Amazing how Johnny could be in such a state, fiddling with his guitar strap, and still perform and play like he does here...legendary.

Yes, it's true that Thunders is really high during this performance, (and despite a few missed cues) still delivers a truely mesmorizing performance and the crowd at the end shows their appreciation by cheering, clapping and stomping on the floorboards. I haven't seen that kind of response by a New York crowd in years. Unfortunately, times have changed and everyone now seems to be disconnected from this kind experience.
It was common knowledge that Thunders life was completely steeped in junky culture as described in his highly regarded and most enduring junky anthems, "Born To Lose" and "Chinese Rocks". And to whatever degree he was trapped by a culture that he helped to create can be debated, but I bristle at those comments that seemingly discount his effort as "sad" or a "waste". What was sad and a waste was the way that he died (out of town and alone) and one can't help but feeling like there should have been someone there, (anyone) to look out for him. But Thunders was a grown man and made his choices and he knew that being a heroin addict was fraught with danger and peril. He sang about this life, wrote songs about the life, and lived it-on and off the stage. Rather than viewing this performance as too sad to watch, I think it's a Goddamned triumph, as did his audience-give it a chance.
