Hi Rick , Thats the best bit of info Ive seen for extending flight time by using external battery for the controller. I was very disappointed when I realised the remote wasnt able to fly the drone for more than two batteries so Im happy to have come across this info . A big thank you for that .. Bill .
Excellent suggested use of a half depleted Mavic battery. And I love is battery -> usb converter that comes with the fly more combo kit. Really excited to have this as a power bank now when I am out travelling the shores of Norway!
Excellent video! Very useful info. (PS There are a LOT of rambling Mavic Pro help videos made by amateurs. It's a pleasure to find videos that are concise, well informed and well presented).
I've used exactly this approach on the field, last March, on a visit to S. Miguel, Azores. The trip served as a "proof of concept" regarding this, as the previous one to Madeira showed me that, without the power bank and the car charger (...which I had left home...), by the end of the day there might be great scenery under great light that I would have wanted to take advantage of but I would be systematically be out of power to make a flight. I now have 5 batteries, the car charger and the power bank and, as long as there is some driving time in-between locations, I have power for both the controller and the Mavic from sun-up to sunset. I have only one last problem to sort out. This trip to Azores was for a family reunion over a weekend. My wife and kids returned home Sunday night and I stayed until the next Friday for all the Mavic activity. I had a rented car and laid out the car charger and batteries on the floor, in front of the front passenger seat. In the future, when that seat is occupied, it will be problematic to lay out charger, batteries and cables in a tidy, secure way that is also operational efficient, arriving and departing from each location.
Well, well, well. That little dude comes with the "Fly More" kit, in its own beautiful little white box, but I could never figure out what it was for. Thank you RICK! (A "fanny pack", turned into a "belly pack" is a convenient place to put that battery while it is charging the controller.) You are the MAN!
Recently encountered a 23 hour weather related power outage and that little device was a tremendous help. With a mavic battery we were able to keep the cell phones charged for emergency purposes.
Thanks again Rick an adapter had came with my Mavic fly more bundal, and I knew that I could use it for chargeing stuff, but now I know much more. I was on the verge of just putting it in drawer some where.
Thanks Rick, Always good pointers. I got my Mavic few days back (fly more combo, so it has the battery to power bank adaptor). Took it for only a couple of tests to get the hang of it and also avoid lots of restrictions here in Iraq. But this thing is packed with so much technology in so little space. Loving it.
Hello from Borneo Island, just got my mavic few days ago, and I'm using my samsung phone with the remote, it drain the remote batt fast. This tip helps a lot, so thank you so much for the info.
Hey Rick...if you find a good cable that you can hook up to the Spark RC to the iphone that works and does not create a mess....please post it here on your channel. Seems DJI did not include the cable for one reason or another. But going direct instead of wifi seems like a rock steady connection. Thanks for your time and videos. From Texas.
Thanks again for the tips, although I misunderstood your title & thought you meant charging whilst flying in a plane! I couldn't imagine any way of explaining that one and was intrigued to see how you were going to attempt it! Take care, Peter.
I think Rick is implying that is possible but will be clunky holding it. Unless the controller has software Preventing the charging while on and in operation...it should work just as with any other device. I'll try this later today (you can too); power up as usual...remote and quad...connect to app...etc...etc...connect battery bank as described and see what happens. Is everything fully functional? I'll bet yes.
On most versions of Android it will give you the option to charge the device, use as a power source, transfer files, etc. or do nothing. You can choose Always, which will then default to that setting. Reset it and you'll have the choices again. It's probably best to have it "ask every time".
Mike, I have 2 of them on order and will review them as soon as they arrive here. I did get a chance to play with them a little at the DJI event in Vegas and they look great. Be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Hi, I searched in the whole internet and couldn't find an answer. How do I charge my magic pro battery in a remote location without electricity? How can I do it with a power bank for example. Many thanks for your help.
Excellent video! My weak link is the battery duration in my i-pad mini which I believe will not attempt to draw power from the Mavic 2 controller when it needs it (?) Am I right in thinking this? If so I can use a DJI power bank adapter to charge the i-pad offline but not 'on the fly'. My i-pad went dead on me this week whilst drone in the air. Pressing the return to home button on the controller did nothing although I did re-start the i-pad for a few minutes and regained control. Your advice welcomed!
Rick, can one plug the battery bank to the RC when it's down to say 70% and then leave the bank there for as long as the RC charge does not go back to 100% and stay there? If the RC stays at 70%, can one leave the battery bank plugged in indefinitely? Some are saying the RC should not simultaneously be charged and discharged.
Rick, as far as you know any way to charge Mavic Battery with a powerbank. The controller battery really does not matter since stay up way longer than the Mavic Battery
Rick another good, insightful video. You show charging using the micro USB adapter on the side, can you also use the regular USB on the bottom of the RC? Thanks
Something you might look into is using a power tool battery with an USB adapter for charging everything including a Mavic controller. I have two 5 amp DeWalt batters and an adapter that I keep in my car along with my DeWalt impact. It's handy and we used it several times wile on vacation.
Rick, Thank you for all you do for the Mavic Pro and Drone community. I'm not finding the Mavic Battery Bank Adapter on your web-store. Can you help me get to it for perchance? Thanks again, Tony
need help any one I updated the firm ware and now when I fly, the icon in my remote control I get a blinking reciever , I have all 5 bars in a clear open field ,,please help me anyone
That's a nice little accessory, gonna have to pick one of those up. I always have 1 to 3 battery banks with me in the field to charge cameras. With this DJI dongle I could lighten my load a bit and charge cameras off low Mavic batteries since I'm already carrying them. Cool.
Rick - I really enjoy your videos, very helpful! I recently purchased a Mavic Pro. Great little drone but I'm not happy with my Samsung S7 phone or Samsung 10" pad as a display, because both these screens are difficult to see in bright sunlight. I understand DJI has recently mentioned their CrystalSky display(s) can be used with several DJI drones including the Mavic Pro. I'm considering purchasing the 7.85" CrystalSky display but I'm scratching my head as to how it would mount onto the controller. With the CrystalSky's large rear mounted battery, mounting it to generic Pad Holder is probably out of the question. I'm curious if you have any information about how the CrystalSky displays might be connected to a Mavic Pro controller? Tnx
Hello Rick, do you know DJI is telling us NOT TO USE A POWER BANK to charge the remote ? They say it could damage the «Coulometer» for the Battery indicator on the remote. Please get back to us about this WARNING DJI is showing in the FAQ. Thank's.
Thanks for the post but I'm not sure where that recommendation came from but it's nonsense. A battery bank is actually a "cleaner" power source than a wall charger since it's pure DC. There is no danger of damage and I have been using a power bank with both my Spark and Mavic remotes for as long as I've been flying them.
It's in DJI Mavic Pro (and Platinum) Support «Others» FAQ 3. Can I charge the Mavic's remote controller using a mobile power bank ? Answer : It is not recommended to charge the remote controller with a mobile power bank. This may damage the coulometer. Battery level readings for the remote controller may become incorrect, and the battery consumption speed may become greater than the charging speed. Maybe you need to verify why DJI published that FAQ ? Personnaly I have confidence in YOUR opinion, but this is getting confusing...
I'll look into it a little further but many times those FAQ's a put together by a compnay's marketing department with little regard to the technology. The term coulometer is your first clue as there isn't one in the remote control. That term is an old school way of measuring charges in batteries that has been replaced by more modern electronics. The only thing they may be worried about is a "back-charge" if the power bank you're using can't deliver enough current to charge the remote. Most power banks can deliver 2.5A of current but if you have an older one (or less expensive one) it may only supply 1.5A and may actually drain the remote instead of charging it. Make sure any one you're using can deliver at least 2.5A and you'll be fine.
Again, awesome insight, Rick. I wish you stocked these in Jersey. Dji wants another $10 just to ship. Dji has an Amazon store where they offer free shipping. I've always found buying anything direct from DJI is always a bad idea. Whether it be shipping costs or retail, they push you elsewhere to make purchases. I really wanted to support the channel so I'm bummed about that. Maybe you can mention things like this during your next interaction with DJI.(are you an official DJI reseller?)
Make sure you start out with 100% on the device. With every thing there are limitations; especially as batteries age. When you have a little down time, charge the device...10 minutes even helps a little. Also, in case you do not...kill all other apps running in the background.
Yes you are right . It doesn't charge when plugged in to the controller. wouldn't the Qi charger plug into the lightning port of the iphone - but then how would I connect to the controller. ?
The iphone per se does not have wireless charging but the Qi charger like you said can be stuck behind the phone and can sit between the cover and the phone . but to actually charge the phone the ones I see have a little plug that goes in the charge/sync port on the phone to the pass the current. with the plug of the qi charger in the port , the port isnt free to to be plugged in to anything else(cable from the controller). Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing . Would be really grateful if you could share a link of a device that can do this . Thanks so much.
Maybe someone in here can help me? - I have sort of the opposite problem, my iPhone SE gets drained from 3 flights with my mavic air. This is mainly because my phone sucks. as soon as it gets a little chilly, the battery just drops, BUT it’s also because the mavic rc doesn’t charge iPhones for some reason. So I can’t really use this trick unless using android. Would love to hear if anyone has a good’ol hack! :)
Be careful with the side input on your controller, they can break easily! A couple of times you went to put it in the wrong way, this will sooner or later ruin your day.
Thanks for the post and I appreciate the help. That connector was a goof from DJI and they should have used a polarized one that prevented you from inadvertently pushing the connector in backwards. Stay tuned for more content posting this week. Rick

It's hard to think of everything, but they're doing a pretty good job of it! Good info!

Rick, what are the 'hours' the remote controller will operate?
I get many flights (a dozen) before I have to recharge.
Thanks again for the tips, although I misunderstood your title & thought you meant charging whilst flying in a plane! I couldn't imagine any way of explaining that one and was intrigued to see how you were going to attempt it! Take care, Peter.

Well done, fantastic information
hey Rick I got a question how can I turn off the audio so you won't hear people talking in the background When fly in the mavic pro thanks
I've wondered, now I know. Thank you for the info.

If you already purchased the DJI Flymore package and didn't realize it, you will find you've already purchased this (inside the white box)!
That comes with fly more. I don't use it. Mavic batteries are expensive, power banks are cheaper and much larger capacity.
Be careful with the side input on your controller, they can break easily! A couple of times you went to put it in the wrong way, this will sooner or later ruin your day.

@@Dronevalley For sure. I wish they had used a USB C connector as the seem more solid and can go in either way.
