    Another way you can hand land the Mavic but without changing any settings is by holding out your hand as flat as possible, wait a few seconds for the sensors to pick up your hand, and bring it down. It will act as if it was on the ground and stop perfectly in place. Always look forward to seeing your videos good job.

    I can confirm that putting your finger in the blades won't slice it off but it will hurt like hell and bleed quite a bit. Still healing. Also keeping forward avoidance on should help protect from accidentally flying into your face. Luckily I don't have first hand experience with that.

    Hey Ed. I like your entertaining personality. I watch for you, even though I already know a lot about the Mavic. Just a heads up. Not sure if this was mentioned already, but I have found the easiest way to hand catch is to have it hover just above. Tell it to autoland and when it starts to come down, you put your hand under it and the motors shut off as soon as the sensors sense your hand is under it. The drone won't fight you, and you don't have to turn off any sensor. I like having all my sensors on at all times and I am sure I would forget to turn them off and on every time I hand take off and land. Cheers Bud and keep up the good work.

    Ed, love your videos on the Mavic, and I appreciate how everyone thinks landing and taking off from your hand is a cool thing, but I'm gonna be the downer guy on this video. I have flown R/C airplanes for many years, both gas and electric, and have seen and witnessed many serious injuries caused by propeller strikes. The worst injuries are when the prop contacts the inside of your forearm (a possibility when catching a drone as your forearm is exposed). The injury can be devastating, life altering (impaired use of your hand and fingers) and in some cases life threatening if you can't stop the blood loss. Also, you never want to have your face directly in line (or even slightly above) the spinning propellers. If one failed it could take out an eye in a second. I saw a guy get hit right between the eyes with a failed propeller blade, causing a nasty gash in his forehead, and he was standing 8 feet away from the prop when it failed. Having said all that, I can envision some situations where the terrain or circumstances may not be not suitable for ground launching or landing, so people who may encounter that situation may be willing to accept the risk and should practice ahead of time. Finally, I see you and other guys turning their backs on your hovering drone. That's putting a lot of faith in technology. The Mavic is a great machine, but eventually there will be a video of a hovering drone creeping up on a guy and biting him. Always keep in mind that you are the pilot of the drone, even when it's on autopilot, and you need to keep eyes on it at all times so you can take manual control if necessary. Sorry in advance, but we all hate to see people get hurt, especially when they're just trying to have some fun.

    Easy peasy! I've never turned the settings off and have caught it tons of times. It definitely tries to get away, but always shuts down after a couple seconds. ...haven't launched yet...

    Hi Ed. The 1st day that I owned the mavic I caught it the same way as you did in the end with all the sensors on. I then put the drone away. The following day when I tried to fly it, there was a weird wobble. I then calibrated the I IMU and all was good.

    You can leave the sensors on when landing in your hand. Just stick your hand out under the Mavic then do the slide to land option. It will sense your hand as a landing point then automatically turn off downward sensors and land.

    The auto land function also lets you hand land it as well which I think is easier. The auto take off is also an option, but I haven't done that. It really is nerve wracking though!

    Great stuff! Also trained alot on hand-launch and hand-catch (for kayaking this spring). Pretty straight forward just disable the vertical avoidence sensors and try to remember to enable them after launch and vice verse. Good video and this move can really save your day! (thumbs up)

  • @TomSpurlock
    @TomSpurlock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ed, nice video, but you should never grab a moving drone like you promoted in this video. Also, you should never have your fingers on the sticks while grabbing a drone either. These two things can get you injured upon your first mistake. The goal when hand catching is to minimize the possibility of making a mistake.
    Let it hover a few seconds. Walk over to it with fingers OFF THE STICKS, grab the drone just as you showed, keeping clear of the prop area. AFTER you have a firm grip on the drone, THEN touch the left stick to turn off the motors, holding the drone in place until the motors shut down.
    Also, for take off, it's easier to use auto take-off in the app, instead of pulling two stick together and throttling up with one hand. All that is done automatically with a screen click and a slide. It's much easier with one hand, and safer.

    • @ajsiemers
      @ajsiemers 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was gonna comment on this after "you should never"....but you're completely right...it's safer the way you described and easier too. No surprises and I do it a lot when I'm walking with my dogs as they will try to catch the drone as soon as the props start spinning. They're not too bright and I don't want to have them find out the hard way not to mess with spinning props

    Curious to know, have you filmed a video taking off and landing on a sailboat? That may be content you might possibly want to vlog about. I launch from a Iroquois Catamaran once in a while out on the Chesapeake, it’s tricky. Return to home is not a feature you want your drone to perform, lol.

    Nice work! Actually, you can go down on one knee(the right knee, if launching from your right hand), which gives you the choice of resting the controller and iPad on your left thigh. Also, you can use "auto launch" instead of doing a csc.

    A little tip.
    Don't go full stick down in sports mode at night time and think it will slow before landing. mine just smashed into the ground. Its all good tho :) But that is something I was not ready for. I thought the ultrasound sensors work in the dark but only on gps mode, not sports.
    If its night time just flick it back into gps mode before landing to be safe :)

    What I have found out to catch a Mavic is on its way down pause it and and put it on sport mode and it will disable all the sensors and then catch it.

  • @JoannaForbes1
    @JoannaForbes1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did my first hand catch the other day. Was on a hillside covered in deep heather and no where safe to land. Left all the sensors on. The Mavic is a powerful wee beastie.

  • @2fast2beat36
    @2fast2beat36 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I heard that if you turn on sport mode it disables some of the sensors and allows for an easier hand catch. Not sure but might be worth a try as well. Not sure how sensitive the joysticks would be though.

  • @findingjoe
    @findingjoe 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just swipe to takeoff from my hand a little easier to manipulate the controls than trying to press both joysticks together.

    @WadeHartley 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I made a video on my channel showing the hand catch and launch some of the ways other people were describing in the comments without turning off the sensors. The Mavic is so cool I'm glad it seems you're having as much fun with it as I am :)

  • @WIDGET738
    @WIDGET738 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You're doing the "all sensors on" method incorrectly, Ed. With everything enabled under the sensor section, you can hand land (not catch) it. Simple. Position the Mavic in front of you at chest level (or lower when you get the hang of it). Hold out your hand; palm open, facing up and place it a foot or so below the Mavic... Mavic will raise up about 16 inches. Now pull down on the throttle stick & it will LAND in your hand... Motors shut off, close hand to grasp. Easy as heck & not much risk. I hold my controller with 1 hand & don't use my body like you did here. That seems precarious.

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh thanks for the tip! Appreciate the feedback, I'll try that next time.

    • @MrPatCummins
      @MrPatCummins 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. There are much easier ways to catch in your hand like what Google User described. That way you can keep all your sensors on and don't have to remember to reenable them the next time you fly.

    • @WIDGET738
      @WIDGET738 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep & having those motors run at 110% for the 3 seconds from GRABBING it out of the air will cause unnecessary long-term wear. And prop tips running at 500mph at that motor RPM would probably hurt your face.

    • @KaitlynMcLachlan
      @KaitlynMcLachlan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haven't tried this method yet, but it would seem like this increases the risk of the blades hitting your forearm? Or what about it tipping off your hand when it auto-lads on to it?

    • @MrPatCummins
      @MrPatCummins 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kaitlyn McLachlan when it auto lands in your hand, you just grab it once it hits your hand and hold it steady. It's really easy and much safer overall because the motors don't spin up to take off again.

  • @AlexK-ei7yh
    @AlexK-ei7yh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    try catching it in sport mode, i think obstacle avoidance is turned off then. also, try turning on the propellers and then gently move your hand up and down until the drone "tries to get away from you" and then simpy release it.

  • @cdn_badger
    @cdn_badger 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! I've yet to try this myself... Weather here has been crap since I got my Mavic about a month ago.
    I've also seen someone land the Mavic in their hand without disabling some of the sensors. Bring it in around 10 feet, put your hand out under the Drone and hold it there. This gives the Drone a landing surface. Then just let it land.
    What I'd like to know is... can you program one of the Extra Buttons on the back of the controller, to do the take off sequence?

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting thought there...I don't believe so, but they should totally allow us to program a button like that!

    I was curious about this, because in the summer time I'm on the water a lot! landing on a jetski or a boat doesn't seem like an easy thing to do! I guess if your on the water flying you don't need the obstacle avoidance on, making it easier to catch in your hand. Again thank you for being my Mavic guinepig, the only thing I haven't been a fan of was the prop guards, I mean there great for what there needed for, but the weight and how it changes how it flies.... I dunno about that... they need to make lighter, and fix that peice that hangs out that can get caught on.... then I'd be interested in having them. Have you tried fpv yet? I guess you can only do it with the Litchi app.... but I'm super curious how that would feel... I have goggles from ebay, but VR makes me feel sick.... but want to try it... anyways thanks bro :)

    Hi Ed, do what you did in the second part of your video clip, i.e. all Mavic sensors on.
    Then bring the Mavic down to a height where you can comfortably grab the Mavic, let it hover, forget the RC, grab the Mavic tightly from below and immediately turn it upside down.
    The motors will stop instantly.
    You could actually film this.
    Just remember that you read this trick here first...

    Like your channel my fellow North Carolinian! I'm in Raleigh, but am very familiar with your area of the state. I'll probably get this drone in the future, still new to the GPS tech and such. Need a lot more familiarity and practice before I sink this kinda cash into this hobby, although for you it's a business so I totally understand. Keep up the good work with your vids! You've got a good and rare sense of humor, you remind me of Monty Python! Cheers!

      I have a Hubsan X4 H501S which is perfect for getting me familiar with drones and GPS and such. Not interested in FPV racing or sport flying. I'd rather do quality videos of aerial photography over various landscapes, and the Hubsan is great to get me trained for it. When I'm better I'll spring for the more high quality drones. I really like the DJI Mavic, so thanks for presenting it as you have: from the perspective of a newbie progressing to a more advanced pilot!

    Hey! Anybody here has ever succesfully launched the mavic pro from a moving boat and hand landed it in the same situation? I know the on board reporters of the Volvo ocean race can fly the phantom 4 in 40 knots winds. They take off and land the drone form a fast moving sailboat, supported by a sailor (who grabs the drone for them). But the mavic is smaller and lighter...any chance to do that? If yes would you switch off the sensors?

      Hey Ed! Compared to the hobby of cameras and instruments it's actually not that bad. You could build one "non gps" for about $300 easy. Since the frames are pretty stout the only thing you will go through are props and the occasional "ESC". If you can avoid crashing into water they can take a pretty good beating lol. But they are sooo much fun, and fly super fast!

      I don't agree, taking off / landing the Mavic on you hand is like peeling an apple with a sharp knife, you just have to be careful at your own risk. Also, you can use sunglasses and a yellow kitchen glove for more safety if you want, then forget messing up your Mavic direclty on dirty grounds! This procedure is very addictive, once you try, you'll never stop!

    Glad you still have all ten fingers. I also noticed you're not the guy to skip arm day.
