I had mentioned to my boyfriend now that we are living out in the rural area we should get some chicken laying eggs someday.... SOMEDAY. About a week later he walked out of tractor supply and put a box of four 3 day old chickens on my lap. I said "what in the heck am I going to do with these, I know nothing about them!?" Marched him right back in to buy all of the necessities. I almost re-homed them a few times because I doubted myself. It's now 5 weeks later and I can't even tell you how in love I am! He just made them the most amazing big girl house yesterday with runs and ladders etc. I sat out there for hours like an excited nervous mother waiting for them to use their new ladder bc I didn't want to miss it! They are four black ones with a couple lighter spots on them that I cannot identify for the life of me!? Three are quite large and one is the runtish and I just adore her she's my sweet girl. We seem to bond over a few pasty butts removal sessions. Lol Love your channel subscribing now! You're the best. 😁🐓🐔🐥💗

Will be much fun to teach but also i worried alot.Im planning to free the bird later when it become adult
You are awesome, kind, compassionate and it's hard to find a person who give the best to animals. Glad you are happy and your chickens are happy as well.
So glad someone feels the same way as me! I got chickens this June and can't believe the joy they've brought to my life. We had a fun game this summer... I expanded garden beds by laying sacs of soil on the earth for a few weeks to kill the grass. When I eventually come to lift the bags off the earth, it's a chicken buffet under there. Thinking about starting a vermicomposter this winter to give them some fresh protein. Thanks for sharing this amazing advice! I'll be trying it with crumble.
I've had pretty good sucess with fermented feed (pellet form) the only time they didn't like it was when I let it ferment too long (5 or more days). If I let it go too long I think it gets too sour for their liking. I drain mine through cheese cloth laid in a strainer once the liquid stops draining I gather the edges of the cloth together and twist the ball of ferment to further drain the liquid. Once I get it to the consistency of moist sand I put it in mason jars and refrigerate what I don't use to slow spoilage. I can't say how long it could last in the fridge as it is usually gone within a few days I've never stored it more than a week. I was told by the farmer that showed me the process not to freeze the ferment as they thought it changed the texture or taste because their chickens wouldn't eat much of the frozen stuff even after it thawed to room temp. Sometimes I collect some of the drained liquid and add it to the next batch to speed up the next ferment.
@@friedmansfresh Yes,,, I ferment Tractor Supply brand layer feed works fine. You'll notice black particles that settle out once the pellets turn to mush that is the iron they add to the feed it is. Perfectly safe to leave in the ferment.
I used to ferment the feed for my chickens and geese but got out of the habit because I didn’t know anyone else doing it but this just reminded me how healthy it really is. I’m going to start fermenting feed again!!
Me, too! I fermented their pellet feed in a 5 gallon 🪣 in the kitchen over the winter of '20-'21, but then sorta forgot about the whole idea. I realized recently that I didn't do it last winter, but wanted to start doing it again. After watching this, I don't think I was using enough water before!
With fermented food, what if they do not eat it all in the same sitting, will the chickens and geese come back to it later? Also, how does this work in the winter--doesn't the food become cold and / or frozen?
@@sadiebeast97 well, it took me a while but you get to know approx how much they eat. I go out at sundown to cover the food that may be left and cover the waterer so it doesn't freeze.

One of my chickens ended up with heart failure (water belly), and I was wondering if it possibly had to do with the salt from the water softener, since I was using the house water (well) to make their fermented feed. I'm now using water from the barn instead just in case. I have to thank you for making my organic feed go so much further. Saves so much money and you don't have to refill their water as often, which is great, too! Your advice changed my life. ;[)
Oh my goodness you are so welcome. Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m so sorry about the loss of your chicken. I really doubt it had anything to do with the water. More likely it was due to how production breeds are bred. They are just bred to lay lay lay which is awesome, but also can cause issues. I have 2-3 chickens that like to work where ever I am and I notice they really loved the seeds that were falling and they would jump up to eat the seeds from the plants. I made up bundles and hung in the chicken coop to dry and would drop a bundle down about every week. they loved it, gave them something to do on the really bad snow/ice days.

This was very interesting to watch. It is the third of your videos that I have watched this evening. My sister has a flock of baby chickens, you see, and she sent me some pictures of them. She then mentioned that she is going to grow sprouts and ferment feed. I thought I need to learn more about this. I really like the way you present in this video. You show all the essential steps and each key step in the process is shown with a "thumbs up". All the steps are simple. You also show feeding the fermented product to the flock. Thank you for a truly excellent video. I understand the goals of providing fermented feed better now.
I heard of one guy that mixes whole grains into a compost pile with an ongoing earth worm population in the pile. He lets the chickens scratch for sprouts, seeds worms, bugs, and keeps churning the pile until part spent, then adds more weeds, etc to the pile with grains until it is nearly ready to use as compost, then he uses part of the old pile as a starter for a new one. Cost is very low. He says he spends less than a hundred dollars per year for what looks like about 30 chickens.
I happened upon this video by complete chance and I could not agree more with your message at the end about the joy of chickens ❤️ my chicken girls bring me SO much joy!
I’ve tried fermenting their grain and seed mix a couple times and they did not like it. I was so bummed because I sprout and ferment a lot. They don’t care for sprouts and micro greens either. But, I made them an herb garden with wheatgrass and they love it! I plant a tray indoors and let it grow for a 2-3 weeks and let them go to town. I have three trays in rotation. Their fave herbs are lemon balm and peppermint. I also feed them rosemary and thyme.
Love it. I just tried it only ferment for 2 nights. Ferment the chicken feed+dried rolled oat. My 4weeks chicks love it. Thanks heaps wish you all the best and success and happy chickens

We are also moving to a farm the old occupant cant leave fast enough we are getting a 2 bedroom 1 bath on almost 15 acres I never dreamed I would have so much land the fenced in barn is bigger then my house we are also starting with chickens and a cart donkey we are doing tractor coops so we can debug more land and use the donkey to pull the coops
@@ivyb4351 Guess it depends on where you live. I haven't found that to be the case in my area......but I'm pretty rural. Average price right now for pullets is $3-5 in my area. Just assumed it was that way everywhere. However, it does cost more to feed them through winter.
You are an angel and the chickens know that! I'm like you but my flock is smaller. You can't possibly explain how much time, care and love (let alone money) you put in for your babies to your friends because they think you're crazy, but as you correctly said that the joy and happiness you get from interacting with them is priceless and instant no matter how much life lets you down that day!
You made me today happy to be a chicken lover, I am blessed different than you as living in Queensland Australia, we have no real winter to speak of, 52F, we don't have to take our chickens to bed. Ha Ha Thank you.
I have 11 assorted hens and a very sweet rooster. They are "spoiled rotten" and super healthy, because I did my research and learned about fermenting grains. (I was raised on a ranch, but our chicken flock was large and they were not pets at all. My folks 'soaked' grain -mostly oats- 24 hrs for the chickens but never longer, so didn't reap the nutrient boost and digestive benefits of fermentation. I didn't care for "chicken chores" as a kid, but I love my little flock now.)
Also i heard if a batch starts to smell, meaning possible bad bacteria has been building up, you can use raw apple cedar vinegar to kill all the bad strands and get it back to normal.
Love this video! Especially the part when you say they bring so much joy in your life 🥰 I feel the same. Chickens are so interesting, cute and useful. I ferment mine’s feed too. They look so healthy!

@@WelcometoChickenlandia I know this was an old video and I am trying to catch up with all this great content. Thank you for your response and instruction President of Chickenlandia 😂
Love the intro. Question, if fermenting feed is better for efficiency then why haven't any of the big egg producers picked up the method? (I'm referring to the UK and Western Europe here, I'm not sure what the status quo is over in the USA/Canada). Since obviously feed cost is even more important in a commercial setting, if this change can half the feed bill then one would imagine it'd be well worth the extra labour required.
I can’t really speak for the big commercial houses but I imagine in that setting it actually isn’t more cost effective. It’s messier, too, so it would require cleaning of the equipment daily, etc. I just don’t think it would work in a factory setting. But I have seen large pasture raised farms with good practices do it and they love it!
I am always confused about how much to feed my girls. They eat alot, so I would love to try this. Once it is fermented, how much should I allow per bird?
With fermented feed, I would start with 1/4 cup per standard chicken, and see if they finish it by the afternoon. If not, give a little bit less. You want them to finish it by the afternoon time in the warmer months and then give them a small snack in the evening during the colder months.
I have 5 birds and I do 3 cups dry- I ferment for the 3 days and then pour it on the compost pile and they eat it. There is some left but I have found that they go back in the afternoon/evening and help turn the pile and look for whatever is left
Is it correct that you stir the bottle once a day but don’t change the water? Also does all the water get absorbed by the 3rd day or did you pour it out?
Letting water sit for 24 hrs. will allow the chlorine to off-gas, but the fluoride remains. Spring water, well water, rain water, or distilled water is the way to go.
I have chickens and ducks and a family of 7 people. We've really been struggling with inflation prices. I truly appreciate this video. I just started 3 jars of feed on my kitchen counter. Thank you so much!

Thank you for your video. I have watched many videos about fermenting feed for chickens. And they had so many components to it that it was something I felt was to much hastle. Your video made it very clear to me how it should be done. Thank you
So happy I came across your channel. You and your chickens are adorable. Thank you for sharing your passion 💕
I’m late to this party but I started fermenting some feed and gave them one feeding of dry and one of fermented. Now they ignore the dry feed and pester me for the fermented stuff 😱 These girls are so spoiled 😂🐓🤣
You are awesome! Not because of saving us money but because you enjoy and LOVE your chickens AS MUCH AS I DO!!!
I'm moved by how much you appreciate being lucky in life and share it with others. Thank you ;)

You are so welcome!
Do you post them on ig? I too want to have chicken but still afraid and clueless about the mess. Now i got baby bird from a friend, it's a rescued baby bird. Luckily the bird is omnivore type. I blend oat, and other seed, put little bit or dry fruit and mix them with banana when i feed it. Now my head is full on how to educate it to be able to take dust bath and learn to find food. Will be much fun to teach but also i worried alot.Im planning to free the bird later when it become adult
Why not married?
It's been 3 years, how are you doing with your chickens?! 😊
You are awesome, kind, compassionate and it's hard to find a person who give the best to animals. Glad you are happy and your chickens are happy as well.
Thank you so much!
You're so welcome!
Not only your chickens look happy, your joy is also evident, the passion you convey your knowledge is awesome
Thanks
You’re so welcome!
You are a wonderful ambassador for chicken keeping! And a kind person as well.
You ferment pellets? Wondering bc I "cut" my scratch and peck with cheaper pellets due to costs and not sure I could ferment that mixture.
@@friedmansfresh Yes,,, I ferment Tractor Supply brand layer feed works fine. You'll notice black particles that settle out once the pellets turn to mush that is the iron they add to the feed it is. Perfectly safe to leave in the ferment.
@@friedmansfresh I was told you can ferment all pellets except medicated chick starter.
Me too! I've been fermenting whole field peas, barley and oats. They've been happy on it.
@@sadiebeast97 well, it took me a while but you get to know approx how much they eat. I go out at sundown to cover the food that may be left and cover the waterer so it doesn't freeze.
How much do you feed per chicken, approximately? Especially of the fermented mix?
Brand new chicken mama with 3 baby’s and I’m definitely going to give this a go! Thankyou so much!

Thanks for posting! You are so sweet brought joy to my day watching this.
I do 3 5 gallon buckets of fermented feed for my birds. Each bucket goes to chickens, goats and my sheep. Every 5 days i start new buckets etc.
Can I do a 5 gallon bucket like the video showing using a jar? Thanks
You’re a good chicken parent and your flock is lucky to have you!
That’s a great question I was wondering that also I have a water softener on my well
Britta filter
A vet told us to always filter well water for the cats and dogs. We filter all the house water and we do have a salt water softener too
as chicken keeper i confirm: chickens are a lot of joy, the end made me really happy, i will try this for my girls! We got 7 chickens and we give them layer feed and scratch maybe 50,50 of each. Should I ferment some feed , they also get scraps from our vegetable garden also . Thanks for the great tips. 😀🐔
I ferment my chicken feed too, everyone thinks I'm crazy. But it's so much better for them, they just love it!
Right?! They really do love it and it's so good for them!
We live in the PNW as well and just started our journey with a flock. We have both chickens and ducks that follow my 12 year old daughter all over the place. Thank you for the idea. I didn't know I can do this to help it stretch out our feed. Totally going to try this.
Yay!!
Thank you! We love our chickens too. I never thought of fermentation of their food. We use it ourselves why not our pets! Great tutorial!
I can see how beautiful your chicken’s plumage is. This really contributes to their good health. Thank you!
For some reason I have this strong desire to get chickens. I don’t understand it! So needless to say, I’m doing some research while I think about it. This is my first video of yours I’ve watched. I immediately subscribed at the end of it. Great video! Very educational, entertaining, and fun! Brought joy to me and I don’t even own chickens yet! 😂 I’m looking forward to watching more from you. Thank you. 💜
Yay!! They will change your life. They certainly did that for me!
I’m going on 10 years of having hens. I never in a million years would have thought I would have them. If you get some, read up on different breeds. They have different laying amounts and temperaments. They are fun and funny and bring a calm to me after a stressful day. I’ve raised all of mine from a few days old. The only drawback is finding someone to take care of them if I want to go out of town.
@@ChickenTender57 its good to cultivate friends you can trust within the vicinity who can house/pet look after each others properties, when one is away/sick/in town. Another option we've taken at longer times friend/family from further come to stay - they call it country farm retreat 😂 At these times I preset feeders with dry food & place extra water etc., making everything easier.
@@charitytanel8107 I had someone. I would take care of her hens and she would take care of mine until she moved. We’re not in a farming community and finding someone reliable is difficult but I’m still looking!

I recently moved to the PNW and just bought my first flock of little chicks. They’ve already brought joy into our lives. They are so silly and cute. So naturally I’ve been binge watching videos on feed for chickens into the am. Trying to absorb as much as possible so we can have healthy and happy chickens.
That is very nice I am a big fan of fermented foods in every way I think this is a very positive way to feed animals. Many happy meals ahead.
Last fall I was cleaning up an area that had a lot of aster in it.
"Everyone deserves the joy of chickens." 😂😂😂♥️♥️♥️ So true!! I got my first chickens a little more than two months ago. Absolutely love them and they are so entertaining. Everyone should have chickens. 😉 What an enjoyable and happy video!
Thank you!!!
Omg yes i never knew how entertaining and therapeutic they could be! 🐣🐓😉

My 2 year old son was watching this video with me and said, “oh mama, she is so pretty.” 😍 Isn’t that sweet!? Keep it up, pretty lady!
I know exactly who you are talking about I think! It’s a wonderful system and very sustainable.
I'd like to learn more about this process
@@lalylaly27 I think they are referring to edible acres

Love your videos! I just tried the fermented feed on my chickens and they LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!❣
I’ve tried fermenting their grain and seed mix a couple times and they did not like it.
Wow! I have a hard time getting mine to eat herbs unless they are mixed in their ferment!
Hahahahahah... you are so entertaining. Thank you very much for your unique style of education.
They are so beautiful birds 😍
Very nice Buddies ! Super smart birds !
Love it. I just tried it only ferment for 2 nights. Ferment the chicken feed+dried rolled oat. My 4weeks chicks love it. Thanks heaps wish you all the best and success and happy chickens

Okay, I get it! It's a lot like making saurkraut or Kefir, or yogurt. Gives me courage to once again try keeping chickens! I Really enjoy chickens!
Is it also possible to ferment the feed from the market?
Thankyou, I must try this.
I have 2 girls, and they are the joy of my life. They have taught me how to speak 'Chicken' and I've taught them English, because they're French...so adorable ☺️ 🐔
If you take a spoon or two of fermented “juice” from a previous batch it’s ready overnight.
We just bought a semi-rural acre south of DFW, which they are leaving their coop for us!
So in about a month or so we can start. Maybe spring, whatever works.
Looking forward to adding a weedyard for them to free range a lot more than now.
And this is how we plan to feed, too.
Thank you!
Cool! I grew up in Duncanville. 😃
If you start your chickens now, you'll have eggs up to your elbows by spring. ;-)
@@adm6785 pullets are cheaper in the spring
@@ivyb4351 Guess it depends on where you live. I haven't found that to be the case in my area......but I'm pretty rural. Average price right now for pullets is $3-5 in my area. Just assumed it was that way everywhere. However, it does cost more to feed them through winter.
Loved this video, and I feel the same way about my feathered girls! My hubby says that in his NEXT life, he wants to come back as one my hens! Lol.
LOL I've been told that as well!
For crumbles it takes 1 day
You are an angel and the chickens know that! I'm like you but my flock is smaller. You can't possibly explain how much time, care and love (let alone money) you put in for your babies to your friends because they think you're crazy, but as you correctly said that the joy and happiness you get from interacting with them is priceless and instant no matter how much life lets you down that day!
Thank you so much!
Tell me why I love your videos lol … 😍 really enjoy listening to you and seeing you smile.
Chickens really are very enjoyable. Thank you for this video. God bless you. I love my chickens too.
❤️❤️❤️
I never ever comment!!!! But, thank you thank you thank you. I feel the same way about my hens.
You are so welcome!
Love this video! Especially the part when you say they bring so much joy in your life 🥰 I feel the same. Chickens are so interesting, cute and useful. I ferment mine’s feed too. They look so healthy!
They are wonderful little creatures, aren't they? Yours sound very lucky to have you.
Whole oats are also good. And when dropped on the ground they germinate, giving chicken some grass to play with.
Also, whole oats will sprout
I am here for all the chicken-related-goodness but I also want to say that I love your glasses!
I am so happy to find your channel. You tell us hoe to do everything ourselves. And inexpensively. Thank you! My little grandson helps me with our chickens. He adores them.
I was unexpectedly gifted 6 laying hens but I have never raised chickens before. Do you feed them this fermented food 2 times a day plus keep dry food down all the time? I am thrilled to have found your channel. I love your positivity and commitment you have for your flock 🥰
When I did this video I was supplementing with fermented food but now I feed them only fermented in the morning, plus some kitchen scraps in the afternoon. :)
I love your energy ❤❤ Im trying to start urban farming on veryyyy little money so thanks!
You got this!!!
Wow!! Some fancy birds you got! So very beautiful and HEALTHY they look!!
And I love seeing how much you enjoy them 😍
Thank you!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia is that 1/4 a cup before it is fermented or after.
@@giantpaws After! :-)
Is it correct that you stir the bottle once a day but don’t change the water? Also does all the water get absorbed by the 3rd day or did you pour it out?
Letting water sit for 24 hrs. will allow the chlorine to off-gas, but the fluoride remains. Spring water, well water, rain water, or distilled water is the way to go.
any unsterile water is invitation to contamination as they contain living organisms in them...
