Ginger Growing from Store-Bought Ginger Roots!

  • Ginger root is an incredible addition to almost all styles of cuisine, and it's surprisingly easy to grow. There are a few different methods you can use, all of which work well. Some people just cut pieces of ginger, making sure a few eyes are on each piece and plant directly.
In this video, we are going to be growing ginger from the store by starting it off in bowls of water. Once new shoots and roots start developing from the growth nodes, we can either plant them directly in the soil, or snap them off and plant those pieces directly into the soil.
Growing ginger in containers is easy, too - it loves a nutrient-rich, moist soil and plenty of sun. So long as you give it those two things, it'll grow vigorously and will be ready to harvest about ~4 months from planting.
In a perfect world, you'd plant ginger in the spring for a fall harvest, but depending on your climate you can get away with either a shorter or longer growing season.

Yeah I love that. I once saw a TH-camr (with waaaay fewer subscribers than this guy) reply to someone's comment about his long, rambling video that the TH-cam advertising system promotes and encourages content creators to make longer videos. Because of that he said he was never going to shorten his videos and remove all the fluff. Nice to see that some people make content that they think people will actually enjoy.

Grown ginger last year in a 2 X 4 foot raised bed. Planted about 8 rhizome pieces. I now have more ginger than I know what to do with. Given a lot of it away, but still have probably 20 lbs still in the ground. Very easy to grow here in Georgia. Lots of water, well draining soil, and shade from the hot summer sun. Good luck to everyone.

One thing to keep in mind is that the edible part of the ginger plant is a rhizome, not a tuber or a root. Rhizomes grow best only partially buried, or buried very shallowly.

I am currently growing my ginger (from store bought rhyzomes) entirely indoors, just in pots with no extraordinary care. I keep the soil moist but not too moist as it will rot. The growth seems to be cyclical. Sometimes I can see new shoots (like right now) and sometimes it seems to die back. Last time it died back, I decided that was it and started to dig everything up and out when I unearthed some new little shoots that were green and just starting to grow. OOPS! I carefully put the little shoots back in the pot and they are doing nicely now. When we stayed at a VRBO in Costa Rica, the yard had ginger and lemon grass growing and we dug up a little of each every day for suppers. I like keeping my tall ginger on a table at my front picture window and looking through it like I'm in the jungle, the mighty jungle. 😆❤️👍🏻🌱🌱🌱 Oh. And I have lemongrass growing in a pot that I grew from store bought lemongrass. The lemongrass seems to be a bit slower to create new plants than the ginger.

    • @epicgardening

This looks amazing, and you got right to the point without 1-2 minutes of useless intro. Bravo!
Questions: (1) While the ginger is in the water, what temperature should it be? I read that 77F is an ideal soil temperature for ginger, so I'm keeping the water at that temp. (2) While the ginger is in the water, does it need darkness? Ambient light? A lot of light like a grow light? Maybe it needs a lot of light but only after it sprouts?
Thanks again for a great video!
