank you, Glen for laying it down for everyone. Major, Fucking, Kudos!
+Chris Cannon I love the message that metal is accepting to so many groups. I am a Christian, and I love the fact that we can all put aside our differences and just rock out together.
At a slipknot concert when the lights were on some skinhead was on someones shoulders waving a flag with a swastika, my friend asked the black dude standing next to him for the bottle he was holding, he said of course, and nailed the skinhead with with it.
MrGenedancingmachine He probably got worse when the lights went out, he was really in the wrong crowd to do something like that, we were there to hear metal, not see people act like jackasses between sets. Waving a swatstika around in a public area, especially a highstrung and inebriated crowd at a metal concert, is a quick way to cause trouble, regardless of freedom of speech. What did he expect to happen? That the crowd would go, "wow, what a cool guy."
MrGenedancingmachine I didn't, and I wouldn't. I'm just saying offensive behavior can have some backlash. It's not like the bottle hurt his that much, at most it'd have caught him wrong and cut his face. But he just looked in the direction it was thrown and started yelling. And a concert isn't a place where people can talk out their differences from 20 feet away. I mean I could see people being politely asked to move when smoking, or something, but he was just doing it to attract attention and cause something. I've also seen people get punished for moshing rudely, like not helping people up, and being assholes, shit some bands stop playing for. Which just pisses everyone off who was being respectful.
Hey Glenn, that Iraqi band you mentioned is called Acrassicauda. They put out their debut full length album last year called Gilgamesh. Really cool blend of thrash & middle eastern sound.
Anyone can throw out an apology. But did he actually mean it? Was this something he felt he had to do just as damage control? I heard he blamed it on being drunk on white wine or some bs like that.
@@Aaron-zh4kj his "actions" we're picking his @#cking arm up and extending it, why is there some much of a "symbolism" worship with people today? like they're worth apologizing too, most of the metal fans I know damn well aren't no angels themselves.
@@shelbyspeaks3287 Yeah, I'm not up in arms about his "actions" myself. Knowing him being the type of person he is, he was being a bonehead/trying to get a reaction. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯?
I dont' agree with his apology to be honest. He's sorry he was filmed doing it. Phil has a history of white pride bullshit. There's even a video on TH-cam of him years ago giving a white pride speech at one of his shows, he's goes off pretty hardcore in that video too. Sure he apologized, but it just shows what he is all about regardless if he apologizes or not.
+CrazyBadCuber Well... so what? There is brown pride and black pride. White pride is wrong? I'm just trying to understand how one kind of pride is "hatred" while another kind of pride is "cultural identity and healthy." It would appear that only "white pride" is hatred. Isn't there an MMA fighter with "BROWN PRIDE" tattooed on his stomach? Is that hatred 'bullshit' or is he just "positively identifying with his culture"?
CHERNOBYL STUDIOS Here here! Nothing wrong with being proud of who and what you are no matter what race or gender! Wait unless your Caucasian! Then you have to be proud in silence cuz someone might think your a racist. Well I'm proud of who and what I am. Don't like it? Too bad, get over it and thicken your skin.
CHERNOBYL STUDIOS lol you're a fucking tool man. Now you're a mind reader? You think I think black people saying black power wouldn't bother me? What the fuck did I just write above? Are you stupid, you can't read? I already acknowledged I don't think that shits right either. Also, just because phil said that, doesn't mean he's not going to get ANY consequences from it. He said it in a public place, hailed hitler while he was at it, in front of a bunch of people, and people carry portable cameras around with them everywhere these days. He deserves what he's getting. It's 2016. Grow the fuck up. There's no reason or need to be racist. Why is it ok for a racist to be hateful towards other groups of people, yet when they get backlash for it it's not ok for them to get consequences by the mass public for it? You're probably a god damned skinhead yourself. You're sure acting like one. Also I couldn't give any fucks at all what a drunk guy screaming white power means to you. You are not everybody. MOST people have a problem with racists these days. The fact that you do not, says a whole fuck of a lot about you. Now shut the fuck up, idiot. I'm muting this conversation so I don't have to hear back from a person as fucking moronic and stupid as you. Have a good day.
+CHERNOBYL STUDIOS The difference is that black people have faced prejudice for hundreds of years, so just like a "straight pride" it's not fucking needed whatsoever.
Yes Phil apologized...like he's done for years every time he's done this type of thing. Robb's point was enough is enough, stop placating the guy. It's like a junkie who swears they'll quit, then get's wrecked the next day. Comes a time you have to hold them accountable. I love Pantera, I love Phil's vocals. It's time to hold him accountable imo.
Wow really? How do you hold someone accountable though?? Your very idea on holding accountable for saying what they want IN America is what the Nazis did indeed do. yOU DON'T solve issues like these in that manner, the more intolerant towards intolerance we become the more intolerant we become, Education however is key, inclusion, not forced a bit of traveling and culture does you good. What we need to learn is not to be proud of our biological characteristics but our actions, attitudes and achievements we humans give to this world. That is TRUE POWER.
Phil grew up in the French quarter of Louisiana the most crazy and diverse place in the US. Phil is an Athiest as well so he did a live stream with AIU. Very surprising to see Phil as a fan of AIU. The only thing Phil is guilty of is not being ashamed of being white, which there's nothing wrong with that. In this situation he was fucking with hecklers in the audience. Watch his live stream with AIU. He tells a lot about his history and hobbies and racism isn't one of them. He gets a bad rap because of his image.
Jared Ellis Dime bag was the drunk one, Phil was the one on heroine and their old singer was the 80s high pitch singer on the album. Phil doesn't sing unless it's real low in tone.
Did you or your ancestors suffer under Nazi oppression? If not, then the apology wasn't meant for you anyway, so it doesn't really matter if you "buy" it or not..
Axeman Andrew true he does do the high metal scream but he doesn't sing high notes. Those high notes on the cowboys from Hell album was there old singer, back when they were glam rock. Granted, that's something nobody wants to talks about anymore.
Gay friend critiqued the 'Metal Uniform' once, said it needed a gay makeover (this was in the time Queer Eye for the,...whatever was on the air). I politely informed them we already had it (from Halford).
He seemed apologetic or at least saddened. No doubt it's stopped him from being completely arse fucked by the metal world, but that doesn't seem like the only reason he's apologised.
+TheAngryAntitheist I think the apology was probably genuine. Phil doesn't do anything he doesn't want to, and its not like he has a reputation to protect anyway, he will likely never be a major act again but he will always draw enough people to make a living so there's really nothing forcing him into an apology.
It's hard to listen to pantera knowing that he sees the world that way. Lyrics take on a whole new meaning. Walk on home *boy* sounds much different knowing who he really is.
The obvious thing to say, Glenn. I am russian, we know how really bad racism and Nazism. Unfortunately, not all my compatriots are aware of it. Metal, it's about the music and not skin color or religion (exept black metal, obviously). Sorry for the Google translator.
There is actually Nazi, Communist, Christian and probably muslim metal too. They mostly suck though, and are very marginalized. Christian metal is pretty big though, despite being mostly PG clean metal in the US.
There's still the question of WHO IN FUCK'S NAME WOULD DO THAT ON PURPOSE? Then again, there's a certain Russian metal singer who pulled a similarly moronic stunt(so I've heard, anyway), and didn't even apologize for it. I guess every community has its idiots.
@@ParadoxapocalypSatan those have their roots in 90s, when USSR collapsed and street neo-nazi movements were really powerful because of all the ethnic conflicts that took place back then.
The Iraqi band is Acrassicauda, and they managed to move to New York before all the crap happened. They released an album called Gilgamesh last year, and it sounds killer!
Good for you Glenn. I've been seeing a lot of casual racism in my personal life recently (I'm in the food industry, which is extremely diverse) and the most important thing we can do is stand up and publicly disagree. Racism lives in a bubble and too often, the people who hold these views are not challenged by the people in their lives. I consider it my duty as a friend and coworker to challenge these ignorant people when the line is crossed. For some of us, our impact is limited to those around us, for others like you, Glenn, a real audience can be reached and I applaud your effort.
Racism doesn't have a place in a modern society. Quite frankly, any sort of discrimination is outdated. And while I applaud him for apologizing and claiming it was a joke, I still don't see what motivated him to do the salute in the first place. I love his music and have for several years, but I cannot condone his actions, apology or not.
We have a small Metal community here in Lahore, Pakistan. What I love about Metal and like Glenn said that it is almost in every part of the world and ofcourse the passion of the musicians and the fans. Love to metal fans all over the world. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Haha not sure about that brother. Metal can be racist and elitist. It pushes people away with their “youre a poser” mentality. Definitely not the most inclusive genre, albeit my favorite.
Thank you for this!!! I loved Metal as a teen and moved away from it because of the racism... However my favorite 80 and 90s metal groups are still on my playlist! My kids think it’s Cool
I talked a lot about musicians, but don't forget about the fans, the ones who never managed to play an instrument but still feel those shivers down their spine when they hear an awesome riff, the ones who fill stadiums to see their favorite bands, the ones who buy their albums and merch, the ones who still when not being musicians, can get the whole feeling of a good metal song. A good friend of mine who's going through some pretty rough shit physically is unable to play any instrument, he's barely able to walk actually, but I am yet to find someone who's more passionate about rock and metal. He's holding on because of it, it's what gives him strength to carry on.
It's just a gesture, why are people making such a big fucking deal over a gesture??? "Ezcuse u it means hwite power!!1!!1!!11!", let me ask you something, does a gesture kill you? Did anyone get killed when Phil did the gesture? No? Perfect, then stop crying over a stupid hand gesture
thereisnochoiceleft Get that strawman outta here. Surw Hitler is bad, Nazis are bad etc but him moving his hand didnt suddenly signal the crowd to start slaughtering each other, he did nothing malicious. Youre just way too sensitive. Signals do have meaning. Not a violent nor harmful one though
And yet someone who is religiously worshipped within the metal community (Dimebag) regularly hung out and collaborated with David Allan Coe. Metal is a genre of extremists and elitists, and that will never change.
Reminded me of the mistake Lostpropests vocalist did. You can't make up for this with an apologetic facebook post. You can't get more disappointed than that either.
Glenn I love you man. I don't comment that much, but I've watched all your videos. I cannot get enough of you. It's like your my friend and I don't even know you.
On the subject of Metal being inclusive: As inclusive as Metal is, there still seems to be a mentality that revolves around an Elitist mentality that is pressuring people to conform. I can remember a couple years ago after graduating High School that many of my Metal friends (not all of them) were in the scene and liked the music more as a Fraternity & not for the music itself. Some of these people gave me & others shit for being into Core bands or anything that wasn't Thrash, Death, Black Metal or Doom. I personally couldn't care less about that shit because its about the music being good no matter what it is. Not being apart of a club. According to many of those people I was never a true Metalhead. Even though I liked a lot of the bands they liked; I also liked a lot of the bands they hated. & they never tolerated it. Pretty stupid shit. Even after these people aren't in my life anymore, I still see Facebook posts every now & then that bash "false Metal." If members of the Metal community focused more on the music & not being apart of some Exclusive Group like a bunch of "Mean Girls" & Hipsters, then Metal would have a shot at producing many great bands again. Because if there is still an Elitist mentality, the genre/scene won't have any room to grow. As a consequence that isolation will force it to fade away when it never had to.
But you didn't see the full video. Someone in the audience randomly yelled at Phil and called him a racist, so Phil did the salute as a joke. He was being sarcastic.
“It’s really hard to see your hero’s disappoint you” Phil apologized because he got caught and times changed. That’s the difference between the Metallica pic and Phil.
+zupperm Yeah they're still going, Their new album "Gilgamesh" was released at some point (not sure when lol). It's worth throwing them a like facebook.com/acrassicauda/?fref=ts
Love your videos/channel! Good points, Glenn, and a big thumbs up for calling out stuff that needs calling out. Metal does have a dark side that can't be ignored, as does humanity in general, but thankfully, it's a small part of the larger picture.
Metal community is the best community. When I first started playing I was always scared that because of my color I wouldn't be accepted. On my first ever gig I did got some weird looks, but all those were just a curious look because I was the new kid in the scene. They came up to me later and everyone was so nice. I totally agree with you man, it's about playing and performing regardless your sex, age, gender, skin color or ethnicity. Music unites us! 🤘
Honestly I don't care if the bands I listen to are racist or homophobic or whatever. I'm bisexual, but I listen to bands based on their music not on their prejudices. It'd be better if they weren't prejudiced, sure, but honestly, what do I care. My favourite guitarist could be homophobic, he'd still be my favourite guitarist.
Precisely, My favorite Drummers are "Hellhammer" from Mayhem and Darkthrone's "Fenriz" , They've said some pretty questionable things, but that doesn't remove the fact that they're amazing drummers.
The only correct response here is, “Yeah, you’re right. Racism has no place in metal (or anything else).” And while most of the people commenting seem to agree, there is a vocal minority that just seems to dig in their hills, equivocate, instead of admitting that a problem exists points to what another group or the other is doing.
I don't disagree. This doesn't appear to be the first time Anselmo has spouted racist or homophobic bull, though. If I understand correctly, he would do similar things at Pantera shows. It doesn't seem uncommon to find racism and homophobia in the metal of the 80s and 90s. That Metallica thing really disappoints me. I adore them. Hetfield was my idol for a long time, though I have reservations about the guy now. (Hoping he's not gonna turn into Ted Nugent.)
+Wil Bane About the Metallica thing, you can see they're way younger on that picture, and I bet it was meant as a joke, heck, Hitler salute jokes are made all around the world.
Brossel That's the thing. That's around the Black album era. Can we judge them for that now, almost 30 years later? Yes, but does that mean that's who they are now? No. David Bowie made statements in the 70s that were in supports of fascism and Hitler. That's not who he was when he died.
+Brossel: Yeah, especially with the nose mustache. You can absolutely give them shit for it, because some jokes _are_ fucked up. But in Phil's case it seems more genuine.
Why credit for him apologising? He only did it because of it being filmed and the heat he's getting for it. You're using the term fucking up like he accidentally broke a vase or something. What he did starkly revealed a deep rooted way of thinking in his head. The apology doesn't exactly mean much after that.
+Bryn Richards That's what I wonder, as well. Robb brought up some stuff that you really should take into consideration before making a video like this.
+TheTundraTerror ...and what does the band's age have to do with anything whatsoever? Talking about racism is a serious matter, no matter if you happen to be a lonely TH-cam commenter, a washed up 90's band or a friggin' top-notch politician.
Tolerate extremist ideas (racism here) in Metal or subject everyone to political correctness or self-censorship? Why just tell Phill a big fuck off. Thats more honest. Why make him apologetic, or make him the way we wanted him to be (AKA peer pressure). Metal has been a subject of censorship in the past and we should be advocates of freedom of speech. This political correctness pisses me off just as well as the ultra nationalistic BS that has been said by some bands.
It doesn't take a real man to apologize- it takes a person like Phil because he's always saying dumb shit, has to apologize for the dumb shit he's said,- & its not like its the first time he has said some dumb shit & had to apologize for it.
After the last : "The only thing that matter is : Can you play?", I was expecting a : "Except if you're a bass player, in which case we know you don't."
*Reads title* Very well said. And after watching the video, even better said. The only thing I should point out though is that certain people may interpret the phrase "racism has no place in metal" the wrong way, thinking it implies that racism has a place elsewhere. I completely understand what you meant, just pointing out the amount of silly people out there who may not.
Metal is supposed to be a genre for everyone, fat, thin, straight, gay, black, white, etc. But not just metal, this also applies to other genres, music should be shared, not kept to a selected group of people
@@lowerbackmutilator2987 I have no idea what "anti music" means but art without freedom of expression is always an idea ready to die. Freedom of expression does not exist under authoritarian rule. Also I wasn't talking about music as a whole, just metal, which was founded on the idea of not being told what to do or how to sound. That's why it broke into so many sub genres.
My issue is that Phil chose to end a charity/tribute event with hateful negativity. This is not the first time he's been called out on this stuff. When he is he says he's misunderstood, or he was drunk and didn't mean anything by it, he loves everyone....he cries that he's sorry. Then he does it again. Either man up and say, yeah I stand behind White Power and deal with the flack or stop saying it and then apologizing for it. He's gesture and yelling at the end of Dimebash has overshadowed what the event was about and turned what should have been a positive night into a negative division. I'm a huge fan of many of the bands Phil has been in but this kind of behavior really turns me off. And Phil has the fucking nerve to call out Rex Brown in the past on his drinking problems. Phil looks like a bloated out of control drunk right now. Get your shit together, Phil!
This really isn´t just about metal though, its pervasive in all types of music. I play jazz and its the exact same thing in that culture. Nobody cares about anything else than your ability to make good music, and that´s how it should be!
Couple things. 1. It’s not necessarily some people’s apology to accept. I’m still contemplating forgiving the man. White power doesn’t really offend you unless you have someone you love, someone you would die for that is a person of color. Child, Wife, significant other etc. 2. I have heard some horror stories about being 1 of the 7 black guys in an audience out of 100 + people. No, not everyone there is racist most of the metal community is wholesome and inclusive. But if everyone is head banging and drunk af, who is going to save me from getting lynched, spit on, etc? These are real issues that still happen, and the people that do this evil are smart, they know it’s always best to act when no one is around or paying attention. I have no doubt if a bunch of drunk skin heads were following and harassing me at a Slayer concert I would be saved by some sober metal brethren who see what is happening. Still not sure about the apology after all of this time. I love Pantera, but this reminds me of how I felt when I found out my favorite author, H.P Lovecraft wrote a poem about me being lynched.
Didn't that racist Phil Anselmo try to excuse it by saying it was because he had white wine in the back and they were drinking it or some shit? Totally uncalled for and I don't accept his apology.
There's an unspoken bond between metal heads. A brotherhood if you will. Never in my life have I met a more respectful group, and I am proud to represent my fellow brothers and sisters in metal, because of that mutual respect and love for the music.
+Shawn Jones lol mate thats utter bullshit, im a white guy , went to school in a black neighbour hood, a ghetto, got in the odd fight but on the whole i found living in a black ghetto less difficult than living in a white ghetto. Im wondering what your basing the statement "blacks could never contribute to White society" on? Seeing as you listen to Metal which evolved out of blues, and the god father of metal is a mixed race fella, without him metal would not exist, whats his name Jimi something? Then there is the simple matter of Roman and greek civilisations providing the basis for most white culture, seeing as your clearly an idiot, you probably dont know that much of the Roman culture, came from the greeks, and much of the Greek culture came from Egypt, while mine and your ancestors were building mud huts and working out which was the sharp end of a spear, they where building fucking Pyramids and charting the skies. Im sure your probably equally unaware that our number system and basis for science(even the word chemistry) evolved out of the Arabs and Moors> its not that White people should feel bad or guilty or black people are bad or should feel guilty, the fact is EVERY culture brings something to the table and in EVERY culture you have ignorant dick heads that give the other people from that race or culture a bad name, i think we have worked out you are maybe one of these people
Jessie Marie you know what makes it hard to “come to together”?? Everything you just said. When I see things many things that Phil and others do that’s racially offensive to many, I’m allowed to feel whatever what I want. Having someone tell me basically “fuck your feelings” followed by “let’s be friends” I’m like 🧐🧐🤨🤨🤨 there will never be a full on race war because fortunately, there many white folks who don’t silence black folks when one of their “cousins” acts like an ass and vice versa. The problem are the ppl who want to tell me how to feel when the subject at hand has no real impact to them. I’d never tell a Jewish individual how to feel when someone says something derogatory about their beliefs or people.
Hey man, as a mexican American who loves Metal i sincerely appreciate your message. However...the Phil thing...come on man, not an isolated incident his constant comments, yelling "White Power!!" At concerts, his little " You know what i really dont like about black people" speech at another concert, wearing a shirt bearing a modern swastika used by Neo-Nazi groups (during an MTV interview), him telling the guitarist from Machine Head he absolutely hated Machine Heads "Ni$#@r phase" don't ruin your message to make excuses for someone who clearly has a racist ideology and makes half assed apologies just because it will hurt his pockets. Saddens me even more knowing other members of Pantera were cool with this which is why i will never listen to their shit ever again.
Really nice build Dan! Ive owned several Invaders over the years.... I find that they "open up" with a HEAVY gauge string and an beat up tube amp somewhere in the D range. Thanks for putting out quality content and showing the world that you dont have to have $100,000 in tools to build a quality instrument!
Racism is not something that makes sense in metal. Racism requires a level of belief in authoritarianism. You have to accept the idea of a hierarchy as a moral state that is static by virtue of superficial traits. Metal is inherently anti-authoritarian, and loudly so.
Yeah, when we start giving shit to Varg Vikernes and his beliefs, than we can have this talk. Varg has been way more vocal and way more extreme in his views while being a, frankly, larger and more influential part of metal than Phil. Personally, what Phil believes is his fucking business and no one else. This bullshit of complaining about what someone does on the basis of personal views is none of your fucking business, it's none of my fucking business, and making a song and dance about it is unnecessary. This "forcing people to admit to the crime of expression a fucking opinion that the majority doesn't hold" is the kind of shit SJWs do.
+SpectreSoundStudios Okay, and the rest of points? You know, the ones about expecting people to apologize for expressing a fucking opinion? Edit: 5 hours later and not a peep.
Great video dude! I'm glad you made this, too many people focus on hatred and being better than another person for no reason, we should be focusing on the things that matter like MUSIC! and whatever other hobbies you have. You always gotta think about being in the other persons side instead of bullying others to feed your ego. Thanks again for the great videos man!
The best metal singer is gay, the best rock rock singer is gay, the best piano player is gay, and one of the pop artist is gay. Seems to be a pattern here.
" Racism has no place in metal. All that really matters is can you play?" Well this begs the question... What if a racist can play his ass off? Should he be accepted If all that matters is "can you play"?
+Johnny Flores Yes. I listen to communists if they rock (Rage against the machine) - and that religion has killed tens of millions. You have to be a special kind of stupid to not see the hypocrisy where communism is seen as benevolent edgy still, and the slightest white pride is seen as the Hollywood version of Hitler. Black violence against whites is apparently a non issue and black power is also a cute edgyness.
+impalaSS65 I can't stand that it is "edgy" these days to be into European socialism or communism or whatever you want to call it. Those people are willing to be blind to history.
I'm not so much in to the metal scene anymore these days. The last 5 years I've been more involved in punk. Living in the south and meeting all these punk rockers, you get quite a few racists and antisemites. I appreciate a good offensive joke, but blatant hate or discrimination has no place in a music scene of any kind. Be cool to one another. Party on dudes and, idk, be kind, rewind.
It's not first time Anselmo has screamed his white pride racist bs at a show and not the first time he's apologized for it. If somebody keeps doing something, it generally means they're not sorry.
As Asian I'm kinda shocked by western "political correctness". Any woman can scream "Female Power" loud in public and then get praised, yet Phil gets criticized by doing pretty much the same thing on the stage of a small club. Performers always act exaggeratedly on stage to get the audiences emotional. I'm quite OK with what he did and pretty much all my Asian friends don't feel offended at all. It's quite a shock seeing him being forced to apologize for doing something neither illegal nor serious and then still being criticized.
OR metal is nothing more than a genre of music (and more broadly, art) that, like any form of art, can be used express literally anything the artist wants - yes, even if you consider it hateful, yes, even if you consider it vile, yes, even if it shakes you to your very core. Art is not and _was never_ meant to be all sunshine and rainbows, otherwise every song in the world would be a vapid, soulless carbon copy of "Cumbaya" and you know it. I think bands that promote fascist or other such propaganda are conveying a stupid message, sure, but I'll never trample their absolute right (in the US, at least) to convey that stupid message through metal music. Saying shit like "metal isn't about that!" is just a No True Scotsman dodge, and if you truly want to combat those kinds of messages, you have precisely ONE option that will have any effect whatsoever: Don't support their music. That includes not supporting them monetarily, but more importantly not standing up on your soapbox and trying to shout them down/censor them. Censors are the useful idiots of provocateurs because taboo = attractive, no matter how much you wish it weren't so. TL;DR - I'm a massive fucking racist and me having an even remotely dissenting opinion means I support the Third Reich 2.0, or something. I'm sure that's all that virtue signaling retards walk away with when they read comments like mine, because muh emoshunz is more importent then reezon FUG U NAWZI 😭😭😭
I think it's a bit taking things easy to act like Anselmo did and just pull an excuse video after.. Probably because he saw danger in his business and profit (aka food). There are no excuses for this kind of behaviour, he just deserve to fall into ignorance and be forgotten by the metal community.
Can someone please tell me the song playing the background when he's actually talking. I've been hearing it a lot in the videos and it's driving me crazy. It starts right at the beginning after the intro guitars.
How would you feel if you'd have to record a band who randomly throws Nazi salutes and is known for assiociating heavily with the whole southern pride bs ? Would you be all "hey it's okay, long as you play" ? I don't think so. Appologizing like 10 year old without meaning it is not "pretty fucking cool". especially if you been doin' it for 20 years. It doesn't just matter "can you play" to me: if someone crosses the line and is blatantly affiliating with KKK on the regular, I couldn't give two fucks if he can play or not.
hi glenn, the band is called acrasicauda. they eventually escaped to the US. it was in the documentary. they met metallica and hetfield signed a guitar and gave it to the guy. it was great!
The woke SJW "anti-racists" tend to be the most racists hypocrites out there today. All they do is make racist generalizations about people based on skin color, and usually have a deep hatred and aggression toward white people based on a dishonest false narrative. These woke SJWs calling themselves "anit-racist" is like a group of people who go around beating animals calling themselves "animal lovers". They obfuscate who they really are and their intentions by dishonestly branding themselves as something they aren't. Skin color would be irrelevant to a real anti-racist and they wouldn't go around viewing everyone and making assumptions and generalizations about them according to their skin color. Wokism is just neo-racism of today
I don't think its fair to even have the conversation "racism in metal" when mainstream hiphop has been racist since its inception, AND, anselmo's specific circumstance was that he was tired of people calling him a racist and skinhead because of the way he looks, so he did the salute to piss people off and it got out of hand. WHETHER OR NOT THAT'S THE MOTIVATION behind what he did is irrelevant. We have rappers with names like "ghostface killer" which is a racist name no matter how you slice it, and Wu tang gets mentioned on mainstream sources constantly. If its ok to be a racist rapper or rap group, then let the one or two out of every 1,000 metal bands that want to be racist alone and let them be racist too. Fair is fair. Its actually alot less common to see racism in metal than most other genres because metal is the genre of outcasts and outcasts know how it feels to be ostracized and tend to be accepting. With a few exceptions, metal is pretty much racism free, and the few examples of racist metal bands are already disavowed... again, UNLIKE IN HIPHOP which is more mainstream, and embraces their racist artists. So this shouldn't be a conversation. Not 4 years ago, and not today.
Ghostface Killah is taken from a karate flick. Learn your facts before you spew fucking bullshit out your mouth. The fact you had to go talk about whole OTHER genre instead of acknowledging white metal guys can be insensitive towards minorities shows how unwilling you are to admit there’s a problem. As an Asian guy I’ve experienced more racism in metal than hip hop. Sucks because I liked that music but go on about how knowledgeable you are.
@@noodlehoppa7212 I am aware of the origin of the name, and no matter how you slice it, its a racist name. We have COUNTLESS examples of hip hop racism, and hip hop is mainstream. Hip hop's racism is universally accepted. And as an asian person, I'm sure you'll continue to experience racism until you start looking at yourself as a human being instead of a race modifier. And as far as you personally experiencing more racism in metal, you must have lived in the one area on the planet where racism in metal is tolerated, because I've been in the metal community since the early 80's and I know damn well that racism in metal is almost nonexistent. As a matter of fact, aside from a few racist bands over the decades, I've met maybe 25 fans in metal in my lifetime, that were racist. So maybe you're not getting friction because you're asian, maybe its because you're an asshole who is too busy identifying yourself as asian to make friends and enjoy yourself. Or maybe its all in your head. Who knows. But my original point stands, and you've only proven it more true. Especially since it can't be argued that hip hop tolerates racism in its ranks, and racist artists win awards, get radio play, etc. The reason I brought that conversation up is because THAT is a problem. There's not enough racism in metal for it to EVER be a problem. The metal community has always been accepting. Just because metal heads don't like YOU doesn't mean they're racist. Don't come over here trying to piss on facts.
@@bryanharrison3889 Hip Hop isn't racist, what you talking about? Ever heard of the BEASTIE BOYS or 3RD BASE? White dudes which are respected by most of black rap artists. WU's Ghostface ist a massive superhero comic lover. Why is that name racist? Because you say so?
Hi Glenn! Hey man every time I watch ur videos, I realize u use a distressor for ur voice. I want to know how u deal with the noise and noise Gates, I'm running a TH-cam Channel and I try it a few times but have a Lot of noise. I don't know if u have a video showing that, if not, hope you can make one.
TBH, I couldn't care less whether someone is racist or bigoted. What someone believes or believes in isn't nearly as important as what they do and what they say. I see no transgression of Phil nor Hetfield/Ulrich so I really see a reason for either to apologize for anything other than cowing to Twitter SJW's and other similar social media shitholes...
"What someone believes or believes in isn't nearly as important as what they do and what they say." Giving a nazi salute is doing something, and it's not something most people appreciate other people doing.
The thing is, either you are racist or you are not racist. Apologizing for a nazi salute doesn't mean you are no longer a racist, it means you got caught out. I loved Pantera but I won't be buying any music from someone who judges people according to their skin colour.
Unfortuanately "true" metal or punk guys are getting pretty hypocritic these days. Supposedly fighting against stereotypical thinking, but they're the first ones pointing at a guy in a suit and saying "look at him, he's not metal". Or pointing at a scene/deathcore type of guy and saying "He has no idea of real metal"... I went through so many stages of appearence like long hair, always black clothes, black nail polish, punkrock stuff, ear gauges and everything... What I learned as a musician, I can wear whatever the fuck I want and still know every Iron Maiden song!!!
I'm dissapointed how Phil actually apologized to the whole politically correct police, considering his tough guy image. Political correctness is growing, as Phil didn't had as much trouble for expressing white pride during 90s. Most of time rightist imagery in metal were meant as a joke even though classic metal bands nowadays should have firm rightist ideologies to smash the political correctness of cultural marxism. There is an affirmative action and double standard going here. Other races and cultures are allowed to be proud of their identity, even when they're expressing that pride with mass rapes and violence towards whites, as in case of refugee crisis in Europe, or in case of pretty much all the history of racial tensions. Black power? Yes, it's being expressed all the time in mainstream rap, together with decadence among western culture, although not as brilliantly written as any work from white traditionalist and neofascist writers.
Glen, there is nothing "stupid" about what Phil did, only racist and unacceptable. Calling it stupid is like saying he's stupid to ignore the consequences or forget he was being filmed, which is the only thing he is sorry for. Phil isn't a stupid person. He's a bad person.
I don't listen to a huge amount of metal (just here for the audio engineering) so I had no idea who this guy was. I thought to myself "he's probably from Pantera or something." Quick Google search... YUP
People say a lot of things about metal, but let me say I have never felt such strong camaraderie within a group of completely random and diverse strangers, before I stepped into the pit. It's like I knew these people for years man. Really is an awesome experience when you're in a good crowd
Heck I'm almost blind myself, and I'm saving up to a guitar starter pack to actually learn how to play. Nothing advanced at all, a guitar + amp. And it's all thanks to you Glenn. I've been listening to metal for the last years or so. And I'm doing this to stop using sampled guitars because, as you said many times, they suck big hairy donkey balls.
There was a wider context to the incident. Phil claimed that it was a satirical response to hecklers in the front. It was a silly thing to do but there was a wider context to the image. People should research the incident and get full details before a witchhunt (that's not directed at Glenn).
Thank you for mentioning that the best metal singer in the world is gay. There's still so much homophobia in metal it's sickening.
I've got no use for homophobia either.
+SpectreSoundStudios ditto
+SpectreSoundStudios What's the name/band of the singer you mentioned?
+Kijiji Judas Priest
+Chris Cannon I love the message that metal is accepting to so many groups. I am a Christian, and I love the fact that we can all put aside our differences and just rock out together.
At a slipknot concert when the lights were on some skinhead was on someones shoulders waving a flag with a swastika, my friend asked the black dude standing next to him for the bottle he was holding, he said of course, and nailed the skinhead with with it.
Not cool man. The bottle could have been recycled. Nazis are waste that rot slowly.
Your friend is a scumbag
MrGenedancingmachine
He probably got worse when the lights went out, he was really in the wrong crowd to do something like that, we were there to hear metal, not see people act like jackasses between sets.
Waving a swatstika around in a public area, especially a highstrung and inebriated crowd at a metal concert, is a quick way to cause trouble, regardless of freedom of speech.
What did he expect to happen? That the crowd would go, "wow, what a cool guy."
Daydream Anatomy
You don't assault people, its very simple.
MrGenedancingmachine
I didn't, and I wouldn't.
Really cool blend of thrash & middle eastern sound.
yep saw them in San Diego and got their DVD signed by them. they live there in San Diego now
Yo
please tell me it's a concept album about The Epic of Gilgamesh
+MutilatedMetalhead It's an amazing band, I remember that documentary.
+MutilatedMetalhead Kickass band imo.
Anyone can throw out an apology. But did he actually mean it? Was this something he felt he had to do just as damage control? I heard he blamed it on being drunk on white wine or some bs like that.
How do you judge if someone is genuine with their apology? Only answer I know to give is generally, the individual's actions after the apology.
He's only sorry cuz he got caught.
Didn't read past the first sentence. Cheers.CrazyBadCuber
It's time to hold him accountable imo.
robb never apologized for saluting
If this was the first time Anselmo had been accused of racism I would probably buy the apology, but it isn't so I don't.
Yeah, I don't think he gjves a fuck!! He is STILL a Legend and the rest of you are pawns
Hell yea. Rob dresses like a leather daddy. Dressing in leather is a historical part of a segment of the LGBT community.
I feel like that was more of a forced apology just to protect his image and the band's.
+TheAngryAntitheist This is definitely what it was! ;)
Phil protecting his image? Like he ever cared about that in his life hahahaha.
+Arnold Moore The thing is he didn't acknowledge he was wrong. He was spouting bullshit to protect what's left of his image.

Even black metal nowadays isn't about religion. Damn, you even have Rudra who plays some kind of a hindu black metal lol
There are lots of rusian nazi bands. Guess they like to be enslaved by germans lol.
There's still the question of WHO IN FUCK'S NAME WOULD DO THAT ON PURPOSE?

+Tedris4 Great to hear! I wondered what happened to them too.

Ronnie James Dio was a big advocate for no bigotry in Metal
Hence Ozzy>Dio x infinity
That Iraqi band, Acrassicauda, left to Turkey, and then got refugee status in the US. Most of the band members live in New Jersey now.
He was being a typical drunken bastard, don't get me wrong i've used that excuse before but sometimes it brings the dark truth out of people

Glenn, you motivate the living shit out of my life with these videos. Keep them coming, I'm (we're) eager to learn!

SpectreSoundStudios Thank you!
Even after these people aren't in my life anymore, I still see Facebook posts every now & then that bash "false Metal."
If members of the Metal community focused more on the music & not being apart of some Exclusive Group like a bunch of "Mean Girls" & Hipsters, then Metal would have a shot at producing many great bands again.
I believe the Iraqi metal band was Acrassicauda. According to wikipedia they were granted refugee status in the US.

Precisely, My favorite Drummers are "Hellhammer" from Mayhem and Darkthrone's "Fenriz" , They've said some pretty questionable things, but that doesn't remove the fact that they're amazing drummers.
The only correct response here is, “Yeah, you’re right. Racism has no place in metal (or anything else).”
And while most of the people commenting seem to agree, there is a vocal minority that just seems to dig in their hills, equivocate, instead of admitting that a problem exists points to what another group or the other is doing.
every metalhead in the world needs to hear this, and everyone who hates metal should even see this, well spoken my man.
+Wil Bane Yeah Bowie was doing an incredible amount of cocaine at the time. That tends to skew ones judgement.
Wil Bane Exactly, what matters is how and who you are now, to a degree of course,
+Brossel: Yeah, especially with the nose mustache. You can absolutely give them shit for it, because some jokes _are_ fucked up. But in Phil's case it seems more genuine.

Why credit for him apologising? He only did it because of it being filmed and the heat he's getting for it.
You're using the term fucking up like he accidentally broke a vase or something.

+TheTundraTerror ...and what does the band's age have to do with anything whatsoever? Talking about racism is a serious matter, no matter if you happen to be a lonely TH-cam commenter, a washed up 90's band or a friggin' top-notch politician.
Mr. Gul
Now you're just being stupid.
Anselmo has a history with racism thing. Pantera's song A New Level is an example. When it comes to the live version, Anselmo says white power.

But not just metal, this also applies to other genres, music should be shared, not kept to a selected group of people
I couldn’t agree more with this video. Awesome video Glenn
What is the song at the introduction of the video please ?
Metal should be inherently anti authoritarian.
Comments like this is why anti music has to exist. A literal individual expression in form of music shouldn’t inherently be anything
False.
Totally uncalled for and I don't accept his apology.
not only that but he's done this many many times, and had speeches about it too.
There's an unspoken bond between metal heads. A brotherhood if you will. Never in my life have I met a more respectful group, and I am proud to represent my fellow brothers and sisters in metal, because of that mutual respect and love for the music.
+Chuggsbigman then you have the metal elitists....
acolytes777 Always a turd in the blanket
So what was the racist part? when he saluted or when he said "white power"
+TheMango121 You don't know? Maybe both?
Regenas If you don't know, you wouldn't understand the answer.
216trixie If you cant provide me an answer, you dont know why its racist either :)
***** you were muted cause 12 year olds dont need to discuss adult matters
Im sure your probably equally unaware that our number system and basis for science(even the word chemistry) evolved out of the Arabs and Moors> its not that White people should feel bad or guilty or black people are bad or should feel guilty, the fact is EVERY culture brings something to the table and in EVERY culture you have ignorant dick heads that give the other people from that race or culture a bad name, i think we have worked out you are maybe one of these people
Phil got a track record outside of the salute. It’s easy to be apologetic on the surface when the only that will happen is a few tweets.
What is the background music playing in this video? I have heard it in a couple of your other videos as well
Yeah, when we start giving shit to Varg Vikernes and his beliefs, than we can have this talk.
Varg is a convicted murder. A total scumbag in my opinion.
+SpectreSoundStudios
Okay, and the rest of points?
+Ryan robinson music If it means anything, maybe it's that gay people have very, very good reasons to make amazing, emotionally moving music.
rok muzic iz shit its satanik end fredy marcuri suxxxs.
Jeremy Estruc Piss off. Why are you even here?
+Jeremy Estruc lol
+Ryan robinson music So I gathered it's Judas Priest, Queen, Elton John, and...George Michael?
What is the song, or at least the band in the end?
" Racism has no place in metal. All that really matters is can you play?"
Well this begs the question...
Black pride is empowering, white pride is racist, apparently.
then don't express your racism
I'm not so much in to the metal scene anymore these days. The last 5 years I've been more involved in punk. Living in the south and meeting all these punk rockers, you get quite a few racists and antisemites. I appreciate a good offensive joke, but blatant hate or discrimination has no place in a music scene of any kind.
Be cool to one another.
Party on dudes
and, idk, be kind, rewind.
It's not first time Anselmo has screamed his white pride racist bs at a show and not the first time he's apologized for it. If somebody keeps doing something, it generally means they're not sorry.
This is by FAR the best response to this controversy that I've heard.
You might want to read a history book & look up the word context.
i bet most people think this video is crap around 13-50 seconds into the video
Is there a full version of the intro song?
Yea, look up "the eagle has landed" by Spectre Sound Studios
I think it's a bit taking things easy to act like Anselmo did and just pull an excuse video after.. Probably because he saw danger in his business and profit (aka food).
There are no excuses for this kind of behaviour, he just deserve to fall into ignorance and be forgotten by the metal community.
His personal actions should determine people's opinion of his music, I'm a huge Mayhem fan but that doesn't mean I support Varg Killing Euronymous.
+SlikkTim yeah
Keep southern pride away from Nazism please, not all of us are resist fuckheads
hi glenn, the band is called acrasicauda. they eventually escaped to the US. it was in the documentary. they met metallica and hetfield signed a guitar and gave it to the guy. it was great!
Metal shouldn't be some anti-racist leftist thing. It should be uncensored, because of freedom of speech.
I believe in freedom of speech, but freedom of speech also means I'm free to say FUCK YOU if you're a racist piece of shit nazi.
Right on! No reason for bullshit hate in metal…and all forms of music really.
@@bryanharrison3889 Bravo! you've shouted the mouth of that black racism apologist!
"What someone believes or believes in isn't nearly as important as what they do and what they say."
Giving a nazi salute is doing something, and it's not something most people appreciate other people doing.
The thing is, either you are racist or you are not racist. Apologizing for a nazi salute doesn't mean you are no longer a racist, it means you got caught out. I loved Pantera but I won't be buying any music from someone who judges people according to their skin colour.
Who the fuck cares .... metal was never supposed to be political correct ... and racism will never go away
Ok Hitler
So hard to see your heros disappoint you, but so awesome to see them own the mistake and apologize.
he doesnt mean it. its just damage control
If this was a black guy no one would say anything.
Ethiopian Crackhead this isn't a cornfield get the straw men out of here
Unfortuanately "true" metal or punk guys are getting pretty hypocritic these days.
Meister Dejv you’re brain damaged man
Glenn: off topic but how do you feel about a band playing all together live in studio to make a record?
Sensitivity in metal: a very bad idea
