    Lyrics:
Can't see nothin' in front of me
Can't see nothin' coming up behind
Make my way through this darkness
I can't feel nothing but this chain that binds me
Lost track of how far I've gone
How far I've gone, how high I've climbed
On my back's a sixty pound stone
On my shoulder a half mile of line
Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight
    Left the house this morning
    Bells ringing filled the air
I was wearin' the cross of my calling
On wheels of fire I come rollin' down here
Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight
There's spirits above and behind me
Faces gone black, eyes burnin' bright
May their precious blood bind me
Lord, as I stand before your fiery light
I see you Mary in the garden
In the garden of a thousand sighs
There's holy pictures of our children
Dancin' in a sky filled with light
May I feel your arms around me
May I feel your blood mix with mine
A dream of life comes to me
Like a catfish dancin' on the end of my line
Sky of blackness and sorrow (a dream of life)
Sky of love, sky of tears (a dream of life)
Sky of glory and sadness (a dream of life)
Sky of mercy, sky of fear (a dream of life)
Sky of memory and shadow (a dream of life)
Your burnin' wind fills my arms tonight
Sky of longing and emptiness (a dream of life)
Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life
Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight

Whomever yelled out to Bruce on 9/11 "Bruce, we need you"!: I thank you, also!

The people like me who were around in the 60 and the 70s. To be lucky enough to grow up with Bruce Springsteen in our hearts and in our heads. We where and we still are the luckiest people in the universe. I always believed that you can find your own meaning in some songs. And come on up for the rising is one of those songs. I close my eyes and I see our heroes the police and fire man and woman. Going into the world trade center. With 60 pounds of Stone on my back is a oxygen tank. I can go on with what I see in this masterpiece. But real Bruce fans know what I mean.

Born in the 90s but raised with some good music. Attended many concerts from older artists, including the Eagles, Manfred Mann, the Scorpions and so much more (Golden Earring, 10+ times and had the honor to meet their drummer). Had the honor to see the Boss 3 times, and it's just another level: the best live artist in history imho

He is the most unbelievable artist. First song I ever heard from Brucey was like 1988 when I was 6. Hungry Heart. I was sold forever. Thank you Boss. This is brilliant. So good at explaining the song, it's one of my favourites x

I’ve always loved this album both for its quality as well for what it meant at the time it came out. Hearing this storytelling however, has given it a completely new meaning. Deep, very deep. I always find another reason to admire you a little bit more if that’s possible Bruce. Your way of writing music and being with us through your music and writing every step of the way amazes me. Writing this after getting tix for the Barcelona concert after 4 years of waiting for this moment to come. I don’t need to lay my hands on yours, they’ve always been there, ever since I met you. Thank you Bruce, you don’t know how much you mean to me

Down the rabbit hole. Came here cuz of his re release of the rising. I knew the background but for the Boss to describe feelings that words alone evoke...amazing.

Bruce, as your son wears his new uniform in "The Rising" I pray for angels to surround him and always keep him safe. I pray for your heart to be filled with Love. I pray for all of us to be ready when the true Rising occurs.

I love how he explains the song in the context of universal truths and experience. I just always took it literally as about 9/11 -- which is never once mentioned in his description and yet, it works on both levels. That whole album is a masterpiece.

The song is about and was written about 9/11. More specific, a FDNY firefighter responding to the World Trade Center on that horrible morning. However, as the years go - people forget. Obviously the song has taken a new meaning for Bruce. But originally, both Into the Fire and The Rising were about the FDNY and 9/11.

It’s taken me almost two decades. But at this point I’d put the song itself in my top 3 of his songs and the album right up there with Darkness. Just in terms of what they’ve come to mean to me. Empty Sky is a another tremendous song that also sums up the feelings many had after 9/11 and still resonates with me.

It always sounded to me from the point of a firefighter climbing the smoke filled stairwell in the towers. Then he suddenly finds himself surrounded by holy things, in this case heaven.

If you consider Dream of Life by Alan Watts while listening to The Rising, it takes on the description Bruce gives, and the line about “ a catfish on the end of my line” kind of blows your mind with joy.
I had thought the rock reference was to Sisyphus. Camus had a different take on that myth. There is a Ted Talk about it.
