this scene is what made me break down. Watching a man who's been afraid for over 20 years, likely much much longer, finally let his friend know the truth about him. He isn't afraid anymore. It's so touching. I know that feeling all too well.

I cannot imagine how many people for most of time were gay but terrified about coming out due to family and local communities.

One of my favourite things about this scene is the way it recolours his argument with Maureen earlier over her homophobia, when he tells her "If you think this is what my brother would have wanted, you're wrong." Just subtly raising the possibility that maybe before he died Cliff told his brother he was gay, that Cliff knows his brother accepted him.

When she says "I could say the same about you Cliff", I took that as a hint that she suspects that he's gay.

It’s such a simple scene but carries a great emotional weight. Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton buttering bread somehow makes me cry every time. Fantastic!

    "I know . . ."
Clint went through the whole range of emotions with that one phrase.

Cliff was such a wonderful character, and in this scene you can see the beginning of being his true self. Up until then he was fairly softly spoken, shy, and often struggles to say what he wants to. After this scene, he is a lot more confident, even speaking on national television at Gay Pride to talk about how brave and charitable LGSM were.

    This was a lovely scene,
It reminded me of when my bestfriend told me he was gay,
We were 13 at the time,
We were watching a film and he just randomly said “I’m gay”
I smiled and said that I knew then we carried on watching our film🥰😂.

The only movie my (Welsh!) dad has ever cried at as far as I know.
He's straight and all his friends are, hell as far as I know he's not in frequent contact with anybody who's gay or bi but this film always gets to him and his tory despising emotions, this scene in particular always makes him cry.

I know hearing people say 'I know' is supposed to make you feel good when you come out but when they've known for a long time I can't help feeling a bit angry about it. Why let someone spend years feeling alone? Don't wait twenty years to say something. At least give a hint to let them know they don't have to feel so lonely!
