I spent my first five years in Hvac doing change outs in central Florida. Folks that design units to be in attics like that instead of taking a closet need to spend a little time in a cell.
Such a nice guy. "It was kinda tight" that was crazy tight. Insulation choking you off. I dislike when the system is so far in no air flow. Good job thanks for the content

I used to install and work on Motorola two-way radios and repeaters. Had to go out and replace a repeater that had taken a lightening strike. There was no fixing that repeater. LOL
i love how they put the units in the attic an never make away for you to get easy accses to them having to crawl an do stuff like this there should be a building code to make it easy for hvac to be able to get to theses units i think hvac need to have a talk to state gov about this an have new built homes have a better way to get to these
In that attic, I could not help but think that would be a REALLY inconvenient time for your flashlight battery to die. Coil damage due to no filter? Something let the magic smoke out rather fast on that last one. What did your estimate end up covering, new condenser or complete changeout?

The new air handlers & outdoor units are bigger & more efficient these days. We need space to put them in closets with a bigger area to access the unit & put them in that closet.
It's a common type of install across the US. The only place i haven't seen it done, is in Canada. Due to the fact that attic installs are probably illegal there.
@@jthonn There a demand these days for more living and storage space in the house. So builders are installing them more in the attic, so they are out of the way. This is one of the arguments for package units, which are common here in the southeast.
@@KenKen-ui4ny Thanks Ken, I guess they never look down the road anymore. I was raised in a small home (no A/C) many moons ago, 1000 sq ft tops. We had a central unit installed and the only space lost was a closet at the end of the hall. Vertical AH and plenum in the attic, easy peasy.
I hate attics, almost as much as I hate crawlspaces. Fortunately, I'm too fat for attics. Unfortunately, I'm not too fat for crawlspaces. In a very brief trial as an apprentice electrician, the very first job we came across that day was a window AC that caught fire, which caught the drapes on fire, which caught the bed on fire, which was occupied by the apartment's only resident, who was passed out drunk at the time. I'm told she lived. We were there to repair the smoke alarm system, which the resident handyman had bypassed so the rest of the tennants could return home. I decided not to become an electrician.
First visit disgusting (get someone else), second visit, they covered the real access with siding, to me should be made back into the access, third, replace only, the unit was to old for a whole new rewire even if the compressor checks out. Thanks for sharing.

It takes longer and more work to get to the unit. Attic jobs I’m starting to get tired of. Refrigeration calls are making me happier each day. But the things we gotta do is part of the game
I like those cathedral ceilings & you need a ten foot ladder to get to air handler in attic but the access is unacceptable because of the turns of the stairs to the top floor of a home.
usually a loose wire nut at air handler , or wire nut in the wall behind the thermostat from some one joining wires in the wall , batteries junk inthe thermostat , loose connection at thermostat real common or just junk thermostat.
Installers arent always to blame. Maybe there was supposed to be an access hatch nearer to the unit but the original owners decided it wouldnt look good
@@JesseDoesHVAC: Of course there was access through the wall. That’s how the equipment got there. Even so, that is not a good enough design. There should be headroom and working clearance.
70 amp breaker on that condenser was likely too large as it should have tripped off long before all of that wiring got cooked and caught fire. I'm guessing on that. Looked like it was a long overheated power draw vs. a quick short. That attic install was amazingly stupid...why the air handler was put way over there must have had some reasons at the time.
