I agree with The Crew being on here. That was one of the first games I got getting into the hobby and was not really here for it. I really need someone to teach me Root.
I think The Crew (and maybe all cooperative games) are very group dependent. The first time I tried introducing The Crew to my group it ended up just feeling kinda like an “activity”, there wasn’t much tension. Then about two years later I played it on TTS and had a blast. Then I tried it on BGA and it was the same (a blast). Then I reintroduced it to the same group, but with one person swapped out with a new person, and we have had LONG play sessions where the players are like “one more mission!”. I think you need to have people who are comfortable with each other, who hold themselves accountable and are even comfortable with a little ribbing (or in my case we literally yell at each other for messing up), and who can stick to the no table talk rule. Too much table talk RUINS the tension.
@@paulhamrick3943 i played it with my sister's and at that time we were all new to modern board games. I'll have to give it another try on bga. I was excited to play it but wasn't working for me the few times I played it.
@@IllBuythePopcorn I think it’s definitely group dependent. My group plays a lot of euchre and oh sh*t so they love trick taking games. But yeah what reignited my interest in the game was a Tabletop Simulator session that went surprisingly well.
Root is just delightful, but it definitely requires a group willing to replay it fairly regularly to get the most out of it. Also, hi! I’ve enjoyed watching your Oscar’s rankings and reactions. Avoiding some of the reviews for now as I still need to see the films myself, but thanks for tuning in! :)
I agree with all the game that i got to play on this list (Vilainous, The crew, code name, arnak and 7wonders duel). I don't agree for Cascadia and akropolis, mainly because of the theme, i don't care for Akropolis. Cascadia is easier to read and simpler to teach too. At least in cascadia, objective change a bit at every games so i see a better replayability too. I do prefer Verdant to both, because of the theme and art.
I can certainly agree that Cascadia is a better intro game, I don’t think there’s any denying that! You’ve got a point on the variability too, but for me the last few plays have just fallen so flat. No tension, excitement, no real care for what’s happening, just taking a tile and moving on. I hope to rekindle that love for it someday! Def think verdant is better. It and calico are born incredible imo.
Final Girl for me… that game had had so many rave reviews and I found it just “OK” too fiddly to setup for the amount of play time, and way too punishing
I think Ark Nova got it’s hype from so many people saying it was Terraforming Mars but a Zoo. Sort of what you were describing, and since Terraforming Mars is well received it was natural that people were going to jump on Ark Nova. I however, did not like Terraforming Mars and neither did my husband, so when people kept hyping Ark Nova as very similar to it, we said it was a hard pass for us. So I don’t know that Tom Vasel’s 10 rating was the full reason it gained so much popularity so quickly.
“We’ve only been hating on Cascadia for a couple of months” LOL y’all really be sippin on that hatorade! Fun watch. P.S. love the podcast, as a movie and Board Game nerd it’s like It was made for me.
Awesome video dudes, I'm with Max on this I suck at Root and I believed it was overrated. What it turned out to be was mostly a hard teach, long time between plays and a generally surly gaming group. I teach board games to retired folks at a FLGS weekday afternoons, we call our selves "The Geezer Gamers" ....BTW, Dominion is one of the games the geezers are ALWAYS wanting to play.
Haha! Arnak is one of my favorite games. Nostalgia certainly plays a part, considering some of my favorite franchises are Indiana Jones (only the first three), Tomb Raider, and Uncharted. It's also one of the first Euro style games that clicked with my brain so it'll always be pretty high.
Honestly the connection to Indiana Jones and uncharted may have hurt it for me. I expected more excitement and drama. :/ that said, I need to give it another shot, and with the expansion this time also. I’m so glad it works for you! :)
Don't you remember that one time Indiana Jones progressed up the research track at the last second to gain a resource he needed to exchange for a tile he was able to reach on his turn?
I suppose I need to give it a shot! That said, I’ve yet to connect with a pure deck builder. Normally i want it to have something else there too- ie: clank!, dune imperium, etc,
My casual group will nit pick the wording on the cards to death, i wish they were bigger cards to fit an FAQ on them. I should just sell it, not worth the hassle.
The issue with Root for me is that I think things like the COIN games (which I get will put a lot of people off) do asymmetry better. Doesn't mean Root isn't excellent but it's so highly rated. Personally I wasn't a huge fan of Terraforming Mars or Dead of Winter, both extremely highly rated when they came out. Neither are bad games of course.
I haven't played a COIN game. But, for me, the issue with Root is that you have to teach each player how to play a completely different game. They all interact with the same board and cards, but the level of effort to play is lower than the quality of gameplay. To me, Root just felt like a Euro engine builder with opportunities to sabotage other players' engines. Despite the asymmetry, there was nothing factions get to do that is fun or exciting.
Dead of Winter is an awesome game. As for Terraforming Mars I guess it's a great game, but I played this thing only once and I don't want to come close to it ever again. It's WAY WAY WAY WAY too complex for me. And insanely long on top of that. Dead of Winter is long, but at least you enjoy it.
Overrated is so subjective...especially for a list that includes games that are both older & new-ish. I almost feel like there should be 2 lists, 1 for older games & 1 for newer games. Some of the newer games on the list might fit better as "over-hyped" than overrated. Good games that everyone is just tired of hearing about🤷♀️
I hate ROOT and sold it back! Yaaaark! And Terraforming Mars is the #1 for me for sure! And anybody can say anything about their own taste > I don't care at all! I won't prefer a game becaue other prefer it LOOOL never ever! So what's the use of those subjective lists? LOL

Root is a COIN game and those aren't for everyone. It's a very fighty game, and I think most Euro game enthusiasts who don't like games where the player interaction is so in-your-face like Root aren't going to be fans of Root.
Agree with Cascadia. It’s fine. I just never want to play it, but would if asked. … I think Santorini is overrated. I feel like people rave about it and it’s another I find to be just okay.
If Dune has a million fans, I’m one of them. If Dune has one fan, then I’m that one. If Dune has no fans, that means I’m dead. If the world is against Dune, I am against the world. I love Dune till my last breath.
The Crew is absolutely overrated. But I need to give it another try. I just recently played Arnak for the first time and it was fun, but not a game I have any interest in owning.
Eh, I think Root only works well when you have a dedicated group. Outside of that, it's def overrated. I think the Crew is overrated for those that like other tricktaking games; for me, who normally hate tricktaking, The Crew is the only redeeming game in the genre. Ruins of Arnak, I def feel is overrated; Dune Imperium does worker placement/deck building better. Arnak's flaw is that the temple track is just more compelling than actually adventuring out into the main board. Ark Nova has an accessible theme, but it really feels like a hodgepodge of different elements with nothing in particular standing out. On the flipside, I'm definitely a Terraforming Mars fan, but it's definitely not accessible, even less so without Prelude. It's a great game, but yeah, probably overrated.
All great thoughts imo! I’m definitely excited to try Terraforming Mars and see where it lands for me. Part of why gaming is so great is there’s something to appeal to everyone. We def enjoyed reacting to this list, but hope we didn’t hurt any feelings! 😅
I know ya'll have probably heard this a million times... but I still don't get the hate for Arnak. It's a great game! Sure Dune is WAY better, I agree. But personally I wanna play both.

When we talk about how we abhor it, it’s pretty tongue in cheek and hyperbolic. That said, we do definitely prefer dune and I’m not sure there’s a situation in which I’d rather play Arnak… but that’s okay!
Arnak and Dune are two totally different games. I enjoy the interaction of Dune, but Arnak is another puzzle to solve. Every time I play Arnak I have to ask myself why I don't play the game more, because it is really streamlined and with different artifacts and tools that come up the game goes differently. Should it be #3 family game, I don't know, but it is definitely a family weight because of no take that element and one does not need to be an expert in the game to feel like you have accomplished something. Is it overrated? For me personally it is not, any game where when you end the game you don't feel like you haven't had the chance to win or you weren't in the driver's seat or you have accomplished something can't be overrated.
Arnak is a 6. It's completely fine. It's resource conversion with a tacked on deck building element so people can pretend it's more interesting than it is. It has beautiful art that surrounds the research track that everyone is focused on most of the game. It's way overrated.

Haha this list is utter rubbish! I have only heard people say they like Dune: Imperium over Arnak so how can it be overrated? Also, Code Names and Dominion are amazing at getting people into the hobby or introducing mechanics they had never tried. How does that make them overrated? I love the humor and tongue in cheek responses, but vehemently disagree with this list. All of these games have a place in the hobby and are well-regarded for good reasons.
I totally agree! For a game to be overrated it’s gotta be widely considered to be good, right? We’re just having a laugh! Certainly do think some of these are truly overrated personally, but it’s all subjective and I’m clearly in the minority! :)
@@Tablenauts Yeah I appreciate the humor and am fine to have a dissenting opinion. People can enjoy or rag on whatever games they choose. Seriously thought, it's really interesting to see this list. I disagree with some inclusions and celebrated with others. Fun to see what this particular community of gamers finds is overrated.
Ha! I’m thankful you can look past it ;) it’s all just fun and games - literally. Just a bit at this point.
Glad you enjoyed the video Chad! Thanks so much :)
Scout is better than the Crew
💯
Root is overrated...Wish I didn't buy it...
Arnak is so much better than Dune Imperium. So. Much
You’re a day late buddy! ;)
@@Tablenauts I watched this video yesterday and literally had to wait until today to post 🤣
@@peterbelcher-truss569 hahahahaha I love that 😂
this is rubbish! Joke
Villainous and The Crew definitely are a niche game.
But its not overrated.
TM is overrated though 🤣
Ha! The best part is that the list itself is overrated?! 😂 it’s all fun and games. Def need to try villainous and terraforming mars!
Plus Long Live Cubitos!
I just know that in every comparison video Arnak is always placed below Dune. So it’s funny to see a group that clearly doesn’t enjoy Arnak call it overrated.
I enjoy your content and humor so no worries. I’m just having fun ripping on this list because I see merit in pretty much all of these games in helping the hobby whether they’re “properly” rated or not.
Tm is much better. Ark nova in comparison sucks .
