One of the great things about this film is that all of the imagery in the work feels like a painting Turner would have actually created.

I was looking for a comment along these lines. There's fun to be had estimating the moment where the composition is just right, for example; at 0.37, 0.43, 0.54, 0.58 - these moments are all masterpieces! I haven't actually seen the movie yet, it must take hours to get through!

Another brilliant film from Mike Leigh. A beautiful exploration of the contradiction of the external presentation and inner subtleties of Turner the man, and his work. Timothy Spall gives a splendid moving performance as per usual

I do not know what it is about JMW Turner and his art that speaks to me. I am no aficionado when it comes to art but somehow his art provokes an emotional response. This film gives an insight into what the world was like and how Turner viewed it. I found it completely mesmerising. Needless to say Timothy Spall is excellent in his portrayal of Turner.

My fav. English artist ever, namely, Joseph Mallord William Turner; a painter of GENIUS if ever there was one; world re-known as being called, 'the painter of light'...whose every single brush stroke was to behold sheer 'poetry' itself.
I've been such a huge fan of his truly magnificent artworks right throughout all of my entire life; even today: 07/11/14, I was at London's Clore Gallery carefully observing and admiring his GREAT paintings/and, absolutely huge output(I forget how many tens of 1000's of works he donated to the Nation; was it 30,000/40,000+).
I didn't actually plan on watching this movie, specifically; but, when I turned up one late night to go and visit London's Haymarket, Cineworld; there was a choice of 3 movies to watch; and, quite blindly, I chose this one...wondering to myself what the hell does the title: Mr Turner, mean...? Anyway, I decided to go find out...
Much to my total disgust, Turner himself, was played by actor, Timothy Spall; whom I regard as being, by far and away, the 'ugliest' actor of them ALL(this guy truly deserves to go play Quasimodo, instead). My charming utterly mesmerizing 'super-hero' genius painter(I've already seen his 'handsome' self-portrait)...being played by a grossly over-weight fat ugly plain extremely dull exceedingly boring utter 'weakling'.
And, frankly, my really 'bad' first impression remained exactly the same right throughout the entire film; going all the way from start to finish; quite honestly, an absolutely terrible portrayal of a total 'genius'.
The women in the film were equally a wholly disgusting 'turn off'. To think, they actually showed them having sex together, as well. YEUK(I swear, NOT a pretty sight at all)!!!
I think, the film director must have decided they wanted to take 'realism' to the extreme; showing, namely, WARTS n ALL; including, farting/picking noses/burping/out of shape wrinkly people, basically, going to pot completely/-etc. I'm sure, you get my drift.
There were only just one or two places where the film did actually work for me...
a> it filled one in a little bit more about Turner's life and history(which I must confess that I still haven't yet read...; instead, I felt quite contented to just merely stand and 'stare' at his absolutely amazing masterpieces).
b> there was one scene which was beautifully drawn/lit...showing a famous ship that Turner had painted...'The Fighting Temararie'.
But, otherwise, I feel they did him something downright rotten. A Romantic painter(shipwrecks/storms/wide vista countryside scenes/Palatial scenes/crowd scenes/-etc.)...who's life they decided to take all of the Romance right out...making him look like a right little SHI*!
I think, they should HANG the director together with ALL of his cast(yes, seriously; wot a bunch of ugly bastards & bitches)!
Please, PLEASE somebody go and make a NICE film about J. M. W. Turner's life, and, history; hopefully, I pray, this will NOT be both the first, and, last...?!
(I'm NOT a film director myself; but, as an 'amateur', I'm sure, I could have done a far better job of it myself. There is so much splendid material there paintings/scenes to do a GLORIOUS portrayal of the life of a MASTER artist. A man born with a WONDERFUL 'eye'...married to an equally WONDERFUL 'hand'.)

timothy spall is one of the greatest actors of his generation....much like Philip Seymour Hoffman...RIP...and has an amazing range....alas these thespians are so underrated and reduced to pointless supporting characters when they are perfectly capable of carrying a movie solely upon their able shoulders and render a masterpiece...

The British film director Derek Jarman, who died of AIDS, made a film about Carravagio in the 80s. Don't know if it's any good. The only part of this film that I enjoyed was the raw, animalistic sex scene featuring Mr.Turner and his maid. The grunting perfectly timed to match the thrusting made me so thankful that I watched this film with my 12 year old brother. It was truly magnificent.

Why can't I find the song in this trailer anywhere? I know it's "Help Us Grow", but only because I found it on one website. Why's it nowhere on TH-cam?

Mr. Turner was, of course, more famous than Van Gogh at the time. But when I saw Turner in this movie, I kept thinking about Boris Johnson. BoJo the painter.

They say in story writing to ask yourself a question
"In your story, is this the most interesting part of your character's life?
if not, why aren't you showing that instead?"
so why was this movie so completely mind numbingly dull in spite of obviously chronicling the best part of the man's life? He grunts for 2 and a half hours, paints for a bit and then dies. and its not like there was no room to do a good job. When his father died I didn't care, no-one had any character. and when he died I was relieved it was the end of the movie because no-one still had any character. Its a story about a person with no work going into allowing the audeicne to connect emotionally with the character. Do not bother to watch it.
