I am from Monahans and to me Guy was wrong about this song. To me it is his best song in terms of emotion and kindness.
I'm closing in on 80 and just recently heard this song. It hit me to the core. Brought tears to my eyes. Life is that way. The closer you get to the end the more you realize it is the memories that keep you going. I have a small box of momentos that I look at from time to time. They are from my military career, my youth, and other times in my life. I listen to this song at least once a day. As Jimmy Bufffet said about life "some of it's tragic, some of it's magic but it's been a good life all the way."
Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸 Hopefully there's more runway left for us...grateful to still be here! Rediscovering Lyle! 😊
I’m getting up there too. Your comment brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for the thoughts.
They were specially talented people....long before their time .......Guy, Townes, Jerry Jeff, Blaze, Steve Earle, Rodney and Willie.....Texas music was the epitome of originality.
And that is the "short" list. Robert Earl, Jimmie Dale, Butch Hancock, Blaze, Joe Ely, Calvin Russell, Willis Allen Ramsey, Marcia Ball, Doug Sahm, Billy Joe Shaver, so many more. There is something in the Texas water that no other state can even come close to.
I am so glad I left that shithole, NY to move to Austin in 1980.
Nanci Griffith needs to be on this list & ghost writer James K Priest
Best part of Texas.
A not well enough appreciated musical genius. Lyle Lovett an artist.
My Favorite Musician...MR.Lyle Lovett!!!!!!
Just saw Lyle with the Large Band with Mavis Staples @ the Wolf Trap in Virginia. I've seen Lyle 5 times now. What stands out above all with Lyle is he is a true gentleman. His pastor was there that night and he spent a time talking about him and his wife and how much they had done for him and their dedication to training chaplains for the military. Lyles one of the good guys and someone I would be proud to know. He also has one hell of a sense of humor and is a wicked good story teller.
Saw Lyle at the Wolftrap, Birchmere, in Norfolk, Carpenter Center in Richmond, in Bozeman, MT and a few other places. He never disappoints between his music, humour and stories. He’ll always be a favourite of mine...
A legend in his own time
So glad him and another living legend John Hiat toured for awhile together. Simple quality thru and true and when they rock they do it well.
Thank you Mr Lovett.
Lyle Lovett, I knew you were a star the second I first heard you @ Mr. Gattis's in College Station. You never get old. Steve & I both think you are FABULOUS because you are! Juanita & Steve Baker, San Angelo, TX.
When I hear singer/songwriters like Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett, it's clear that some people are ordained at birth to be the writers of songs and the interpreters of songs. Masterful song and masterful performance.
John Prine and Guy Clark on a Porch singing in Heaven.
I see this guy often where i work. Born and raised where he was too, right down the street. Humble dude. Im young and he probably doesnt know i know who he is but i just treat him like anybody else. Real nice dude. Introduced himself and told me about his upbringings and even asked about mine. Great customer, great dude.
Put that in a song dude, you sound real, Tom Waits..ish Good Luck ... :-)
Yes I agree
I met LL after a show many years ago, right after this album came out. There were a number of us who waited outside the back door of the theater to meet him. As we crowded around him to get autographs and a minute or two of conversation, he took as much time with each person as he or she wanted. When it came my turn, I couldn't help but feel that he treated me like I was the only person there. He didn't just sign and nod. He didn't just give me a canned response. He listened to me and conversed with me. I also always cut musicians slack when meeting them. They just got off work. They are tired, and I never take offense to what they say or how they act. Most are very nice. Some aloof. I'm just glad to be there. But I have yet to meet anyone who could make every person in line feel as though he truly appreciated the fact that they were there, as though he wanted to talk to them, like Lyle did. The man exudes coolness and grace and I will always consider my two minutes with him as a very special moment in my life.
Wicked games
Stay true to your roots, son. Lyle is a perfect example.
Lyle Lovett has always been one of my favorite entertainers. I always felt he never got the credit he deserved. I would like to see him cut a new Cd soon.
When I stumbled upon the "Step Inside This House" album I didn't know about any of the TX writers and it completely changed everything I thought I knew about music. Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell and Steve Earle, they are all amazing! and there are many, many more of them out there!
Beautiful way of describing the small things in life, of which no one else can place a value, neither can they be bought or sold.
Nicely put J Oliver, wife just died and as I and son went through all her memories and stuff and my god you hit it right, it is the small things that are the most meaningful
As a museum curator, I have always loved this song as a touching testimony to the emotional importance of objects in our life. Guy Clark totally nailed this! I have no idea what he can possibly criticize about it.
One doesn’t need thousands of “things” to appreciate being alive. Life in itself is a wonderful thing. Sung beautifully by Lyle written by the great Guy Clark.
we're all broken in one way or another. . .when those breaks have the right light they produce a rainbow. Guy Clark was a poet as great as any of the romantic period.
If you listen to John Prine's Souvenirs it's similar to this but what it's like loosing the objects that have emotional importance
Really hard to say what irked Guy about this. There is one line that’s a little clumsy, doesn’t scan too well. Still, I’m stumped as to why he never recorded it and didn’t even want Lyle to keep performing it.
A hidden gem in the music world. Pure.
A beautiful moment captured. Thank you for letting me see it.
ich schäme mich, diesen Artisten nicht gekannt zu haben. Möge diese Stimme die Welt erreichen.
Lyle's a treasure, and this is one of my favorites he does. Seen him several times and never seen him do it live.
This song reaches out just like a real invitation: a sincere reaching out that clasps you in its hands and gives you an intimate tour. It has the soul of a seven year old finding a new friend.
That song is pure talent -- both the writing and the performing.
Lyle first class all the way, never passed a chance to see Him & his large band here in phoenix, was never disappointed !
As a fan of Guy, and Lyle... what is there to criticize? It's a great song. I love it.
Lovett did this song last night in Chapel Hill. I love Guy Clark, but had never heard this song. Wow, it was the highlight of the show for me.
One of my favorites, by one of my favorites, wrote by one of my favorites.
Had the honor of seeing Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, Joe Ely and John Hiatt together in '05 in East Lansing MI during their Songwriters tour. Lyle sang this song with Guy Clark by his side. It was a beautiful thing indeed.
Me as well Steve, in my case, in a tiny theater in Princeton. I'm sure they would have done it had there been no-one else there at all. They had each other, and because of that the night was perfect.
What a honor it was to see them here in Humboldt at HSU. One of my best live music memories of all time....RIP Guy Clark....
Same story, different venue. Shows the amazing power of these men and their absolute love of words and expressing what we all feel!
Saw the 4 of them around 2006-07. I was fully expecting Lyle to be the headliner but was pleasantly surprised as he humbly and graciously shared the time, each performer taking turns singing a song. No egos at all on that stage, just a ton of talent!
Steve Paradiso I saw that in Florida
Lovett could sing the phone book and make it sound good. Such a talent.
quin bagwell definitely, and Guy Clark could write the phone book and somehow make it beautiful and interesting
True spent millions of miles on the road in a truck listen to him
This isn't a phone book though, this is lyrical genius.
@@superman1148 And make you cry at the beauty of his art.
@@ChefDaveWQFS if you haven't already, have a listen

The emotions captured in just this one song everyone can relate to. You can't find two songs in your lifetime that can do that.
I can name a handful of Guy's songs that bring me to tears.
Knew Guy in Houston many years ago when he first started singing and writing. He was a very sweet man.
Yeah wow I’ve always admired Lyle Lovett and I got to see him once a few years ago here in Cleveland with his large band is simply one of the best shows I ever saw.
I’ve only had those kind of feelings in this song a few times in my life and by damn I wish I hadn’t lost them. I don’t believe we are meant to be alone on this planet and no matter how hard we try we screw it up we can screw it up huge For whatever reason we end up alone. I’d like to have these feelings again to ask some some girl to step inside again and share my life as hard as that may be thank you I love it for this moment. 💔💕
For many of us love is all we need damn it’s hard to get
he does small venue shows here in the Bay Area too, at a winery in the hills from here, I have seen him twice, no matter how many times he is a breath of good air.
Never tire of Lyle's interpretation of this wonderful song.❤❤❤❤
This song hit my core!!!! Still feeling the goosebumps. Thank you 🙏
Remember, this was Guy's first song. First. Song. He just got better from there on. And BTW this says everything you need to know about the protagonist's life. I love this song and pretty much anything that Guy wrote. A classic storyteller.
two brilliant musicians....Lyle and Guy. WOW
Damn it !! This fricking song made me cry. Perhaps is due to the Covid 19 times we're all living in, but this song, and Lyle's voice, broke me to tears. And, of corse, some memories of my own life. Thank you, and have a beautiful life everybody. Peace.
What a wonderful version of a FANTASTIC song. I bought the Old Number One record , Guy's first recording the day it came out. I remember like it was yesterday growing up in Houston and riding my Norton to Evolution Tapes and Records in Pasadena. I sure love these songwriters like Lyle and Guy. And God Bless Townes.
Norton, eh? I had a stable of Trump 650s. All kickstart, all magneto.
***** Hey Greasegun! How are you. I had several BSA and Triumphs also. I have been riding for 44 years now. The Norton was an 850 Commando. I have two Hrleys presently but I am not riding much anymore. I need to sell mine and get a trike…lol.
Pipe Papi
Yeah...shame. My back is too busted to ride anymore. Just the same, any of them Trumps still around? I had my one 650 worked over with pop up pistons and dual carbs and it ran like a banshee, except...at 140 Lbs. the kick starter kicked me back; launched me once. I used to get curious bystander to push start it. I only last week parted with my last...a Honda Shadow. Heavy bike! I'm done with it now. Besides, my car is faster. (Yes, it is!) Peace...
I had 3 Honda 900 Customs all 1981. You guys have way too much money! ;-) . Lyle is so amazingly powerful. I love that guy.
guy clark!!! you picked the RIGHT person to sing this song!! he will kick it out of the house!! great job, LYLE! my hero!
RIP Guy Clark
One of those seemingly simple songs that contain so much, and Lyle packs his version with such emotion. Love it.
One of the great songwriters, by one of our best musicians. Thanks, Lyle.
Lyle Lovett singing Guy Clark.....what better is there?

None and nothing. So righteous fellow babies, so cool, so groovy, so nice.
Guy singing it lol 😂
Lyle Lovett is truly a master, and the world is so much better for having his art in it. I wish he was more celebrated as an artist. He deserves it. I'm not a country fan, but he transcends a genre. If you ever see this, Mr. Lovett, Thank you for blessing this world with your talent.
I love Guy Clark, and I've somehow never listened to Lyle before. This is beautiful
Lyle Lovett is one of best preforming artists and song writers of any generation. If you have the opportunity go and see this man preform, he is well worth the price of admission.
I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Lyle, after seeing him multiple times, a real genuine gentleman, and a musical legend!
... broken prism, well the light's bright now ~~ no down writing that lyric. can't get past it.
"can i see you again next fall?" there's no need to ask.
+Dana Cunningham This guys lyrics will never fail to make you reflect and bring you joy or maybe some shade of emotion......
I have never heard this song before, found myself listening for each word, when the clapping started I wanted to join in, wish I was there
An old man's song maybe you have to lived a bit of life to understand these words.
I'm young and I think it's brilliant haha
Yes definitely have to live it first.
Lowell Calavera fear of attachment? No, fear of rejection.
Robert Belair Guy Clark was a young man when he wrote that. It takes the audacity of youth to write a song as true as that.
This was such a special moment at a really wonderful CT Forum. Hearing Lyle sing live and up close is powerful and touching.
Fantastic interpretation Lyle Lovett!
This is REAL country music.
Sadly, when I was in Nashville at the Country Music Hall of Fame, there was nary a reference to Lyle. Sad. Even Bob Dylan had a huge spread with Nashville Cats. But Lyle - nada. Disgrace.
Love this guys music!! 😍🎶❤️
Such am amazing, wonderful, beautiful talent. Thanks, Lyle!! God Bless You!!
This man's music and voice makes me happy. His stories are from the heart. Intimate.
A serious heartfelt song. Appreciate it done this way by Lyle Lovett
Even years later this is outstanding
Perfect does not exist. But good can be more than satisfying. Thank you, Lyle!
the currnet radio wouldnt dare play this good stuff, it would scare most people.....the emotional depth is striking
ImNotMad ButUR
It’s actually really scary because the ability to think and the ability to feel sortof happen in parallel
Example: whether you love him or hate him: 50% in USA don’t understand why Donald Trump got elected. Which is also why he got elected.
Education has never improved on the ability to think - we have more educated people today yet far fewer who can think.
So we have vanilla same/same music on the radio because most people think of a certain sound as the defining standard of quality and there’s 145 “artists” all putting out the same sound with same-sound producers whose biggest crescendo is a millisecond cymbal crash- equalized down of course so as to not require any better audio equipment than a phone.
That picture hangin' on the wall
Was painted by a friend
He gave it to me all down and out
When he owed me ten
Now it doesn't look like much I guess
But it's all that's left of him
And it sure is nice from right over here
When the light's a little dim
Step inside my house Babe
I'll sing for you a song
I'll tell you 'bout where I've been
It shouldn't take too long
I'll show you all the things I own
My treasures you might say
Couldn't be more'n ten dollars worth
But they brighten up my day
Here's a book of poems I got
From a girl I used to know
I guess I read it front to back
Fifty times or so
It's all about the good life
And stayin' at ease with the world
It's funny how I love that book
And I never loved that girl
Hold this piece of glass
Up to the light comin' through the door
It's a prism glass I found on the road
Can you see that little rainbow
Well it's not really a prism I guess
It just broke in a funny way
I found it on my way from Texas
Headed for L.A.
This guitar was given me
By old man Thomas Gray
It's not too much to look at
But I pick it every day
It's been across the country
Four or five times I guess
Between me and old man Tom
It never got much rest
Well that's about all I own
And all I care to I guess
Except this pair of boots
And that funny yellow vest
And that leather jacket and leather bag
And hat hangin' on the wall
Just so it's not too much to carry
Could I see you again next Fall
Love it Lyle...
One of the best Double CD's in my collection...
Such a pure meaning to inviting people in your life.... but what is amazing is being thanked for it .,, love this song,,and even better with the story behind it.
The irony is that it might be the best song Guy ever wrote.
It's my favorite... from my favorite artist. Yeah. Sometimes, we're our own worst critic.
ok, first time I've ever heard this, song and Lyle just blew me away
A super talent
Gracious, humble, generous with credit, praise & admiration of others...smooth, accomplished artist...Wonderful job Mr. Lyle Lovett. I have to think Mr. Guy Clark would smile at this rendition. Thank you for sharing your talent & gifts with us.
May God bless you & yours. Be well.
Had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Lyle in Concert Hall, Glasgow, Scotland. for the first many many years ago, he appeared by himself and a celloist, he entertained the audience with great songs and musicianship and anecdotes.
Here is a beautiful song writer with a story to tell. And a real sincere voice to tell it.
no words for this, so nice!!
One of my favorite songs. It's funny that Guy Clark didn't like it. Just goes to show that sometimes a creator can be a bit too close to his work to recognize how good it is. Or maybe is just needs a different voice to make it great. Whatever.... Lyle doing Guy's song is a fantastic combination.
Lyle Lovett is proof that Texas should be preserved, in spite of it all, just in case he wants to come back. And sing another song.
Please keep singing it, Lyle...
0 dislikes... Lyle Lovett is the man
Love his Aggie ring in this. He sings my heart
I have this CD. He was in Pennsylvania and did a meet and greet sponsored by WXPN at a Borders bookstore..And afterwords we waited in line until 1 AM and he signed part of the insert for me. And he was so tired. And I told him 'you are so tired -- please get some sleep. You would really feel good with more sleep." And he smiled and said 'thank you ma'am. That's the best suggestion I've had all night.' Nice memories of Lyle,
I like so much to listen to his voice and this song and Church are my favorite. 🥰
True artist
Grande Lyle, canción intimista y sincera. Bravo. Un saludo a tod@s desde España.
Guy Clark is awesome and not well known..... Lyle is great to give credit where it is due.
IDEA: search Guy Clark on you tube and be amazed....try This old Guitar,
Dublin Blues among others..
enjoy!
Totally love this song! I listen to this while I'm out on the bike!!!!!!
Yo también escuchándola montado en bici, pero yo dentro en mi bici estática 😉
Heading out to see Mssrs. Lovett and Keen in an acoustic performance in Galveston tonight.
SHould be good!
All my treasures..ALL MY dREAMS.. WEED TO SMILE..
I just love his spirit and that voice.
Saw Lyle in concert.....one of the best I’ve had the pleasure to see/hear!
Lovett's style makes this a beautiful ballad.
YEAH YEAH GET IT UNCLE LYLE
Find some Mickey Newbury, some early Jerry Jeff Walker, Pat Green, Robert Earl Keene, maybe some Terry Allen. You'll probably like them all.
Beautiful song...I hope he's now proud of his creation!
Great song. Well sung Lyle.
Yeah, that’s right. Don’t turn down the guitar, turn up the vocal mike. Geez, sound guys are worthless.
I have to thank a dear friend of mine, for bring up Lyle Lovett's name..The time was very creative indeed and a mix of talent bloomed. Still does, but not the same. Nothing is the same, lyrically incredible. feeling memories a guitar ..And just peace. I applaud Lyle Lovett and his music and how he created a passion in me of the gifted artist and musicians that I enjoy all these years later.
Just bad ass.....
I sure these engineers learned how to put a limiter in front of the converters so the audio doesn't crackle when the artist gets louder? This would be great if it wasn't for that.
This song reminds me of a man named Otis. He was an old man when I was just a boy. He lived in a two room shack next to the Discovery Bay Tavern. There were six or eight of them. This was the early 1980’s. I’m still here but those cabins have been long swallowed up by blackberry bushes.
Lyle is a great friend. I cherish his talent & friendship.
Saw him some years back at the Fox theater in Detroit, Awesome show! Love to go to see some music again!
He seems to be a nice guy...a gentle spirit ...I just found out of him watching a documentary about John Denver where he is a witness of John 's life. God bless
Todd, what a revelation that must have been. They hung out in Houston long before there was a major Austin music scene. They tried Nashville which was not ready for them, and then it was back to Austin. And don't forget the queen, Lucinda Williams.
beautiful
Lyle paints such a wonderful picture when he sings. Like Dan Fogelberg among others that sing a short story for us.
🔵 excellent performance but the guitar sounds over-modulated and distorts annoyingly, I don't know if reprocessing the audio at a lower volume would help as I think the problem is on the original recording.
Yep, I was thinking the same. Pity, cos Collings are great guitars.
There are only three artists who Guy would have trusted to perform this song with the feeling it deserves - Lyle Lovett, Verlon Thompson and Shawn Camp.
