Great vid, fell in love with these guys myself after buying the last large one in the shop… now I’m addicted and want more 😂 would love some more in depth videos of their behaviour/ care if you can. You’re right not many people seem to keep them.

That's awesome! They are one of the favorites in our fish room... Althought we probably say that about all of our fish, haha! We are hoping to be able to sell some of their offspring soon, and hopefully that'll help to get them on some more people's radars! But we absolutely plan on making another video about them, because like you, we are also Keyhole addicts!

How long did it take for the keyholes to get as big as the ones you have? I have two and it seems like they grow so slow.

I am trying to think back to when I first got them. If I remember correctly, these are a little over a year old at this point. I wasn't trying to power grow them so you can probably get them bigger faster.

How many keyholes are acceptable for a 30g community with small tetras, cories and is heavily planted?

You might be able to do a pair or a small group to start. Once they get full grown I wouldn't keep them in anything smaller than a 40g, as shown here. You might have different experience but in this size tank my group are to outgoing and territorial to keep tetras in the same tank. If I had them in a 75g it would probably work. I did have some red eye monk tetras in with them for a while and they just got too stressed out and I had to remove them. They dont mess with my pleco and catfish though.

This fish looks plain at first glance, but it has a good personality and is very cute.

Do they prefer a dark substrate ?

They do fine on any color. I think their colors pop a bit more against a dark substrate. Sorry for the delayed response 😂

Did your keyhole breed ? Did you get any frys?

We have had them lay fertilized eggs a few different times since making this video, but each time, the eggs have been eaten after about a day. We are currently trying to determine why or who is eating the eggs. We could pull the eggs and hatch them ourselves (so to speak), but we have our fry tank down right now due to our big fish room “remodel”. We hope to be able to have little baby keyholes soon though!

@@LotsaAlgae Let me know if you need any help. I had two pair of keyhole who were able to lay eggs and fertilized. One of the pair passed away yesterday, so your video brought me joy.
I am thinking of putting together last pair into its own aquarium with filled with drift wood and jungle val, and green plants to hide their shyness.
If you figure it out and able to get frys, I would like to buy some from you!

@@spicymaple7069 That’s awful, I’m so sorry to hear that! I’m glad this video was able to lift your spirits a little bit! I think we will be having an update video on this tank coming out next week, which can hopefully once again help to take your mind off your loss.
And thank you for offering your help! They’ve taken care of their eggs in the past to the point of becoming fry (and then the were eaten by bigger fish, hence their own breeding tank), so we really aren’t sure why they would be eating the eggs now. But we have gotten fry from pulling the eggs away in the past, so we may just have to take that route moving forward. We’ve not shipped any fish yet, but I’ll make sure to do an update when we get fry. Feel free to contact us, and we can try to figure out a way to get them to you.
Also, I’m sure your pair is going to love their new tank! ❤️
